  1. @Layan2002 @BellaCaledonia

In truth I left the #SNP (which I had then been a member of for 30 years) in 2008, before it first became the Scottish Government, because I disagreed with the leadership about the Monarchy. But, although I now feel closer to the @ScottishGreens, I do still vote for the SNP. Because, although I think they're useless, #ScottishIndependence is still a very important issue.

  2. Because #UKLabour is a UK party, which believes it needs votes from Scotland to achieve a majority, it can't switch to supporting #ScotttishIndependence, so it cannot tack left and attract #LeftWing pro-independence voters (who are mostly pretty dissatisfied with the #SNP and would be easy to win).

Meanwhile, @ScottishGreens are not putting on a stellar performance either, and have sidelined their one real star, @lornaslater; so their progress will remain slow.

  3. Consequently, as we see from the candidates left in #UKLabour's #Scottish leadership election, Labour isn't trying to challenge either #SNP or @ScottishGreens for the #LeftWing vote -- because they know the left strongly favours #ScottishIndependence -- so instead they're moving yet further right to try to poach votes off the #Conservatives and #LibDems.

  4. The fact that the salient issue in #Scottish politics is #ScottishIndependence is what allows the #SNP to maintain a commanding lead in the polls despite no one at all believing either their that administration is particularly competent or that their policies are much good. Because they don't have to be any use in order to win means they are not very motivated to improve.

The @ScottishGreens may gradually win more votes off them, but that will take time, which we don't really have.

  5. I mean the fact that the #SNP is useless isn't illustrated by this graph. But the SNP's raison d'être is #ScottishIndependence, which it has absolutely no plan to achieve; and meanwhile it has too broad a coalition to have any clear policies on anything else, and has had, for the past decade, too controlling a leadership to have had any serious internal political debate, or allow younger talent to develop.

But this thread is not about the SNP's uselessness.

  6. I'm reading the Scottish Government's latest #Biodiversity Action Plan. A great deal of it is pure fantasy unless we also urgently tackle the #ClimateEmergency (which we are not doing) but the ambition is good.

#ScotGov should talk far more about things like this which are genuinely good and popular, and are at least seriously being attempted.

  7. @RaffKarva This won't happen, because the #SNP are useless and frit.

We need a pro independence party which actually believes in #ScottishIndependence .

  12. @LaNaehForaday Note that this is about opposition, not government.

  16. @RickiTarr and guess what? Our main parties here, #UKLabour and the #Tories, are funded by the exact same class and very often the exact same individuals. The only difference for Scotland is that our #SNP is not yet funded by the #Kleptocrat class — but is nevertheless sucking up to them in the hopes that it will soon be.

When the rich can buy politicians, #democracy is broken, and voting is more or less useless.

  17. So far, the #Burnham bounce is nowhere near big enough for the #LabourParty.

That predicted 27% voteshare is way ahead of #Starmer's low points. But the seat projections put Labour on only 224, and unable to formally majority even with #LibDem and Green support.

Burnham would also need #SNP support. It would be very hard to build a 4-way deal with both LibDems and SNP. Only some major constitutional change could swing it.
