"The #BritishMuseum has postponed a lecture for #Jewish culture month over concerns that the event would be disrupted by #protesters.
The #museum announced that the talk on ancient #Israel and #Judah, which was scheduled to take place on Thursday, would be held at a later date yet to be decided.
The talk[...] was expected to examine the #archaeology and #history of the ancient kingdoms of Israel and Judah through artefacts held by the museum.
It was also expected to touch on other #historical events such as the #Babylonian destruction of #Jerusalem and the #Maccabean revolt, and was organised as part of the first ever #Jewishculturemonth in the #UK, which runs until 16 June.
However, less than 24 hours before the event, the museum said it would be postponed. In a statement, the museum said it was informed that a “significant proportion” of the registered attendees were “individuals intending to deliberately disrupt the event[...]”

@nobody a friend of mine frequently refers to this weblog, and I really relate: https://borretti.me/article/youre-not-going-anywhere
To reiterate, the only reason I stopped opening the birdsite or trying to bridge, is that Elon-ma broke the fucking authentication form for me and I don't have the motivation to deal with more JavaScript

The Celebration (and Experimentation and Observation) of the #KrononautMoon invites #TimeTravelers to show up or send a #signal to #Earth on the #TotalLunarEclipse (#TLE). Ancient #Babylonian texts may be accurate in some deadly #omen cases, but it's important to differentiate that there are three major classes of #Lunar #Eclipses, of which "total" is only one — occuring on an apparently eccentric (to us) schedule of approx once per year, next up on 14 Mar 2025.

An Australian mathematician cracked the code of a famous 3,700 year old Babylonian clay tablet revealing that they were doing more accurate trigonometry nearly 1,500 years before the Greeks.
In 2017, Australian mathematician Dr. Daniel Mansfield from the University of New South Wales decoded a 3,700-year-old #Babylonian clay tablet known as Plimpton 322. The tablet contains a series of numbers arranged in four columns and 15 rows. For a long time, the purpose of these numbers remained a mystery. -

But before that, there was and is #Akitu, the #Assyrian and #Babylonian equinox celebration (which also seems to have a counterpart in #Sumer). Modern #Assyrians celebrate Akitu on 1 April to coïncide with the beginning of a Gregorian month, but in ancient times, it was on the day of the actual equinox. My understanding is that the civil year officially began on the day of the new moon close to the equinox, but I might be wrong about that.

The Babylonian (Mesopotamian) World Map (700-500 BC), a diagrammatic labeled depiction of the world, discovered in Sippar, southern Iraq. It was first published in 1899 AD. The map was written in cuneiform script on a clay tablet, of which only the major portions survive, measuring 12.2 x 8.2cm.
This tablet contains both a cuneiform inscription and a unique map of Mesopotamian world. Babylon is shown in the centre (rectangle in top of the circle)

Did you know that #teenagers could be annoying even 3800 yrs ago?
During the first #Babylonian #Empire, Iddin-Sin, a wealthy boy from south of Baghdad, was sent away to #study.
As today, he worried that his clothes were not as nice as those of his classmates, & so wrote a manipulative letter to his mum.
It would’ve taken her months to spin, weave, dye, & tailor new garments.
The letter ends with: “You, you do not really love me.”

Babylonian square root
Compute √a like a #Babylonian....1) Make a guess x₀ > 0 for √a2) The average x₁ = ½ (x₀ +a/x₀) is closer to √a than either x₀ or a/x₀3) Iterating step 2 gives you a sequence x₁, x₂, x₃, ... that converges to √a .

YES!!! This is what I needed because I’ve been obsessing over how on earth four cups can be drunk (remember I’ve been reading about #demons in the #Babylonian #Talmud).
Thankfully @MiriamAnzovin explains.
There are other workarounds for other contexts I think, but this is the #Pesach one.

"the first one started some 5,000 years ago when the unification of Upper and #LowerEgypt occurred and the Uruk Kingdom in modern Iraq collapsed. The second event, some 3,000 years ago, took place in the eastern Mediterranean and is associated with the fall of the #Ugarit Kingdom and famines in the #Babylonian and #Syrian Kingdoms."
Back then, there were not many people on the planet.
I think, green energy by itself will not solve our problems...

Gwen had died earlier that day.
Not spooky, but poignant.
Well, if you don’t know her work, check it out. (I’ve given ‘The Babylonians’ to so many people as a present that one will probably be working its way to you somehow.)
And if you never knew Gwen, but know someone else brilliant & sharp & warm?
Don’t forget to keep in touch.

My friend Gwendolyn Leick died yesterday. She wasn’t a close friend - we met at a party at the house of the surgeon who’d been operating on the cancer on her face, had lunch, kept in touch.
She was simply the sort of person you want keep in touch with. To keep in your life.
She was introduced to me as ‘Gwen, the mesopotamiologist.’ And I went, HELLO wait WHAT?
