  2. AFP:Greenhouse gas levels hit new record highs in 2025: UN (Oct 27, 2026)

Greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere rose to new record highs in 2025, locking in climate impacts that will persist for centuries to come, the United Nations said Tuesday.

Levels of the three main greenhouse gases -- the climate-warming carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide -- all rose to unprecedented figures in 2025, the UN's weather and climate agency said.

  5. Spectral Signatures Of Tidal Forcing: Spatiotemporal Patterns Of Groundwater–Surface Water Exchange In A Tidal Creek System

    H/T @sven Frei | Computational Hydrologist @ Wageningen University | Hydrology–Biogeochemistry | Physics-Informed Neural Networks | Water Quality & Eutrophication | Modelling water, nutrients & contaminants with process-based models and AI
“🌊 What really drives groundwater exchange in tidal creeks? The answer is more complex than the tides alone!
How do tides, weather, and coastal infrastructure interact to control the exchange of water between surface water and groundwater? And can we capture these dynamics at high temporal resolution?
In our new study from Texel, the Netherlands, [the authors] combine sediment temperature monitoring with physics-informed neural networks (PINNs) to unravel the hidden dynamics of surface water–groundwater (SW–GW) exchange.
    🔍 WHAT DID [THEY] FIND?:
🌊 Two zones, two hydrological regimes: A dike–flood gate system separates the creek into a tidally influenced, net-infiltrating seaward zone and a landward zone dominated by persistent groundwater discharge.
☀️ It's not just about the tides: The diurnal K1 signal dominates the exchange dynamics, while the semidiurnal M2 tide appears intermittently.
🌗 Spring–neap cycles matter, too: The fortnightly tidal cycle systematically modulates exchange fluxes.
🤖 A new way to see the invisible: By combining temperature time series with PINN-based inversion, [they] reconstruct[ed] continuous, high-resolution groundwater fluxes over 51 days.
💡 The bigger picture: Coastal groundwater exchange is shaped by the interplay of marine, terrestrial, and human influences. Understanding these interactions is essential for predicting solute transport, nutrient cycling, and contaminant fate at the land–sea interface..."

  6. #Journal of a slightly rested Dutch AuDHD Pixy :pixy_party: (Sunday, 25/10/2026).

For some reason, the "gods of snoozing" gave me two decent enough sleeps in a row (so of course I had to jinx that at the end of the day 🫣). But when I woke up, I felt a tiny bit rested. I was sore from being in one position for some time. But heck, I was sore anyway, due to all the "lovely" weather we'd been having... As yesterday, we woke up during storm Austen, today we woke up during storm Boelo...

Koa wanted to go into the garden, but then he saw the weather, and he was not even interested in all the swirling leaves 🍃 going around the yard. But he also didn't want to do his things. I fixed his food, and tried to let him out again after that. He tried to gobble up some of the crazy leaves, before he wanted to quickly get back inside. But that meant that I had less time, before I'd have to become the bright banana again, and brave the awful weather. It was even worse than yesterday, as the grond couldn't handle all the rain (as it was still "processing" all of yesterday's rain), and some of the paths behind the house were more like little brooks...

I wrote an email to my friend, and then I quickly had to get dressed, as Koa needed his potty break (and I totally understood). We braved the weather, and I knew with paths to avoid now, as there was just so much water... Koa was able to do his things, which was good to see. When we got back home, after peeling off the wet "banana skin", and trying to dry off the dude, we got back to the couch.

I started writing Saturday's journal Toot. It went rather well. Had a little break for some brekkie. And I'd given Koa his Sunday snack. It was/is a special Sunday after all, as it was Koa's 8-month anniversary. Just four more months and the dude will celebrate his first birthday already! 😁 I was able to finish the Toot, which felt good. I got my laptop and worked a bit on my journal blog post, adding the texts from the previous days, and adding images to them.

And then... Back to becoming a wet bright banana again, as Koa wanted to head out for walkies again. I was all in for a short walk, as I preferred to be inside during weather like this. Koa, on the other hand (or should that be paw? 😉), he was all in for walkies and sniffs and all of that... So yeah, another round where we came back from, dripping all over...

