"The #Detroit #RidefortheLiving is one of many around the globe that are adjuncts to the original Ride for the Living, held every year in #Poland. The original Ride begins at the nefarious #Nazi #concentrationcamp at #Auschwitz- #Birkenau, Poland, and ends at the #Jewish Community Center in #Kraków, Poland.
This international Ride for the Living takes place over four days in Poland in June. It features a 60-mile #bike ride as well as other activities related to the #Holocaust and Jewish community #history. It ends with a #Shabbat dinner. Most important, the Ride commemorates those who were lost in the Holocaust and the resilience of the Jewish people. It’s an impressive event. Just ask Cheryl and Arnie Berlin who took the Ride in Poland (June 7, 2018).
The JCC in Kraków is a prime exemplar for survival and resilience. Before World War II, Poland had the largest Jewish population in #Europe at 3 million."

Diese leisteten verzweifelten Widerstand, worauf die SS vom ersten Räumungsversuch Abstand nahm. Erst in der Nacht vom 2. zum 3. August 1944 überfiel und ermordete sie die restlichen Häftlinge.

Remnants of Dehumanization at Auschwitz II-Birkenau
Walking through the preserved barracks at Auschwitz II-Birkenau confronts visitors with the stark reality of life and death in Nazi concentration camps. This photograph captures one of the sanitation sheds, where rows of crude concrete benches with circular openings served as communal toilets for thousands of prisoners.
Under the holes ran open cesspits or channels, not plumbing. Prisoners had to sit shoulder-to-shoulder, with no privacy at all. There was no running water, toilet paper, or sanitation as we’d understand it.
Prisoners were allowed to use the latrines only at fixed times, usually twice a day. Each use was limited to a few minutes for hundreds of people. Missing roll call because of illness or diarrhea could lead to severe punishment or death.
It was part of the systematic dehumanization of prisoners.
Visiting sites like Auschwitz-Birkenau or viewing documentary photographs serves multiple purposes: honoring the memory of victims, educating future generations, and reinforcing our collective responsibility to recognize and resist hatred, discrimination, and dehumanization in all its forms.
I suspect this is a lesson being forgotten or denied by many today.
27 January 1945 | On Saturday, at around 9 a.m., the first Soviet soldier from a reconnaissance unit of the 100th Infantry Division appeared on the grounds of the prisoners’ infirmary in Monowitz. The entire division arrived half an hour later. The same day a military doctor arrived and began to organize assistance.
In the afternoon soldiers of the Red Army entered the vicinity of the Auschwitz main camp and Birkenau. Near the main camp, they met resistance from retreating German units. 231 Red Army soldiers died in close combat for the liberation of Auschwitz, Birkenau and Monowitz. Two of them died in front of the gates of Auschwitz main camp. One of them was Lieutenant Gilmudin Badryjewicz Baszirow.
The first Red Army troops arrived in Birkenau and Auschwitz at around 3 p.m. and were joyfully greeted by the liberated prisoners. After the removal of mines from the surrounding area, soldiers of the 60th Army of the 1st Ukrainian Front marched into the camp and brought freedom to the prisoners who were still alive. On the grounds of the main camp were 48 corpses and in Birkenau were over 600 corpses of male and female prisoners who were shot or died in the last few days.
At the time of the Red Army’s arrival, there were 7,000 sick and exhausted prisoners in the Auschwitz, Birkenau and Monowitz camps.

#GazaGenocide / That Herzog?
#Ynet is reporting that Israeli President Herzog’s and his wife will lead the 37th annual "March of the Living," which will take place between #Auschwitz and #Birkenau this Thursday.
Israel's Herzog participation in the Holocaust memorial is clearly deeply hypocritical given his actions and statements. His rhetoric attributing collective blame for #Hamas’s actions to all Palestinians—a statement cited by the International Court of Justice—stands in contrast to the solemnity of commemorating the systematic extermination of Jews during the #Holocaust.
[...] What statesmanship is there in the signing of a lethal munition which, in the eyes of the world, represents Israel’s greatest sin in this war – sowing devastation in Gaza and killing innocents. --- Netta Ahituv wrote Haaretz.
The widely publicized image of Herzog signing a bomb shell intended for use in Gaza, an act condemned as indicative of genocidal intent, underscores a disturbing disconnect between remembering past atrocities while contributing to the suffering of civilians in #Gaza, where over 50,000 people, predominantly women and children, have been murdered so far by the #IDF.

On this day in 1945,Soviet Union’s Red Army liberates the #Auschwitz and #Birkenau concentration camps in which millions of Jews were killed.
#Soviet troops found 370,000 men's suits, 837,000 articles of women's clothing, and 7 tonnes of human hair.
Soviet troops gave their lives to liberate the concentration camps that served as industrial-scale human slaughterhouses…and yet Russia has not been invited to the 80th Auschwitz liberation anniversary memorial event in #Poland, while the country that perpetrated the atrocities, #Germany, will be there.
No matter how much the #US, #UK, and #EU try to rewrite history, the statistics reveal the truth. 27 million Soviets died to defeat #fascism in World War 2, the greatest sacrifice of any country during the war.
Roughly 3 in 4 German soldiers killed in World War 2 died fighting the Red Army on the Eastern Front.
Without the Red Army, Auschwitz would not have been liberated, and #Europe would be under the fascist tyranny of Nazi Germany.
