Dreyfus innocent: le 120e anniversaire de la décision de la Cour de Cassation le 12 juillet 1906.

Il a subi de terribles persécutions antisémites organisées par l’extrême-droite d'alors et la hiérarchie militaire, notamment par son séjour dans le bagne de l'Ile du Diable.

Le 12 juillet 1906, la Cour de cassation proclame, de manière très puissante, l’innocence du capitaine Dreyfus, rappelant qu’aucune charge ne pèse sur lui, qu’il n’a cessé d’être innocent et qu’il a été condamné à tort. C’est un arrêt historique, qui repose sur un travail colossal des magistrats, avec plus de deux ans et demi d’instruction et de débats.

Malgré cela, la hiérarchie militaire actuelle continue de s'opposer à la présence de la statue de Dreyfus, oeuvre du sculpteur Tim (Louis Mitelberg , https://shs.cairn.info/revue-archives-juives-2018-1-page-132?lang=fr) , là où elle devrait se trouver, dans le lieu de sa dégradation au sein de l'Ecole militaire. Mitterrand et son ministre de la défense Charles Hernu ont validé et accompagné ce déni.

Hommage à sa mémoire et à son courage, ainsi qu’à celui de ses défenseurs (ci-dessous).

Histoire des militants de gauche qui se jetèrent très tôt dans la bataille pour la défense de Dreyfus, contre l'antisémitisme et le nationalisme.

Le 17 janvier 1898, quatre jours après la publication par Émile Zola de son J'accuse, protestant contre la condamnation de Dreyfus, au paroxysme de ce qu'il était alors convenu d'appeler l'Affaire, les antisémites ripostaient violemment.

Dans toute la France des cortèges pogromistes déferlaient sur les quartiers juifs aux cris de « Conspuez Zola! » et de « Mort aux juifs! ».

A Paris une réunion publique était programmée par l'aile la plus dure de l'antidreyfusisme, dans la salle dite du Tivoli‑Vauxhall à proximité immédiate de l'actuelle place de la République; plusieurs milliers de personnes s'y pressaient.

Une centaine de militants ouvriers parisiens, allemanistes (socialistes de gauche) et anarchistes principalement, vinrent apporter une contradiction musclée à ce meeting.

L'association MEMORIAL 98, qui combat contre le racisme, l'antisémitisme et le négationnisme a été créée en janvier 1998, lors du centenaire de l'affaire Dreyfus.

Son nom fait référence aux premières manifestations organisées en janvier 1898, pendant l'affaire Dreyfus, par des ouvriers socialistes et révolutionnaires parisiens s'opposant à la propagande nationaliste et antisémite.

Ce site en est l'expression dans le combat contre tous les négationnismes (Arménie, Rwanda, Shoah...)

Ce festival, organisé dans un haut lieu de mémoire tragique, entend mettre en lumière le travail d’auteurs et d’autrices engagés dans la transmission de l’histoire de la Seconde Guerre mondiale et de la Shoah, ainsi que des valeurs universalistes portées par Sabine Zlatin, directrice de la colonie d’Izieu.

Entre 1943 et 1944, 44 enfants juifs y furent recueillis à la Maison d’Izieu avant d’être arrêtés le 6 avril 1944 sur ordre de Klaus Barbie, puis déportés et assassinés à Auschwitz.

Outre de nombreuses activités, dont des rencontres avec des auteurs de bande dessinée contemporains travaillant sur la Seconde Guerre mondiale et la Shoah, cette première édition accueillera également une exposition de planches et dessins originaux, prêtés par les artistes invités et présentés spécialement pour l’événement.

And the preceding is not a joke.
Not *at all*:

First, some sort of democratic governance that is not just a rubberstamped name is clearly essential to minimize #oppression.

Second, the currently dominant form of democracy (bourgeois-liberal) has one of the WORST and probably THE worst benefits/risks ratios of ALL political systems EVER:
The guy who gave us the #Shoah was more democratically elected than the 2000 and 2016 PotUS; that is a fucken PLAIN UNDISPUTABLE FACT.

In a #democracy that actually deserves this name, such a thing should be as CATEGORICALLY IMPOSSIBLE as an Emperor ruling a Republic.
(most republics have some sort of clause that in case someone tries to set themselves up as Emperor, and all else fails, any citizen is permitted, even encouraged, to kill that "emperor" there and then with no remorse or regret or legal jeopardy.)

And even the most rank and abject utter tyrannies are incapable of achieving the amount of large-scale long-term coherence to effect this sort of singularly grotesque and world-shaking atrocity:
Stalin, possibly, and Mao, certainly, got more innocent people killed - but that was mostly due to their being genocidally callous and cold individuals. And they had decades. And while no communist system was particularly "good", things like the Holodomor were not constantly recurrent features of Communism, but extreme outliers.
Hitler was worse: he only had 12 years, and he turned THE ENTIRE STATE AND SOCIETY (and in fact most of an entire CONTINENT) into mere tools of industrialized obliteration of innocent human lives on a gargantuan scale, the likes of which were not seen before or since.
#Nazism is truly THE WORST because when anyone else just disregarded human life, the Nazi state was from top to bottom an instrument to produce death, war, oppression, and nothing else - a sociopolitical "temple" of the most horrid death cult humans have witnessed so far -; any other purpose the Nazi state had was subordinate to destruction, and that was a built-in "feature" of its very design.

Whereas the most basic and essential purpose - maybe the *only* legitimate purpose at all - a State can ever have, IMO, is the PRESERVATION of human lives and livelihood; first, of its Citizens, and then, all other members of our species, now and forever.

How can a system that freely yielded THE WORST transmutation of society and state that is theoretically and practically possible be considered "democratic"?
No matter how good it works "in the fat years": it is a FUCKING LIABILITY SECOND TO NONE.

Fredy (Alfred) Hirsch (1916 – 1944) was a German-Jewish sports teacher born in Aachen known for his openly homosexual lifestyle and his efforts to aid children during the holocaust.

After the passage of the Nuremberg Laws in 1935, + perhaps due to increasing persecution of homosexual men in Germany, Hirsch moved to Czechoslovakia where he met Jan Mautner, another athletics teacher. According to other survivors the 2 were a well known couple in the community.
In November 1941, Hirsch was deported to the Theresienstadt ghetto, a way station to the extermination camps known for its relatively rich cultural life. Fredy took a leadership role for the children. He was known to be an extremely strict instructor insisting on impeccable hygiene which helped to lower the death rate.

These efforts continued after Hirsch was deported to Auschwitz in September of 1943. The Jews from Theresienstadt received privileged treatment - they were established in a separate block known as the family camp where they were tattooed, but were not subject to selection, and were not forced to shave their heads. But it was all an illusion as the group was slated for extermination in 6 months time.

Because of the respect + admiration Hirsch received from his fellow inmates, the resistance movement of Auschwitz pinpointed Fredy as a key player in a planned revolt. After uncovering an execution date for the first transport to the family camp resistance leaders asked Hirsch to lead the Jewish sector in revolt. As usual Fredy's first concern was for the welfare of the children in his care. It was explained to him that the children would have to fend for themselves during such a revolt - and that they were slated for death regardless. According to testimony, Hirsch asked for time alone to consider his options. Unable to desert his children Hirsch committed suicide. Other theories say that camp doctors, who were not slated for execution, poisoned Hirsch to save their own lives.

By 1940 "July 9 parliament had voted 569 to 80 to abandon the previous government, the Third Republic. The parliament also voted to give Chief of State Marshal Philippe Pétain, a World War I hero, full and extraordinary powers."