I watched a bit of telly while Koa was enjoying his snack. And then, I changed some clothes, and got to the treadmill for half an hour. I didn't manage as "good" a walk as the previous day, but still got half an hour in with 2,18km on the counter. I washed up and relaxed for a bit. The good thing was, that the weather seemed to be slowly getting better! The huge rain front was finally drifting over. Koa wanted to head out, and I was dreading it a bit, until I checked again, and it was as good as dry! Yay for that! 😁

After walkies, I fixed food for the dude and then for myself as well. After that, most of morning consisted of trying to relax a bit and walkies with the dude. Near the end of the morning, I fixed Koa's meal and got things prepped for bedtime and the gym. We had an early alarm again, so Koa and I could head to Nijmegen in the late evening so I could visit the gym.

We were in bed in time, so I could get enough sleep. Unfortunately, this wasn't happening... Koa slept more on the bed than I slept in it. When we had to get up, I had slept less than two hours 😢. But, I got up and dressed and Koa and I started our "day".

Thanks to all for your kindness and support during my "journey through daily life" :bear_love: I really appreciate it :bear_hugs: as it helps me to keep going on bad/harder days! :bear_nuzzle:

  9. How did the grid react as Storm Austen and Storm Boelo passed through over the weekend?

This is something I pulled together over the weekend. It's part of a new video format that I'm exploring to better explain what's going on within the energy system and the wider context surrounding it (such as the weather).

As always, a huge credit is due to all the open data sources that make these visuals possible. I've listed them all at the end of the video, please check them out.

Seldom has the weather been more perfect for a morning run, with the sun slowly rising and unfolding its power. I stopped frequently for pics, a small collection is attached. Have a great week, y’all!

I enjoy being outside. It's why I have dogs, so they drag me out multiple times a day in every weather.
I think it is better for my exposition to nature - which I do enjoy exploring in my work - than my creativity per se. And it does contribute massively to my well-being, which is also good for creativity.

  17. Why is it always maples. Always the prettiest colors. Some turn red, others turn yellow, some orange. Or all colors on the same tree :neofoxfloofowo:

There was a tiny forest outside the botanical garden where the grass is only cut around it in a circle. In the center was a large tree stump and a lot of tiny maples growing around it. Kinda cute little place.

But you need the correct weather for these and for once have to have the scene backlit by the sun so they get really bright instead of boring looking.

Edit: yeah well, Mastodon cuts off my orange maple, the 5th photo. Without even mentioning it :neofoxgooglywoozy:

"How Chemicals and Climate Change Threaten Fertility Across Species

Across the globe, a quiet but profound crisis is unfolding in the bodies of humans and wildlife alike. A growing body of research is showing that toxic chemicals and climate change are not only separate threats. They are working together in ways that undermine fertility across species, with implications that reach far beyond individual health. A recent review in NPJ Emerging Contaminants pulls these threads together, highlighting how exposure to synthetic chemicals, many of them endocrine disrupting chemicals, intersects with rising temperatures and other climate impacts to put reproduction at risk.

The review describes a world where animals, from insects to humans, live in a constant state of simultaneous exposure. Synthetic chemicals are present in air, water, soil, and food. At the same time, climate change is driving higher temperatures, altered rainfall patterns, and more extreme weather. This combined pressure creates a difficult environment for reproduction, one of the most sensitive and essential biological processes. The authors note that these stressors are not rare or isolated. They form the daily backdrop of life for countless species.

One of the most striking aspects of the research is how similar the effects appear across very different forms of life. Whether looking at fish, reptiles, birds, mammals, or humans, the review reports consistent patterns of harm to eggs and sperm. Fertility can decline, reproductive cycles can shift, and the delicate coordination of hormones that underpins reproduction can falter. These endocrine disrupting chemicals, or EDCs, interfere with normal hormone function and can derail development and reproduction even at very low levels of exposure."

  23. Asocial

I came home from work some time ago to find my wife settling down to watch the latest episode of Coronation Street.

Onscreen, a new family had recently moved on to the street, and the Dad was shown talking to a couple of the regular characters, making arrangements to do something, and it struck me – in just 3 minutes of screen time, a brand new character had exchanged more words with his neighbours than I had in the 10 1/2 years I had lived here.

