#OTD 17 August 1761, William Carey was born in Paulerspury, #Northamptonshire. Sometimes known as the "Father of Modern Missions" despite colonial connotations, Carey is still held in high esteem in India for his promotion of Bengali culture and social reforms. Booth—Baptist pastor, Alabama—presents the Greatest Commandments as a standard against which believers must test themselves until conformity is actually attained. Today, it seems that considerable “apologetics” energy goes toward stifling that prick of conscience—explaining why sufferers chose their lot, or why their cry threatens civilisation. Booth would recognise this as failing the test.

Why the hell is a mainline #Baptist church sponsoring an anti-psychiatry propaganda event funded by the Church of Scientology? Maclaren—Scottish Baptist—holds two things simultaneously: slavery was itself the greatest of all wrongs, and yet Paul still expected the slave to maintain certain duties, ruling out bloody revolt as remedy. Two truths, no contradiction. Contemporary discourse struggles with this skill—discrediting traditions over one error while still quoting Edwards.

William Knibb, Baptist missionary advocating against slavery, recounted horrors he’d witnessed in Jamaica. A Church of Scotland minister countered with scripture: Paul says servants should obey masters. Someone shot back, in broad Scots brogue, “The devil can quote scripture as well as you.” Defending abuse while citing the Bible as cover is its own special outrage. We still see this. How would those who serve you (at a diner, for ex.) speak of you, generations on?

Spurgeon laments that George Whitefield ran his orphanage on enslaved labor and never questioned whether slavery was sinful. Spurgeon allowed for advancing light: future generations might judge his own habits essentially bad. Modern Christendom has largely inverted this—the live question is whether criticizing godly men of the past constitutes the sin.
But how would *you* fare in future assessments.

Angus observes that the command to love your neighbor as yourself, measured against the actual diversity of human behaviour, yields a unanimous verdict: guilty, everywhere, without exception. The culture war has since divided this insight neatly in two — one side keeps the neighbor, loses the God; the other keeps the condemnation, loses the neighbor. Angus, inconveniently, insists on both.

Knibb appeals to Britons’ tenderness, their fortitude, and their love of liberty — and deploys all three in the same direction: ending slavery. It’s worth noting that these virtues were once considered mutually reinforcing. Today they are more commonly arranged in opposition, with fortitude and liberty summoned specifically to overcome tenderness — particularly, it seems, any tenderness about slavery.

Maclaren—Scottish Baptist, expounding Acts—says the Incarnation creates a bond of universal brotherhood: Christ took every man’s nature and brought all into one. The early church’s communal sharing was the visible witness of this. Some Calvinist applications of “Esau I hated” have drifted from Calvin’s own instructions about kindness. More Calvinist than Calvin is a specific achievement.

Strong—Baptist, seminary president—places moral responsibility on the saloon that entices, not merely the drinker. Christians should stand for the weak against the strong. The church has been losing ground by attending to its own concerns. This conflicts equally with liberalism’s celebration of debauchery and conservatism’s quietism about exploitation. Strong would find both inadequate.

Spurgeon: stop giving to charitable societies—if you have time, be your own society. Visit the sick yourself; you’ll know the money is well spent and save the secretary’s salary.
One notes the modern alternative: become your own detective agency. Build a case against the society, document the unworthy recipients, establish the wastage. This approach also spares the expense of giving, which may be the actual point.

Spurgeon—particular Baptist, London—points out that certain businesses cannot function if employees tell the truth. Firing offence. He adds that professing Christians are keeping the whole operation running, lacking courage to say we want nothing to do with this. Pastoral warnings about workplace complicity are somewhat rarer than warnings about other sins. The stamp, apparently, must run.

This is an excerpt from a memoir I'm kinda sorta writing. It's about the time a giant cross nearly killed me. Trust me, it's funnier than that sounds.
