Right above me the sky is spotless, but 100 miles to the east, near Tucson, there are huge thunderstorms. I can see the flashes clearly from here. So I've got two cameras set up shooting the sky for sprites. there are nice big silhouetted saguaro cactus in the foreground, so if I catch any it should be pretty cool.

If you're not sure what I'm talking about, do a search for "sprite lightning". These things are surreal and and it's hard to believe they actually exist until you see one.

I just realized I never shared pictures of the red sprites, that I caught last year on August 14th.

They occured over a large thunderstorm complex in the Franche-Comté region in France, about 400 km from my location.

On July 3rd, astronaut Nichole Ayers photographed a rare Gigantic jet from the ISS. These upward directed electrical discharges extend 90-100 km high into the atmosphere.

I processed this image from the RAW file, adjusting the white balance, contrast and noise reduction.

#Sprites above storms over the SE of England captured on our #RaspberyPi #GMN #MeteorCameras in #Oxfordshire 180km away from the storms. Sprites are a type of upper atmospheric #TransientLuminousEvent that occur very high above thunderstorms. We had some lucky cloud gaps giving us a clear sight of them! #TLE #Thunderstorm #UKStorm