Which got me thinking – of all the things I know, how to make friends isn’t one.

Out of all my friends (at least, out in the so-called “real world”), all of them decided I was a person they wanted to be friends with, they did all the running, and all I did was decide to go along with them.

This was rarely something I did lightly – there were plenty of people who decided we were going to be friends, but I decided to have nothing to do with them – but with all the people I count as friends, they did all the running, and I just went along with it.

It’s the same with relationships – off hand, I can only think of 6 times I asked girls out – 2 of them turned me down flat, 2 were the same girl on 2 different occasions (and I eventually asked her to marry me – which later happened!), and the other 2 times ended pretty disastrously. Every other time I got into a relationship, they did all the running after me, and I just went along with it.

On a related note, I have no idea how small talk works – this is an essential skill for developing all manner of relationships, and yet I have not a single clue as to the purpose of small talk, nor how it works – I can do it, but only by copying conversational gambits I’ve seen other people use, which means that conversations with me can often be stilted, and are liable to turn rather strange at unexpected moments.

By extension, flirting (and “chatting someone up”) is also something where I utterly fail to grasp any mechanism by which it works. As I said about small talk, I can do it, I just have no idea what I’m doing.

Actually, I would like to modify those statements – I can do small talk and flirting, but only if I don’t think about it – as soon as I start to think about what I am doing, or what I should say next, I turn in to Cat in the infamous dance/dream sequence from Red Dwarf ( https://youtu.be/yn8wWQweNbU ) – I get tongue-tied, and completely unable to communicate.

Which, let’s face it, isn’t good, whether you’re discussing the weather with the random person sitting next to you on the bus home from work, or chatting up some random stranger in a bar.

I’ve no idea if it is connected to all this, but I have always had a preference for my own company – not having to fill any silences or think of topics of conversation is always pleasant.

I remember back in school, I had a friend I spent a lot of time with – many were the times we finished school, went to the local library to collect some books, then went back to his, where we would occupy chairs at opposite sides of his living room, then read books in silence, until the time I had to leave to go home – about the only thing his mother ever heard me say was “Right, I’d better get off. See ya!”

One of the things I love about my marriage, and my wife – we often spend time just being in the same room – not necessarily talking, not necessarily doing the same thing, but doing whatever it is we are doing, together.

One of us might be watching telly while the other reads, or she might be doing something on her computer, usually doing some family history research, and I’ll walk in with my laptop and slouch down in a chair and do some writing for one project or another – but we are doing it, together, just enjoying being with someone.

Louise’s office is by the front window of the dining room, and I will often be found in the kitchen, through the rear of the dining room, cooking up a storm, while we listen to some music, which usually involves one of us dancing our way over to the other and busting some moves for a few seconds before going back to what we were doing.

We might also be talking  – but no-one is being forced to talk, only when we are ready, which I find makes conversations flow more easily.

And this is the thing – I’m not, as some people think, anti-social, I don’t hate people, I don’t want to avoid having friends – I just want friends who are on my wavelength, friendships on my terms – friends who are willing to accept that I don’t always want to be drawn into conversation, but when I feel the need to talk will accept that as well.

I’m asocial, quite possibly because of my autism, and proud of it.

Social interactions leave me physically and mentally exhausted – which means that, if I put any time or effort into interacting with you, then you should feel honoured.

(Or I’m at work, and have to put the minimum effort in!)

The Autonomous Kitchen: Why Vegetarian Gardening Is Your Best Defense Against Rising Food Prices

Walk down the produce aisle of any local supermarket today, and you are met with a quiet, persistent shock. Price tags for organic greens, imported tomatoes, and even humble root vegetables have climbed to levels that make a weekly grocery run feel like an exercise in budgeting gymnastics. Inflation, supply chain vulnerabilities, and transportation overheads have turned fresh produce into a luxury commodity.

Yet, right outside our back doors—or on a sunny apartment balcony, a postage-stamp patio, or even a well-lit windowsill—lies an alternative.

