It's time to formally introduce myself here! Hi, I'm Rachel Tobac 🤖🤟 I'm a hacker and the CEO of SocialProof Security. We help orgs mitigate human-based cybersecurity threats with training, talks, videos, demos, workshops & pentests.
You'll see me talk about human-based hacking, up to date social engineering tactics in the news, the latest human factor security tips, tricks to catch cyber criminals, and more.
Fun facts:
- Used to perform improv (and before that, musical theater) before I got into hacking. Improv is super helpful in my human-based hacks and musical theater is helpful for my shanties.
- I got 2nd place in the social engineering contest at DEF CON three years in a row. Consistency is key lmao
- My degree is in Neuroscience. I focused on Behavioral Neuroscience and worked on rats in college -- yes, I successfully kept every rat subject alive during brain surgery!
- I have the cutest rescue dog named Snugs, I'm sure you'll see me post pictures of him here.
- My career path was super non linear: Neuroscience and Behavioral Psychology degree > Teaching > Community Management > UX Research Lead > Hacker > CEO. I love to hear about other non linear career paths.#introduction #cybersecurity #hacking #socialengineering #HumanHacking

Souring On Artificial Intelligence
There’s an interesting article in the New York Times called Why Do Americans Hate A.I.? The article goes through the litany of some of the bugaboos just about anyone can recite from memory these days: jobs, trust, and agency. As fast as Artificial Intelligence has dominated the conversation warnings about the ptifalls have run side by side in what I think resembles a barefooted three-legged sack race over broken glass.
Over the holidays at what seemed like an infinite number of family gatherings I picked up on some interesting themes that I mentioned in my end of year post about all things Apple that I think is worth calling out here again. Everyday Janes and Joes are souring on artificial intelligence, not for any of the now almost clichéd anti-AI reasons, but after everyday unsatisfactory encounters with their doctors, banks, and any number of the other institutions and business that they deal with.
As I said in that post about Apple,
I also think Apple and the other tech companies need to pay attention to the warning signs that are starting to bubble up about Artificial Intelligence. I think most of the growing distaste of AI comes not from what these tech companies are offering on computing platforms, but from the day to day encounters people are experiencing in their daily lives as more and more non-tech companies roll out versions of AI support. The way I’m hearing and feeling it, jokes and complaints about AI at holiday gatherings this year are starting to compete in numbers with ones about government and politics.
Because money rules the roost, most of the conversations we hear about Artificial Intelligence center on how much money is being spent propping up and expanding the bubble that is keeping a sagging economy afloat like a hot balloon on a cloudy day. There’s only so much liquefied propane in any tank once things lift off.
Here’s the thing about holiday family gatherings. I can’t remember one when conversations didn’t at some point offer up a “you’ve got to try this” recommendation or some sort of eye-grabbing new thing or trend that captured attention along with the usual complaints and grievances. But AI-negative conversations seemed to take precedence on the grievance side of the ledger this year.
Everyday folks don’t care about who wins the AI technology race or who has the best on device AI or how many tokens a system offers. They care about getting results in less time and more so, getting it done with a human they can talk to, not a robot in a chat window. So far based on the jokes, swearing and condescending attitudes I’m hearing (anecdotally, I admit) everyday folks aren’t buying the pitch, but they’re getting closer to picking up the tar.
We can talk about data centers, job efficiencies and job losses, chatbots, AI slop, and scientific advancements all day long, but when everyday folks on the ground develop a distaste for what you’re selling and turn your efforts into the butt of a joke, eventually you need to discount or clear out the inventory no matter how many data center servers you pop up.
Even so, perhaps that’s the aim of the A.I. purveyors. If they salt the fields with enough of their product to the point that everyone condescendingly abides it the way they do government, it may not matter if it doesn’t offer any harvest that yields nutrition, just that it yields a ubiquitous tolerance.

