  2. #NoKings

As early as 2 years ago, many people in #Germany and #Europe felt that #BigTech ’s internet platforms did not live up to the claim of being #socialmedia. Many were appalled by the #hatespeech, #incitement, #cyberbullying, and #disinformation being spread there.
Our action alliance first reached out to #universities to propose withdrawing from #X and adopting #Mastodon. We believe the #Fediverse platforms are much better suited for #SciComm or, more broadly, for substantive discourse aimed at protecting and preserving our #democracy. Other initiatives have since emerged, such as #ByeByeElon, #HelloQuitX, #LeaveX, and #SaveSocial.

We’ve already seen some initial success: around 150 #academic institutions in Germany are active on Mastodon and have +157k followers there
    👉 mastodon-listen.playground.54g
We believe this is an approach we can also recommend to the #research and #academic communities in the #US to fend off attacks from #autocrats .

  3. A quotation from Cicero

There are greater forces and means for attacking than for defending the State. The reason is, that reckless and abandoned men need only a nod to set them moving, and their own natural disposition incites them against the State; while honest folk somehow or other show less activity, neglect the beginnings of movements, and are aroused to action at the last moment only by simple necessity; so that sometimes, owing to their hesitation and indolence, while they wish still to enjoy peace even with the loss of dignity, through their own fault they lose both.

Marcus Tullius Cicero (106-43 BC) Roman orator, statesman, philosopher
Pro Sestio [For Publius Sestius], ch. 47 / sec. 100 (56-02 BC) [tr. Gardner (Loeb) (1958)]

  6. It’s a style of #politics that has been honed by the party’s young, #extremist #fringes for years. With #Trump’s blessing [& participation]… this faction is emerging as one of the most #influential forces in the party. 7. It’s safe to say that #Trump & the #RepublicanParty are deploying a new form of political #propaganda, updating a dark art for the platform era. 10. A quotation from Alexander Hamilton

The truth unquestionably is, that the only path to a subversion of the republican system of the Country is, by flattering the prejudices of the people, and exciting their jealousies and apprehensions, to throw affairs into confusion, and bring on civil commotion. Tired at length of anarchy, or want of government, they may take shelter in the arms of monarchy for repose and security.

  12. From 2024: #HumanRightsWatch - #Venezuela: Brutal #Crackdown on #Protesters, Voters

    Killings, #MassArrests Following Elections

(Bogota) – "Venezuelan authorities are committing widespread #HumanRights violations against #protesters, #bystanders, #opposition leaders, and critics following the July 28, 2024, presidential election, Human Rights Watch said today. Concerned governments should push for independent verification of the electoral results and support international efforts to ensure accountability.

"International observers have raised serious concerns about the July 29 announcement by Venezuela’s National Electoral Council (CNE) that #NicolásMaduro had been re-elected president. Following the announcement, thousands of protesters have taken to the streets, in largely peaceful protests, to demand a fair counting of the votes. Human Rights Watch has documented that Venezuelan authorities and #ProGovernment armed groups known as '#colectivos' have committed widespread abuses, including killings, arbitrary detention and prosecution, and harassment of critics. On September 2, a judge issued an arrest warrant against opposition candidate #EdmundoGonzález for '#conspiracy,' 'incitement to #disobedience' and other crimes.

" 'The repression we are seeing in Venezuela is shockingly brutal,' said Juanita Goebertus, Americas director at Human Rights Watch. 'Concerned governments need to take urgent steps to ensure that people are able to peacefully protest and that their vote is respected.'

"Venezuelans voted in the presidential election in large numbers, despite irregular government actions and human rights violations in the lead-up to the election, including arrests of opposition members, arbitrary disqualifications of opposition candidates, and restrictions on Venezuelans #voting abroad. Several hours after polls closed, Venezuela’s electoral council declared that Maduro had won the election with over 51 percent of the vote. The Electoral Council has not released the tally sheets from the election, nor conducted the audits and citizen verification processes required by law.

"The United Nations Electoral Technical Team and the #CarterCenter, which observed the elections, said the process lacked transparency and integrity, and questioned the declared result. They indicated that, instead, the precinct-level tally sheets that the opposition made public were reliable. The Carter Center noted that the tally sheets showed, with 81 percent of the votes counted, that #González had won the election by a significant margin.

"Venezuelans have taken to the streets across the country, particularly in low-income areas traditionally supportive of the Chavismo movement, where many incidents of #repression have taken place.

