  15. @botanyone That's midnight my time but I'd welcome help from ranunculus experts! These stone carvings dating from 1638-40 were said in 1959 to be #ranunculus but I''m not sure why? Leaves look quite wrong? What is depicted on the right?

  16. Pirates, Sugar and Stone: The Carlton Bank Alum Works

Some industrial stories begin with a balance sheet. This one begins with a privateer’s cannon.

The alum works at Carlton Bank, gorged out of the Cleveland Hills, has a history that stretches from the Caribbean to the Cleveland coast. It is, when you look closely, a rather splendid ...

  19. From Parish Wall to Prime Minister

Despite the slush and the grey skies, snow lends even the most familiar ground a quiet grandeur. Roseberry Topping, half veiled in white, looks less like a hill and more like a stage set, its lines sharpened and its history briefly made visible.

This wall climbing its eastern flank marks the old parish ...

  20. 📚 Hayo just finished reading The Little Ice Age: How Climate Made History 1300-1850 by Brian Fagan

One of those books that was exactly what I was looking for. The author presents a very balanced scientific overview of the interplay between climatic and socio-economic flows. It paints a disturbing picture of our very recent history and gives a glimpse of what could happen in the next few hundred years.

  22. Last night I learnt that #Calvinist #Scotland banned #Christmas in the #17thcentury.

Both my parents were #Irish #Presbyterians of Scottish descent. They celebrated #Xmas.

So tiday I asked my aged mother about anti-Xmas. Her family did Xmas, but the Presbyterian Church in #Sligo didn't. She says it was only in the 1940s that my grandfather persuaded the Sligo Presbyterians to hold a service on #ChristmasDay.

I escaped #Presbyterianism >40yrs ago. But I'm still learning how weird it is.

  23. I love van Dyck drapery, so I would very much like to see the actual painting.

  24. Roseberry Watching Over Enclosed Land

The nearest field in today’s photograph marks the site of the old farmstead of Summerhill, born out of Great Ayton’s enclosure of the common land in 1658. At that time, the commons stretched all the way to the top of Roseberry, open and shared in a way that would soon vanish.

  25. Woman Reading a Letter is a painting by the Dutch Golden Age painter Johannes Vermeer, produced in around 1663. It has been part of the collection of the City of Amsterdam since the Van der Hoop bequest in 1854, and in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam since it opened in 1885, the first Vermeer it acquired.

I love this for its many different shades of one colour…

Challenging, stimulating, at times baffling. I expect I'm going to have to reread this after consulting some of the secondary literature.