Wild Water Buffalo Bubalus arnee
Wild Water Buffalo Bubalus arnee
IUCN Red List Status: Endangered
Location: India, Nepal, Bhutan, Thailand, Cambodia, Myanmar.
Wild Water Buffaloes survive mainly in Kaziranga and Manas National Parks (Assam), Udanti Wildlife Sanctuary (Chhattisgarh), Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve (Nepal), with reintroduction potential identified in Kanha National Park (Madhya Pradesh).Massive, muscular, and critically under threat, the Wild Water Buffalo Bubalus arnee is the endangered ancestor of all domestic buffalo breeds. Once roaming vast swathes of South and Southeast Asia, fewer than 4,000 individual buffaloes remain today, scattered across shrinking habitats in India, Nepal, Cambodia, and a handful of neighbouring nations. Their decline is driven by interbreeding with domestic buffalo species, habitat destruction from farming and palm oil plantations, hunting, and disease transmission from livestock. This ancient grazer of flooded grasslands and braided rivers is vanishing before our eyes. Speak out for them and support indigenous-led efforts to restore their ecosystems. #BoycottPalmOil #Boycott4Wildlife

Share to BlueSky Share to TwitterWild Buffaloes like most other large herbivores, require large spaces with adequate food and water supply to survive which is negatively impacted by fragmentation and degradation of forest and grassland areas.
IUCN Red ListAppearance and Behaviour
Towering and formidable, Wild Water Buffaloes are among the largest bovines on Earth. Mature bulls can weigh up to 1,200 kg, with sweeping, crescent-shaped horns that curve outward and back, often spanning more than two metres. Their coats are slate-grey to black, and their muscular frames are well adapted for traversing muddy, floodplain environments.
They are deeply dependent on water and spend much of their time wallowing in rivers, oxbow lakes, or self-made mud holes to cool down and protect themselves from insects. These highly social animals form matriarchal herds of 10 to 20 individuals, with bachelor groups and solitary bulls more common in less disturbed areas. Their movements follow seasonal changes in water availability, and they show remarkable loyalty to traditional trails, using the same routes for generations.
Diet
Wild Water Buffaloes are primarily grazers and feed on tall grasses such as Cynodon dactylon, Themeda quadrivalvis, and Coix species. They are also known to consume sedges like Cyperus corymbosus, herbs, bark, and crop plants including rice, jute, and sugarcane, which brings them into conflict with nearby human communities. They have also shown an ability to tolerate brackish water, giving them access to areas other species cannot utilise.
Reproduction and Mating
Wild Water Buffaloes are seasonal breeders, with most mating occurring in October and November. Gestation lasts 10 to 11 months, and females usually give birth to one calf per year. Sexual maturity is reached around 18 months for males and three years for females. Their reproductive system is polygynous, with dominant bulls mating with multiple females. In the wild, they can live up to 25 years, although most do not reach this age due to threats from humans and habitat disruption.
Geographic Range
Wild Water Buffaloes were once distributed widely across South and Southeast Asia, but today, they persist in only about 5% of their historical range. Approximately 90% of the global population is now confined to India, with two genetically distinct and geographically isolated populations—one in the northeast (Assam) and another in central India (Chhattisgarh). The central Indian population is extremely fragile, with just a handful of individuals, and is in urgent need of conservation action to prevent its extinction (Bora et al., 2024).
In Nepal, the species is now restricted to the Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve, with a population of around 400 individuals. This reserve provides a mosaic of seasonally flooded grasslands and wetlands, offering suitable but limited habitat. Camera-trap studies confirm that Wild Water Buffaloes are increasingly clustered in the reserve’s southwestern zone, preferring low-lying grasslands with limited human interference (Bhattarai et al., 2023). The species is now extinct in Laos, Viet Nam, and Bangladesh, and its presence in Cambodia, Myanmar, and Thailand is uncertain or highly fragmented.
Wild Water Buffalo via RoundGlass SustainThreats
Loss of Range and Isolation
A staggering 95% contraction in their historical distribution has left Wild Water Buffaloes clinging to survival in fragmented pockets. The central Indian population, in particular, is critically isolated and no longer viable without direct human intervention. Habitat modelling shows that suitable grassland habitats still exist, such as in Kanha National Park, but these remain unoccupied due to historical extirpation and lack of reintroduction efforts (Bora et al., 2024).
Hybridisation with Domestic Buffalo
Hybridisation remains a top threat to genetic purity. In Koshi Tappu, the proximity of domestic buffalo to wild herds—though minimal—still raises concerns about genetic introgression. Reproductive behaviour studies show that wild males may attempt to mate with nearby domestic females, undermining long-term conservation unless such risks are actively mitigated (Bhattarai et al., 2023).
Human Encroachment and Agricultural Expansion
Human encroachment and agricultural expansion continue to erode the grasslands needed by Bubalus arnee. In central India, overgrazing by livestock, road development, and conversion of alluvial plains to farmland have nearly eliminated their habitat. Even in protected areas like Koshi Tappu, disturbances such as flooding, roadkill, and poaching have impacted population stability and reproductive output (Bhattarai et al., 2023).
Low Reproductive Success and Skewed Sex Ratios
Research in Nepal has shown that although the population of Bubalus arnee has grown modestly in recent years, it is limited by low recruitment. Male-biased mortality—particularly from poaching and environmental threats—has disrupted natural sex ratios and herd structures, reducing breeding success and calf survival rates (Bhattarai et al., 2023). This creates an urgent need for better protection during calving seasons and enhanced anti-poaching patrols.
Historical and Cultural Significance of Wild Water Buffaloes
Wild Water Buffaloes have played a central role in the development of civilisations across Asia for over 6,000 years. In the Indus Valley Civilisation, they were traded with Mesopotamia, and a scribe’s seal from that time depicts the sacrifice of a buffalo. In India, the Hindu god of death, Yama, is depicted riding a water buffalo, and in some Shaktism festivals, a male buffalo is still ritually sacrificed.
In Chinese culture, the water buffalo is associated with a peaceful, contemplative lifestyle, symbolising hard work and serenity. In Vietnam and Thailand, buffalo feature prominently in folklore and agricultural festivals, including water buffalo fighting events that date back centuries. In the Philippines, the carabao—a swamp-type domestic buffalo—has become a national symbol, reflecting its role in farming and cultural heritage. The Minangkabau of West Sumatra even derive their name and architectural style from a legendary buffalo battle used to resist imperial rule.
Take Action!
The Wild Water Buffalo is more than a relic of the past—it is a living icon of Asia’s ancient riverine ecosystems. Protecting this species means defending wetlands, grasslands, and the cultures that have coexisted with these powerful animals for millennia.
Reject palm oil, demand indigenous-led agroecology, and help stop the extinction of one of the world’s last true wild bovines.