"Human Rights Watch received credible reports of 24 killings in the context of #protests from independent local groups, including Foro Penal, Justicia Encuentro y Perdón, Monitor de Víctimas, and Provea, or discovered them on social media. Human Rights Watch independently documented 11 of these cases, including by reviewing death certificates, verifying videos and photographs, and interviewing 20 people, including witnesses and other local sources. Many relatives, witnesses, and others were not willing to be interviewed because they feared #GovernmentRetaliation.

"Human Rights Watch analyzed and verified 39 videos and 2 photographs of protests found on social media platforms or sent directly to researchers by people close to the victims, and by local organizations and journalists.

"Researchers confirmed the exact locations where these videos were filmed; used information such as shadows, weather patterns, and upload dates to determine the time of day; and consulted with forensic pathologists and arms experts, who analyzed the injuries and weapons that were seen and heard.

"According to Venezuelan authorities, they arrested over 2,400 people in connection with protests. The local pro bono group #ForoPenal recorded over 1,580 '#PoliticalPrisoners' who have been arrested since July 29, including 114 children. Prosecutors have charged hundreds with sometimes broadly defined crimes carrying harsh sentences, such as '#incitement to hatred,' '#resistance to #authority,' and 'terrorism.'

"The government has also intensified its broader repressive tactics, cancelling passports of critics to prevent them from leaving the country, encouraging citizens to report on #demonstrators, and conducting abusive #raids, especially in low-income communities. On August 15, Maduro’s supporters in the National Assembly passed a law that grants the government #BroadPowers to control and shut down nongovernmental organizations [#NGOs]."

  19. @GottaLaff

I'm glad he did this. I was thinking this very same thing as the press conference went on. On the ex-bird site I remarked in real time to MSNBC, as the event droned on, «Why give free air to Trump spewing a nonstop series of unchecked lies? STOP. There's no "news" here. No policy. No action. He offers incitement, you offer credibility. If you looked back to media doing such for Hitler, how would you describe their role? Neutral? Proper?»

I had meant to go on longer in that thread, but I just couldn't bear it. I was thinking back to how many times in the 2016 campaign MSNBC had a chyron saying "Breaking news: Trump about to speak". It seemed almost daily and was infuriating. No other candidate got that daily bump. MSNBC should have credited itself later as one of his biggest soft donors. If democracy falls this time, they will be due part credit. But it won't save them from being thrown in jail by Emperor Trump I.

Sadly, the best description I've come up with to describe the relationship of MSNBC and Trump is the old joke, here told by Woody Allen in Annie Hall, that ends with "we need the eggs" ... except this is only a metaphor, and the real sutuation is no joke.

  23. The wife said #Czuba wanted #HanaanShahin & her son to move out of the residence, Fitzgerald said. Czuba believed he & his wife were in danger & believed #Shahin was going to call her #Palestinian friends & family to harm them, he said.

Czuba apparently made a $1k cash withdrawal “in case the US grid went down,” Fitzgerald said.

  24. #Trump had posted on his social media platform a different user's IG post showing #Engoron's #LawClerk at an event where she posed w/Sen Maj Ldr Chuck Schumer. The IG post questioned why she was "palling around" w/Schumer.

Trump's post went farther, referring to the #clerk as "Schumer’s girlfriend" & said she "is running this case against me. How disgraceful! This case should be dismissed immediately."

  25. Already, one of #Trump’s minions in #Congress has echoed the #incitement to #violence. The #Republican #PaulGosar of #Arizona wrote—in his #taxpayer-funded newsletter, no less—that “in a better society, quislings like the strange sodomy-promoting General Milley would be hung.” The meaning is not ambiguous: #Gosar is explicitly saying that killing #Milley would be desirable.

  26. Hours before President #Biden was scheduled to speak in #SaltLakeCity on Wednesday, a man was killed in a shooting involving #FBI agents in #Provo, #Utah.

  27. #JesseWatters then predicted that a newly reelected #Trump would "have to" quickly #imprison politicians who stand against him "& their families."

"This is only the beginning of politicians putting other #politicians & their #families in #prison. Sad that we had to go down this road. But this is where we are, & we have to finish it."

  28. Sick (rhymes w/duck) #JesseWatters of disgraced #FauxNews said last night,

“After these political war #crimes have been perpetrated on him, Donald #Trump is in the best position he's been so far to win reelection…. At which point, he'll have to #pardon himself immediately. And don't you think for a second he's not going to #UnleashHell on all of his #PoliticalEnemies."
