As someone raised #Mormon #LDS #TCOJCOLDS, I agree. In #Utah, it's more than a church. It's a culture. It's even got a lot of power in our politics. Now, #ExMo #ExMormon, how can I self-identify if I can't name that cultural norm?
In Utah, when you say "the church", everyone knows which one you're talking about and it ain't Catholic. In fact, there were "I am a Mormon" ad campaigns around the time of the #2002Olympics. Then the last president of the church tried to take back the "Mormon" name and change our culture to say it was offensive and even a slur, but too little too late, my guy. Very few but him felt that way. Many tried to change their language to obey the religious leader, but "Mormon" is still in common use.

#Trans people are people. #Immigrants and refugees are people. All people have the same inalienable human rights. That doesn't change because you like them or not. That doesn't change because they are or are not citizens.
If you target other people to lose their rights, your own rights are then vulnerable. We are only free when all of us are free.

I failed the #LDS #mormon #Church. I ran away as a teenager because I was afraid of serving a #mission. I was told that if I didn't serve a mission I wouldn't be able to hold leadership positions and no woman would ever want me. It was too much pressure for #autistic me. Then I had my records removed because the #missionaries kept finding me everywhere I moved and I couldn't handle the shame. I wonder how my life would have been if I had been what #God expected me to be. #christ #christianity

It also just really chafes me when any entity tries to claim PUBLIC DOMAIN IP as their own. The Mormon church didn't make the Christus statue. It was made in 1833 by a Lutheran. Stealing or borrowing is one thing, but then claiming it's exclusively yours... that's just about the lowest thing.

One thing that a lot of deeply indoctrinated Mormons don't grasp is the use of conventions (like images and terminology) to continue a conversation outside its original authoritarian-defined bounds. It's not an attempt to deceive — it's a long-standing form of artistic expression meant to reference the thing being discussed that's used in just about everything: art, music, science, philosophy, and especially, religion. People outside these insulative communities understand this, because we're exposed to the larger world of thought and perspective.
I do believe LDS leadership genuinely believes Dehlin is trying to deceive his audience. But as the article points out, it isn't very effective as a deceitful device. Five seconds into a typical Mormon Stories episode (or just look at the thumbnail) will show you that it's critical of the church.
But members, and leadership especially, aren't used to a full ecosystem of healthy conversation from a wide array of diverse viewpoints, including constructive and well-reasoned criticism. So they take on this persecution complex where everyone is out to get them, and then they become aggressors in what they believe self-defense.
But they're the ones isolating themselves from the larger conversation because they've marginalized everyone outside their tiny, exclusive core.
They're welcome to *join* the conversation any time. But they don't get to dominate it.

I find the names interesting. They're way cooler than the names men gave to us when I was coming up.
'The group of girls turning 12 or 13 will now be called “Builders of Faith,” those turning 14 or 15 will be “Messengers of Hope,” and those 16 or older will be “Gatherers of Light.'
I did notice an interesting tier-structure, which mirrors the levels of heaven.
You've got your low-level laborers at the bottom, building shit. Then there's the Messengers, middle-managers who get a bit more pay for far less work. Then there's the Gatherers who are just gathering light, which is the lightest work of all, enlightened youngsters ruling over their younger, less-equal sisters in Zion.
I'd love to see the men's youth group counterpart names to represent the eternally opposing gender roles.

Wow, big changes in the LDS Church. They're giving women so much leeway over their own organizations!
Clearly, Mormon leadership has come to respect women and expects big things from them! They've put a tremendous amount of trust in them for this monumental job! How inspired! Has any human organization ever been so progressive towards women's liberation?

I saw a white evangelical basically screaming at the camera yesterday on YouTube about patriarchy, racism, capitalism, and SA, ready to split from every Christian, even the progressive ones, and while I disagreed with some of her minor points and her shouting gave me a headache, I'm emotionally so with her.
Would that even 25% of white women had even a portion of her intensity and self-awareness.

In Mormon news, BYU tried to make an indigenous student cut his braids. So fuck them.
Thankfully, they responded to pushback and now will not make him do that, but I'm sure they will continue to get away with all of their other attempts to control the hairstyles and harmless behaviors of literally everyone else.
(Which is why this issue is a "white" cause as much as it is anyone else's. My Celtic and Germanic ancestors wore long hair in all sorts of styles, and so did yours. Whiteness restricts all of our freedoms.)