Vegetarian gardening is no longer just a pleasant weekend hobby or an aesthetic lifestyle choice. For the modern household trying to wrestle back control over monthly expenses, growing your own food has become a practical act of economic self-defense. And contrary to popular belief, you do not need acres of pristine farmland, expensive motorized tillers, or a degree in horticulture to make a serious dent in your grocery bill.

If you have ever considered growing your own food, there is no better time to start than right now. Even as the seasons transition and the weather cools, a strategic approach to beginner gardening can yield fresh, nutrient-dense crops, slash your food overheads, and transform the way you interact with what you eat.

The Economics of Home Cultivation: Why Every Dollar Invested Counts

When people first think about starting a vegetable garden, they often make the mistake of comparing homegrown food to the cheapest, highly subsidized, mass-produced items at the discount grocery store. If you measure success solely against a head of iceberg lettuce priced at rock-bottom wholesale rates, a garden might seem like an expensive way to buy dirt.

However, the real financial power of a vegetable garden lies in targeting high-value, high-yield, and perishable crops—the exact items that cost the most at checkout.

    • The Organic Markup: Organic specialty produce commands a massive premium. Growing your own using organic methods strips out that markup entirely.
    • The Perishability Penalty: Delicate greens, fresh culinary herbs, and vine-ripened tomatoes spoil quickly in transit and on store shelves, driving up retail prices to account for waste. When you harvest these items 30 seconds before you cook them, food waste drops to zero, and your savings skyrocket.
    • The Yield Multiplier: A single, well-tended tomato plant or a vigorous zucchini bush can produce pounds of fruit over a season, turning a packet of seeds costing a few dollars into dozens of meals. Bonnie Plants

By focusing your efforts intelligently, a small backyard setup or a collection of containers can easily trim a meaningful amount off your monthly food budget, paying for its initial setup costs many times over.

Timing Is Everything: Embracing the Cool-Season Shift

A common misconception among beginner gardeners is that growing season ends abruptly with the summer heat. In reality, nature operates on multiple gears. While heat-loving crops like standard tomatoes and peppers wind down as autumn deepens, a whole suite of cool-season champions actually prefer crisp air and mild temperatures.

NC State Extension Publications – NC State University

In fact, growing vegetables in cooler weather offers distinct advantages:

    1. Fewer Pests: Many common garden insects—such as aphids, flea beetles, and tomato hornworms—are far less active in cooler weather, meaning less time spent managing pest problems.
    2. Enhanced Flavor: Crops like kale, spinach, and carrots actually convert starches into sugars when touched by light frost, resulting in a sweeter, crisper harvest than anything you can buy in mid-summer.
    3. Moisture Retention: Lower ambient temperatures and gentler sun mean soil stays moist longer, drastically reducing your watering efforts and utility costs.

If you are starting your garden journey now, your primary focus should shift toward hardy greens, root vegetables, and brassicas that thrive when the thermometer dips.

The Essential Beginner’s Playbook: What to Grow for Maximum ROI

To maximize your financial return and keep frustration low, start small and focus on foolproof, high-value crops. Here are the best performers for beginners looking to save money at the dinner table:

    1. Leafy Greens (Kale, Swiss Chard, and Leaf Lettuce)

    • Why they save money: Packaged organic salad greens are notoriously expensive for their weight, and they turn to liquid in the crisper drawer within days.
    • How to grow them: Leaf lettuce and chard can be harvested using the “cut-and-come-again” method—snip the outer leaves for your dinner salad, and the plant will keep producing fresh new leaves from the center for weeks. They grow exceptionally well in shallow containers, window boxes, or garden beds.

    2. Root Vegetables (Radishes, Carrots, and Beets)

    • Why they save money: Root crops are dense, filling, and store well for extended periods, reducing trips to the store.
    • How to grow them: Radishes are the ultimate beginner gratification crop, going from seed to harvest in as little as three to four weeks. Carrots and beets require loose, well-drained soil, but reward you with deep, earthy flavors completely unmatched by commercial varieties.

    3. Culinary Herbs (Basil, Cilantro, Parsley, and Thyme)

    • Why they save money: Buying tiny plastic clamshells of fresh herbs at the supermarket is one of the fastest ways to hemorrhage cash on groceries.
    • How to grow them: Herbs are remarkably resilient, take up very little space, and can be grown indoors on a sunny windowsill or outdoors in containers. A single rosemary or thyme plant will provide seasoning for years.

