“Fascism is not a historical accident, but the logical continuation of liberal capitalism at the stage of monopoly.”
- Max HorkheimerThere is something almost offensively inconvenient about Horkheimer’s sentence.
It refuses the comforting story.
Fascism is not a monster that crawls out of the forest while respectable society watches helplessly from the window.
It does not require civilisation to suddenly disappear.
It can emerge from within existing institutions, existing hierarchies, existing economic relations.
That is the point.
When capital concentrates, inequality deepens and economic crises become structural rather than exceptional, the question becomes increasingly unpleasant: what happens when democracy starts getting in the way of concentrated power?
One possible answer is reform.
Another is repression.
And fascism is, among other things, a particularly vicious political answer to that contradiction.
It preserves hierarchy by redirecting popular anger away from the structures producing insecurity and towards convenient human targets.
The unemployed become lazy.
The migrant becomes dangerous.
The queer person becomes corrupting.
The dissident becomes subversive.The system remains innocent.
The victim becomes the problem.
And this is why I find the contemporary habit of treating fascism as something belonging exclusively to history so profoundly dangerous.
Fascism rarely introduces itself as:
Hello. I am fascism.
It tends to arrive as an administrative measure.

A security policy.
A campaign against “degeneracy.”
A little restriction here.
A little dehumanisation there.
A political movement discovers that cruelty polls well, and suddenly cruelty acquires a press office.

Just two examples of what I am dealing with on that other “social” network I sadly need to be a member of.
This is gay people trying to eradicate trans people from queer history — while apparently also appointing themselves the Supreme Court of what “normal-looking” gay men and lesbians are. 🙄
And yes, history has an ugly little lesson here. In the Weimar Republic, there were gay men who were deeply attracted to nationalist and later Nazi ideology, including people who were quite happy to distinguish themselves from the “wrong sort” of queer people. Respectability, conformity and throwing other queer people under the bus did not make them safe. It did not save them.
So when I see queer people trying to scrub trans people out of Stonewall, Pride and the history of our liberation, I pay attention.
Because this isn't merely about the past.
They want to erase us from history because they want to erase us from reality.
And finally, can we talk about the “kiddo”, “child”, “babe” routine?
A grown man disagreeing with a grown person and immediately reaching for infantilising language to establish dominance is not exactly a revolutionary new contribution to human civilisation.
Isn't that just typical fucking male behaviour? 🙃

The saddest thing isn't hearing fascists call trans people "degenerates," "groomers," or "a disease." It's hearing some white cis gay men recycle the very language once aimed at them. They know exactly where that rhetoric leads. History doesn't become less dangerous because you're holding the megaphone this time. If liberation means anything, it means refusing to become what once hunted you.

20 July always brings the annual canonisation of Stauffenberg. And every year, I quietly step aside.
I don't really do heroes wrapped in aristocracy, ideas of a military ductatorship, and a vision of Germany that had precious little room for democracy or human rights. Opposing Hitler, important as it was, does not automatically make someone the kind of person I want to celebrate.
If I am to remember German resistance, my thoughts turn first to Georg Elser. A working-class man who, long before the tide had turned, acted because he recognised where fascism was leading. No title. No uniform. No dream of restoring an old order. Just the courage to risk everything in the hope of stopping catastrophe.
History is full of resistance. I simply choose to honour the kind that also dreamed of a freer, more democratic future.

The Nazis did not seize power on their own. They were helped by conservative politicians who believed they could use Hitler for their own goals and keep him under control. That was a fatal mistake. Without that support, the Nazis would have had a much harder time taking power. History teaches us a clear lesson: anyone who empowers fascists strengthens them and puts democracy at risk.

The Nazis did not seize power on their own. They were helped by conservative politicians who believed they could use Hitler for their own goals and keep him under control. That was a fatal mistake. Without that support, the Nazis would have had a much harder time taking power. History teaches us a clear lesson: anyone who empowers fascists strengthens them and puts democracy at risk.
