He places this in a pathway to heaven—not as a minor caveat but as a central warning. The question is whether we recognize widows and orphans when we see them, particularly when their condition has been unnecessarily created. God, apparently, notices. The pathway Dent describes runs directly past their door.

Attersoll’s logic is unsparing: if you’d condemn someone for hamstringing a man already struggling to walk, why is it harder to condemn those who find elaborate reasons to push down people already barely keeping their heads above water? That's an insight into self-obsession and maybe B.R. identifies one root of today's hyper-individualism.Perhaps our culture's hyper-individualism could be traced to more Christianities which stressed the importance of internal psychological states and events.