    4. Alliums (Green Onions and Garlic)

    • Why they save money: Green onions (scallions) are trivial to grow and can even be regenerated from kitchen scraps in a jar of water before planting them in soil. Garlic planted in the fall will quietly overwinter underground and reward you with a heavy harvest by early summer.

Setting Up On a Shoestring Budget

The gardening industry is filled with high-priced gadgets, chemical fertilizers, and designer raised-bed kits that can easily trick a beginner into spending more money than they save. To keep your project truly economical, adopt a resourceful, bootstrap mindset:

    • Skip the Expensive Containers: You don’t need decorative ceramic pots. Five-gallon plastic buckets from hardware stores (with drainage holes drilled into the bottom), old storage bins, heavy-duty shopping bags, and recycled nursery containers work just as well.
    • Make Your Own Soil Amendments: Premium store-bought potting soil adds up quickly. Build your own growing medium by combining local topsoil, coarse sand, and homemade compost. Save your kitchen vegetable scraps (coffee grounds, eggshells, apple cores, and carrot peels) to build a backyard compost pile. It turns free organic waste into black gold for your plants. The Seasonal Homestead
    • Prioritize Seeds Over Transplants: While buying pre-started baby plants at a garden center is convenient, a packet of seeds costs a fraction of the price and gives you dozens of plants for the price of one. Don\’t Waste the Crumbs

Protecting Your Investment: Simple Season Extension

As autumn weather transitions into chillier winter conditions, you can easily protect your crops and stretch your harvest window for months using low-cost materials:

    • Row Covers and Low Tunnels: Draping a lightweight frost blanket or spun-bond polyester fabric over wire hoops creates a microclimate that shields plants from biting winds and light freezes while letting in sunlight and rain.
    • Cold Frames: An old window pane or glass storm door laid over a simple wooden box frame creates a miniature greenhouse that traps solar heat, keeping cool-season greens alive and productive deep into the winter months.
    • Strategic Placement: Move movable containers close to the sun-warmed brick walls of your house. Walls absorb heat during the day and radiate it back out at night, protecting tender plants from sudden temperature drops.

    Cultivating Resilience

Starting a vegetable garden is about much more than trimming a few dollars off your grocery receipt. It is about decoupling your household from fragile supply chains, understanding the biological cycles of food production, and experiencing the profound satisfaction of sitting down to a meal that you nurtured from a tiny, unassuming seed with your own hands.

You do not need perfection, and you do not need perfectionist acreage. Pick two or three of your favorite vegetables, find a sunny patch of earth or a spare bucket, plant your first seeds, and take your first step toward food autonomy.

Setting up a patio garden gives you the greatest advantage in small-space gardening: weight capacity and volume. Unlike windowsills or balconies with strict weight limits, a patio can comfortably support heavy soil, deep containers, and large fruit-bearing plants.

Here is a targeted setup guide to build a high-yielding patio harvest:

    1. Top Crops & Container Pairings

    Heavy-Yield Vegetables

    • Determinate (Bush) Tomatoes: Varieties like Bush Early Girl or Celebrity grow 3–4 feet tall and produce a full, concentrated harvest with minimal staking.
      • Pot Needed: 10 to 15-gallon container (minimum 12–16 inches deep).
    • Bush Zucchini & Summer Squash: Compact varieties such as Astia or Eight Ball yield fresh, tender squash without spreading 6 feet wide across the floor.
      • Pot Needed: 10 to 15-gallon pot or smart fabric bag.
    • Peppers & Eggplants: Sweet bell peppers, jalapeños, or Italian eggplants thrive in medium-to-large containers.
      • Pot Needed: 5 to 7-gallon container per plant.

    Dwarf Patio Fruits

    • Dwarf Citrus Trees: An Improved Meyer Lemon or Calamondin Orange tree yields fresh citrus and fragrant blooms.
      • Pot Needed: 15 to 20-gallon pot (start young trees in 10-gallon, then size up).
    • Container Blueberries: Varieties like Top Hat or Peach Sorbet stay small (1–3 feet), feature vibrant fall leaves, and produce heavy berries when grown in acidic potting soil.
      • Pot Needed: 7 to 10-gallon container.
    • Dwarf Figs: Varieties like Little Miss Figgy handle root restriction well and yield rich fruits.
      • Pot Needed: 15 to 20-gallon container.

