In the olden days, after a wild animal was slaughtered, the tribe's shaman would wear the skin and re-enact the hunt. As he became one with the beast, the people slowly understood the ways of nature.
Cats is a similarly spiritual experience wherein we watch androgynous sylphs gyrate across the stage and believe (if only for a moment) that the human has become feline, all in service of better understanding the mysteries of our moggies.
Does there need to be so many sequins? So much dry ice? Such a quantity of pyrotechnics?
No, probably not. But it all adds up to a spectacular which will keep you grinning.
The deficiencies in Cats are somewhat inherent. The scrapbook story doesn't make a lick of sense. It is more like a variety show than musical theatre. The lyrics are, at times, utterly asinine. The music soars, until someone starts playing what sounds like a genuine 1980s Casio keyboard - and all you can hear is squelch.
But then Gary Wilmot (!!!) comes on as Gus and all is forgiven on a haze of metatextual glory.
The choreography and dancing are exemplary. The singing occasionally gets muddled but is mostly delightful. The stage is perfect - the wind blowing through the trees and the moon gently rising only helps to accentuate the atmosphere.
The pre-show is good. As well as a variety of food stalls, patrons are encouraged to bring their own food and drink for a picnic. There are plenty of tables and a couple of selfie points.
The programme isn’t horrendous at £6 but still feels like it contains more advertising than content. The queues for the loos were outrageously long and the stalls weren't particularly clean.
There's nothing to do post-show except trudge back through the park. The selfie point is still illuminated if you want to queue for that. Even the t-shirt sales stopped after the interval.
I first saw Cats in the West End some time in the 1980s as a child and loved it. Afterwards my parents asked if I wanted to see a ballet or an opera next. "Eurgh! No! Boring!" I said. They politely informed me that I'd just seen both in one show and my juvenile mind was blown.
A few decades later I saw Cats on Broadway - shortly before it closed, I think. The C90 cassette they used to play the music was warbling like a demented bird and the sets looked equally tired. Despite the half empty auditorium, the cast attacked the songs with vigour. I still loved it.
And, today, I still had goosebumps. Maybe it was the unseasonable chill in the air, maybe it was the moonlight, or maybe it was the magic of Cats!

Ayer tuve la oportunidad de asistir a la función del musical Brooklyn Bridge, a new musical.
Brooklyn Bridge, a new musical es un musical original con dramaturgia y libreto de Ray Roderick, música de Jason Howland y letras de Ray Roderick y Joseph Baker. La producción cuenta con la dirección escénica de Ray Roderick, dirección musical de Jason Howland y diseño de escenografía e iluminación a cargo de Neil Patel y Kenneth Posner, con una duración aproximada de 120 minutos (con un intermedio de 15 minutos).
El musical narra la aventura de la construcción del puente de Brooklyn a finales del siglo XIX, centrándose en la visión visionaria del ingeniero John A. Roebling y la dramática sucesión de contratiempos que amenazan el proyecto.
Tras la trágica muerte de John y la grave enfermedad de su hijo Washington —afectado por el mal de descompresión al supervisar los caissons sumergidos bajo el East River para construir sus cimentaciones—, la historia da un giro decisivo hacia la figura de Emily Warren Roebling.
Es ella quien asume secretamente la gestión de las obras, superando las presiones políticas, las huelgas de los trabajadores y los prejuicios de género de la época para liderar la culminación de una de las mayores hazañas de la ingeniería de su tiempo.
Las 21 canciones del espectáculo son bastante eclécticas y por momentos, suena un poco a Ragtime. Hay varias melodías pegadizas y un par de números musicales ingeniosamente puestos en escena, pero también destacan algunas arias e himnos grandiosos.
El musical fue gestado y desarrollado a lo largo de la década de 2010 por Ray Roderick y Joseph Baker, teniendo su primera presentación pública en formato de lectura dramatizada en el York Theatre Company en 2018, para finalmente estrenar su producción completa con la música final de Jason Howland en este agosto de 2026.
En cuanto al lugar donde acudía a la representación, ubicado en el histórico Space at Irondale (dentro del centro comunitario de la Iglesia Presbiteriana de Lafayette, en Fort Greene, Brooklyn), es un espacio escénico de arquitectura singular.
Al tratarse de un santuario del siglo XIX reconvertido, conserva techos altísimos, arcos majestuosos y un gran espacio diáfano sin proscenio fijo.
Esta configuración flexible rompe la barrera entre el escenario y la platea, logrando una atmósfera inmersiva.
Espero que este musical siga ganando tracción en la escena del teatro de Nueva York y algún día la podamos ver en los escenarios de Broadway dentro de una producción con medios técnicos y escénicos más ambiciosos. Estoy seguro de que sería un éxito al contar una de las más épicas historias de esta ciudad; el como una saga familiar consigui que dos ciudades separadas por aquel entonces Nueva York y Brooklyn, tuvieran la motivación para convertirse en una sola tras la consolidación de 1898.

I went to see Heathers - The Musical last night at #CanberraTheatre with wife, daughter and daughter's friend.
Heathers (1989) is one of my favourite movies and I was wondering how a modern, musical interpretation would work. And the answer is... Brilliantly!
They retained all the great the one liners: "Dear Diary, my teen-angst bullshit now has a body count.", "I don't patronize bunny rabbits.", "I got paid in puke." and many more but they also expanded some lines and concepts through song - particularly "I love my dead, gay son".
The saccharine sweetness that usually goes with musicals was pleasantly absent. If anything, they doubled down on the cynicism and darkness of the original movie.
I loved it - big fun. 9/10 slushies.

Carlo Boszhard (57) en zijn partner Herald Adolfs (49) stort hij zich op '& Juliet', waarvoor zij samen de Nederlandse vertaling maakten. De repetities zijn inmiddels gestart, maar het verlies van zijn droomrol blijft voor Carlo natuurlijk nog even slikken.
