Edouard Manet
A favourite picture of mine. I've probably posted it before, but no matter, because I never tire of it, and I hope that you don't either.

Nicholas Poussin -- Rinaldo and Armida -- 1628/30 -- Dulwich Picture Gallery
>> The subject of the painting comes from the 1581 epic poem Gerusalemme Liberata by Torquato Tasso (1544-95). The poem is set at the time of the First Crusade, at the end of the eleventh century, and follows the tale of fighting Christians and Saracens. In this scene, the Saracen sorceress Armida moves to kill the sleeping crusader Rinaldo. Just as she is about to strike, however, she falls in love with the Christian hero. << (Dulwich Picture Gallery)
I've been engrossed in Richard Wollheim's account of this picture in "Painting as an Art". I won't attempt here to summarize his argument, but will instead jump to his conclusion, "that for Poussin the victory of reason over concupiscence is achieved through reason borrowing the resources of concupiscence. For him the defeat of desire by reason is experienced as the victory of one kind of desire over another."
This understanding of the picture is close to my own approach to thinking about ethics and value, one that owes much to Hume's description of reason as a slave to the passions. Wollheim, however, does not present an argument about metaethics; instead, he invites us join with him at looking deeply into the picture and follow his argument about how we see a picture, how a knowledge of other pictures might help us better understand this one, and how the picture can be both informed by an understanding of psychology and also enrich that understanding.
Some of Wollheim's claims in "Painting as an Art" strike me as tenuously supported conjectures, but his attention to the paintings themselves always excites me. His writing makes me long to go back to the pictures themselves, this stimulus being a sign of good writing about art.
I've written about a closely related scene from Tasso before as represented by....

"Pot of Flowers," Édouard Vuillard, c. 1900-01.
Vuillard and his Nabi cohorts are great favorites of mine. I take great delight in Vuillard's work; his love of pattern and skill in depicting it appeal to me greatly. I remember just standing in awe in front of one of his paintings at the Met, to the point that the security guards were starting to eye me suspiciously...
The Nabis loved intimate scenes, and this fits. What's a standout is that this isn't a formally arranged still life...it's just a scene from his studio, painted as is, almost like a casual photograph.

"Still Life, or, La Table Garnie," Henri Fantin-Latour, 1866.
Fantin-Latour (1836-1904) was a Realist in the period of Impressionism. Although that may make him seem out-of-step and stuffy, he wasn't.
He produced a series of self-portraits early in his career, but in the 1860s began to focus mostly on still lifes, like this one. This was partly because they showed his strengths at depicting color and texture, but also, like Impressionism, it was a rebellion against the academic standards of art (that one must follow the classical masters, and that art should focus on historical, religious, or mythical themes, and have Meaning), that held still lifes in disdain and considered them a minor genre. And despite not being an Impressionist, he still exhibited with his friends Manet, Monet, and Renoir. So while his still lifes may seem rather conventional and conformist to modern eyes, in context they were actually rebellious and avant-garde.
So, enjoy these flowers as an act of rebellion!

Norbert Goeneutte -- Smiling Woman Reclining on a Sofa (Femme souriant etendue sur un canape)- Drypoint -- early 1890s (?) -- National Gallery of Art, Washington DC --Public domain
I like the contrast between the pale face and the dark hair and collar. The artist's rendering of the various fabrics impresses me too. In addition, the unusual pose is striking.

"Madame de Pompadour," Francois Boucher, 1756.
Boucher (1703-1770) is one of the icons of French Rococo art, and is as much known for his decorative work as he is for his painting. He also designed tapestries, theatrical backdrops, and did a number of etchings and engravings.
He had a fondness for painting beautiful women, as we see here, but he was notable for how respectful he was toward them in his art. Even his nudes lacked a leering quality; he had a knack for showing his women having an inner life and not merely being glorified centerfolds. I mean, they ARE exploitative in a manner, but at least he tries to present them in a more naturalistic and human way.
I love her gown; the color, and the pink flowers, are delightful. And he puts a book in her hand, and surrounds her not just with flowers and the trappings of wealth, but also books, letters, and papers. This is a beauty with an active mind.
From the Alte Pinakothek, Munich.

"Nude Woman Reading," Robert Delaunay, 1915.
Delaunay (1885-1941) was one of the founders of Orphism, a short-lived style of art that was a bridge between Cubism and Abstract Art.
He didn't do many nudes, but he painted nine variations on this scene with varying degrees of abstraction. This is pretty representational; although she's fairly abstract, we get enough with her hair and the fat rolls on her side that make her seem genuine and real. The oval framing of the painting accentuates her curve. And the bold colors are definitely Delaunay; he loved experimenting with color and hue.
This is technically a sort of semi-abstract, but nicely captures a moment alone when a woman, either dressing or un-, is taken by something on the page before her.
From the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne.

"Landscape with a Calm," Nicolas Poussin, 1650-51.
Poussin (1594-1665) painted this as a companion piece to another painting, "Landscape with a Storm," which explains a few things. He was one of the great figures of the classical French Baroque period, and was known for his historical, religious, and mythical-themed works, which all had narratives and sent messages.
This painting comes from a time when he moved to doing landscapes without any story or message. Poussin did most of his work in Rome, and often took sketching trips up and down Italy to get ideas for his work. This may have been born from one or more of those sketches.
From the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles.

"Haystacks, Morning, Éragny," Camille Pissarro, 1899.
The great Impressionist Pissarro was best known for his scenes of contemporary urban life, but he enjoyed country life as well. Like his friend Monet, he undertook to paint the haystacks near his home in different lights and in different times of the year.
The summertime atmosphere is palpable here...one can easily imagine the dew on the grass and the sound of the leaves rustling in the wind.

"Grainstacks at Giverny; the Evening Sun," Claude Monet, 1888/89.
Monet painted 25 of these grainstacks paintings, at different times of the day and in different seasons. They remain the foundational works of Impressionism, which was all about the effects of light.
And since it's harvest time, this is seasonal. The days are getting shorter, the crops are being reaped (if not already) and before we know it Thanksgiving will be here...
From the Museum of Modern Art, Saitana, Japan.

I am well aware of the art historical importance of the impressionists, but most of their work does not excite me. The big exception is Degas, but he is something of an outlier amongst them.