    2. Container Types Best Suited for Patios

    3. Patio Placement Strategy

To maximize growth, organize plants on the patio based on sunlight exposure:

[ BACK WALL / HIGH SUN ] -> Dwarf Lemon Tree, Bush Tomatoes (Tastiest with full sun, 6-8+ hours) [ MID-PATIO AREA ] -> Peppers, Bush Zucchini, Eggplant (Full sun) [ PARTIAL SHADE SHADOWS ] -> Leafy Greens, Radishes, Pot Herbs (3-5 hours sunlight)
    1. Sun Exposure: Place fruiting trees and tomatoes in the sunniest quadrant of your patio (aiming for 6–8 hours of direct light).
    2. Elevate Your Pots: Use pot risers or wheeled caddies under heavy 15-gallon pots. This prevents water from trapping under the container, preserves the patio floor, and allows easy movement.
    3. Soil Selection: Always fill containers with a lightweight, well-draining potting mix (never heavy topsoil or backyard dirt).

Here is the fundamental rule of container gardening: When growing in containers, you are creating a completely self-contained ecosystem. Plants in pots rely entirely on you for their water, nutrients, and root environment.

Focus on these five foundational principles to guarantee success on your patio:

    1. Soil & Drainage Rule (The #1 Mistake)

    • Never Use Backyard Dirt: Native garden soil or topsoil compacts inside pots, suffocating roots and trapping water like cement.
    • Use Quality Potting Mix: Always use a lightweight, commercial potting mix (often containing peat moss, coco coir, perlite, and vermiculite). It holds moisture while allowing oxygen to reach the roots.
    • Drainage is Non-Negotiable: Every pot must have drainage holes at the bottom. Without drainage, water sits, rots the roots, and kills the plant.

    2. Container Size Matters

    • Bigger is Safer: Smaller pots dry out within hours during summer heat and restrict root growth.
    • The Golden Rule for Patios:
      • 10 to 15+ Gallons: Bush tomatoes, zucchini, dwarf citrus, and dwarf figs.
      • 5 to 7 Gallons: Peppers, eggplants, and blueberries.
      • 2 to 3 Gallons: Salad greens and herbs.

    3. Master the “Finger Test” for Watering

    • The Common Pitfall: Overwatering kills just as many container plants as underwatering.
    • How to Check: Stick your finger 2 inches deep into the soil.
      • If it feels dry and cool, water thoroughly until water streams out of the bottom drainage holes.
      • If it feels damp or sticky, wait another day.
    • Consistent Watering: Check containers daily during mid-summer peak heat—large plants in pots may require daily watering.

    4. Feed Your Plants Regularly

    • Nutrients Wash Away: Every time you water a container until it drains, essential soil nutrients wash out with the water.
    • The Routine:
      1. Mix a slow-release granular fertilizer into your potting mix at planting time.
      2. Feed every 2 to 3 weeks during active growth using a balanced liquid organic fertilizer (such as fish emulsion or seaweed blend).

    5. Match Plants to Your Sunlight

    • Fruiting Crops (6–8+ Hours Direct Sun): Tomatoes, peppers, zucchini, cucumbers, and citrus require full sunlight to produce fruit and flower.
    • Leafy Crops (3–5 Hours Direct/Partial Sun): Lettuce, spinach, kale, and soft herbs (parsley, cilantro) can handle partial shade and morning sunlight.

    Quick Patio Checklist to Start

[ ] Potting Mix (Not topsoil or garden soil) [ ] Pots with bottom drainage holes (5 to 15-gallon sizes) [ ] High-sun location on the patio (6+ hours for vegetables/fruits) [ ] Liquid organic fertilizer [ ] Watering can or hose attachment

  25. #Journal of a wet ‘n windy Dutch AuDHD Pixy :pixy_party: (Saturday, 24/10/2026).