FAQs
How many Wild Water Buffaloes remain?
Estimates suggest fewer than 4,000 individuals survive globally, with around 90% located in India. Nepal’s population in Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve was recently estimated at around 405 animals (Subedi et al., 2023).
What’s the difference between Wild and Domestic Water Buffaloes?
Wild Water Buffaloes are larger, have broader heads, and possess distinct, sweeping horns. They are genetically distinct and more suited to wild floodplain habitats. Most domestic buffalo breeds descend from them, but hybridisation is rapidly blurring the line.
Why is species hybridisation a serious threat to Wild Water Buffaloes?
Hybridisation permanently alters the wild gene pool. It dilutes adaptive traits and may lead to the loss of behaviours or features essential for survival in the wild. Once the species is hybridised, it cannot be restored to its original form.
Do Wild Water Buffaloes make good pets?
Absolutely not. Keeping them as pets contributes directly to their extinction. These are powerful, wild animals who suffer greatly in captivity, and their removal from the wild disrupts natural herds and genetics.
How does palm oil deforestation affect Wild Water Buffaloes?
Floodplain and riverine habitats are increasingly cleared for palm oil plantations, especially in Southeast Asia. This destroys critical wallowing sites and pushes buffaloes into contact with domestic animals and humans, leading to conflict, disease, and death

