  2. @Npars01
Resonates & has a lot of explanatory power: “ The fetishization of "heroes" in American culture has always been cognitively dissonant.” ☹️
A striking but dissonant feature of US culture, as you say. 🤔
Makes what Paul writes all the more important.

  3. PsyPost: Narcissistic traits and celebrity worship are linked to excessive Instagram scrolling via emotional struggles and fear of missing out. “The researchers found a positive link between narcissistic traits, celebrity worship, and problematic Instagram use. In other words, individuals who scored higher in narcissism or celebrity obsession also reported unhealthier relationships with the […]

  4. My heart breaks for little Timothy. 💔 Trying to become an android to hide from his grief? It's a tragedy! But Data was right: even the sorrow is part of the privilege of being alive. And didn't Little One do a marvelous job guiding them? She gets her empathy from me, naturally. Now, someone had me a tissue. And, who wants to explain to me why the ship finally stopped shaking? #LwaxanaTroi #HeroWorship #AllStarTrek #StarTrek #StarTrekTNG #TNG #StarTrekDS9 #DS9 #Mastodon

  5. A quotation from Thomas Carlyle

Hero-worship exists, has existed, and will forever exist, universally among mankind.

Thomas Carlyle (1795-1881) Scottish essayist and historian
    Sartor Resartus, Book 3, ch. 7 (1834)

  6. CW: Rape mention (Neil Gaiman allegations)

    The Neil Gaiman thing.

    A. Principles and values and morality
    or
    B. tribalism and identity threat and hero worship

    Sometimes you have to choose.

There are some comments on the fediverse (and much worse on bsky etc.) that are just... ::yeeeesh::. People seriously saying his work is so important that he should get a pass for rape. Others (wtf) saying or implying that if they had been raped or otherwise assaulted by Gaiman they would be fine with it.

There's actually some research on the latter question. As one reviewer put it, despite the popularity of rape fantasies, there are approximately zero people who report actually enjoying being raped, no matter who committed the crime. So no, you would not enjoy being raped by Neil Gaiman.

I've already seen one post criticizing these insane takes disappear within minutes. There might be positions from which to validly defend Gaiman as an artist, but there are not valid positions to defend rape/sexual assault. If your advocacy for your superfavoriteomg author leads you to blame victims, excuse/justify sexual assault, or criticize people who don't do those things, you are wrong. Just completely wrong.

BTW if you're able to separate the work from the person, great. I can sometimes do it (e.g. J.K. Rowling, Richard Feynman) and sometimes not (e.g. Louis C.K., Lizzo). This isn't about that. This is about what is behind your "support" for Gaiman: values and morality or something a lot less valid.

*EDIT*: a formatting or two, plus I accidentally a word and implied that nobody gets raped. This is very very not what I meant to write; it should say nobody *enjoys* being raped.

  7. That was good thriller right there. Wavefront coming closer...closer...closer. Data processing, LaForge transferring. Seconds left!

    I like it.

  8. Back in the 80s on a networked Star Trek forum, I used to imply that Data might have had a thing for kids. Think about it... all of the episodes where he relates to kids...

People used to get real pissed when I'd say it.

    IT'S A JOKE FFS!!!