#introduction @buddhism
@veganMahayana Refuge:
I go for refuge until I am enlightened
to the Buddha, the Dharma and the Supreme Assembly.
Through the merit of practising generosity and so on,
May I become a Buddha for the benefit of all beingsBodhicitta:
May all sentient beings have happiness and its causes, may all sentient beings be free of suffering and its causes, may they be inseparable from the sublime happiness which is beyond sorrow, may all sentient beings abide in equanimity, free of bias, attachment and anger.Shantideva Prayer:
May I become at all times, both now and forever
A protector of those without protection
A guide for those who have lost their way
A ship for those with oceans to cross
A bridge for those with rivers to cross
A sanctuary for those in danger
A lamp for those without light
A place of refuge for those who lack shelter
And a servant to all in need
For as long as space endures,
And for as long as living beings remain,
Until then may I, too, abide
To dispel the misery of the world.Biography:
I am a happily married English Buddhist, 68 years old, living these past 38 years in Slovenia. I was raised a Catholic and attended a Jesuit school but lost my faith in God when I was 15. After graduating in Industrial Engineering I traveled overland along the old hippie trail to India in search of answers to the pain I felt in the world. I encountered Buddhism in Dharamsala, home-in-exile of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Back in London I joined Sogyal Rinpoche's Rigpa group in 1981 and started practicing the Dharma.I have been a production assistant in London, bartender in Hong Kong, English teacher in South Korea, planning engineer in London and Fife, Scotland, and a development engineer, planner, import-export agent and translator in Ljubljana, Slovenia.
Besides being interested in living mindfully and preserving the Buddha Dharma, I am also an advocate of democracy, peace, non-violence, human and animal rights, a free Tibet, a democratic Burma, the right of Palestinians to a homeland, the prevention of human trafficking, gender equality, LGBTQI rights worldwide, veganism, the abolition of capital punishment, amnesty to prisoners of conscience, etc. I am also interested in supporting poverty alleviation and humanitarian work of any kind as well as sustainable development, education, protection of the environment and mental health and other health issues.
My Dharma practice comprises keeping the five precepts (mind trainings) for a lay Buddhist and practicing the six perfections (far-reaching practices) of Mahayana Buddhism - generosity, ethical conduct, forbearance, perseverance, concentration and, wisdom - as an aspiring Bodhisattva. I also like to consider myself a "socially engaged Buddhist" with my principle outlet being a keyboard campaigner for human, animal and environmental causes on social media and a vegan/animal rights activist locally.
As a part of keeping the five precepts, I practice veganism to the best of my ability and to the forefront of my practice I try to generate beginner's mind (don't know mind) as well as loving kindness and compassion both towards self and others.
Besides my favourite practice tonglen, my meditation these days is primarily of the analytical kind but always includes understanding that firstly, everyone wants to be be happy and avoid suffering and secondly, everyone has shown kindness to me in this life and past lives.
Politically I support The Green Party of England and Wales, the European Greens, American Democratic Socialists and the Levica (Left) Party in SloveniaI am a vegan and don't smoke, drink alcohol or do drugs.
With my Slovene wife, Mojca, we have a son, Tom, now aged 37.

#VIDEO DierenPark Amersfoort in the Netherlands has recently welcomed a new resident, a ten-month-old #RedPanda named Kawai.
He has been introduced to his fellow #RodePanda, Shanti, and their neighbors, the peacocks. The two are often seen climbing the tall trees together, where they spend much of their day sleeping.

I certainly wasn't expecting a cover of Shanti from Suisei. I also was not ready for it either.

This White Rose tea from Shanti Tea surprised me. It's not something I would have normally tried, but my mom was interested so I got her some. She brewed me a cup one day without telling me what it was. I was like, "Is this some kind of Baihao??" (I was thinking of white tip oolong where the leaves are bitten by insects to release a honey taste; its popular name is Oriental/Eastern Beauty.) It has a very full-bodied luxurious honey fragrance!