After managing about 7 hours of sleep in total, Koa and I woke up to “storm Austen”. It was very wet ‘n very windy. And Koa was very hesitant to go into the garden. There was so much rain, things were soaked. And, after being outside with Koa, seeing him more interested in the leaves than in doing his business… He went out a few times, I stayed inside for some of them. I just did my things, and hoped that Koa would be able to do his things.

I got to the couch and started my reply email to my dear friend. It became a bit of a babbling one, and when I was done, I quickly got dressed. I hoisted myself into the bright yellow rain suit, boots on, and then Koa and I braved the weather. He was rather spooked by all the wind and noises of things clashing around, but he did manage to wee and poop. So that was a good thing. When we got back, we were both wet and all. But, at least Koa had been able to do his business, and hopefully, I’d be able to relax for quite a while before Koa would want to drag me out into that weather again.

I started working on my blog post for today. I fixed myself some brekkie, and worked some more on the blog post. When it was done, I also worked on Sunday’s blog post as well. It felt good when both posts were done and scheduled. As Koa was still very relaxed, chewing happily on one of his rawhides, I started writing Thursday’s blog post. I was almost done when Koa had drunk quite a bit of water after the snacking. So, back into the yellow outfit and boots I went again!

I wanted a shorter round, as everything was so flooded with the everlasting rain, but Koa wanted his usual one. So, when we finally got back, we were soaked again. Well, the rain suit was dripping pretty good, and my boots were very humid, as part of the path next to the grassy field behind the house was flooded, and I didn't have my head lamp, so I didn't see it until we were wading through it... So, I peeled off all the wet layers, and tried to dry off the dude. 😊 He still tried to help me, but it seemed like Koa was starting to understand how I can dry him off best a wee bit better... We got back to the couch, where I finished writing Thursday's journal Toot. I uploaded it to Mastodon and my Journey journal app.

As I still felt OK enough to write, I started writing Friday's journal Toot as well. While I was writing that, I noticed I was losing some concentration. I first fixed some food for the dude, and then I started to abuse the AI a bit. First to generate a few "Sir Nibbles" images, then to help me with alt texts for them. After that, I browsed a bit on Mastodon, finally catching up with some of my notifications. A sweet friend had written a funny message, which gave me the idea for another image of Sir Nibbles. After that, I fixed some food, and wrote some more on the journal Toot, before Koa needed me to turn into the bright banana again. 😂 It turned out that it would be the last time for this night/morning, which was good for sure.

We got back from the walk, and I finished the journal Toot. I shared it on Masto and my journal app, and then got my laptop, so I could edit the journal post as well. When I was done, I switched some clothes and shoes, and I got on the treadmill. To my own surprise, it went rather well, and I managed to get to 2,2km in 30 minutes, most of which had been walked with a 1-2% incline. But yeah, it felt nice to manage a longer, inclined, walk, with a 4,4kmh average speed, instead of the 4 kmh I've been walking on ever since the herniated disc and hand surgery. I went upstairs after that, where I folded the laundry, and used the little vacuum to try and clean it a bit more. Someone from the building coop is coming this Monday morning, to check things out due to the mouse situation. Koa barked once, while I was upstairs. While I was vacuuming, I didn't notice any new droppings. And I had not heard the noise anymore. Still, it was good to have someone look at it soon.

I went back downstairs, cleaned up the laundry, washed up and changed clothes. After that, Koa and I had our first "as good as dry" walkies of the day. When we got back, Koa got some food, and I tried to relax with some couch and telly time. The next few hours, I tried to sweep the floors, which gathered quite a bit of hair. We tried to relax a bit as well. I wanted to walk a short round before fixing Koa's last meal before bed time, but Koa had a different plan, and I was glad when we got back home again. I fixed Koa's meal, and started preparing for bedtime. I got myself some food as well. When Koa and I had filled our bellies, and watched some telly, we went in the garden before retreating to the bedroom.

Koa and I dozed off a bit, and after a potty break, we managed to get about 7¼ hours of sleep in total. When we got up, storm Boelo was raging wildly. We would be enjoying some more "nice weather" tonight, with an extra hour, due to daylight saving ending...

Thanks to all for your kindness and support during my "journey through daily life" :bear_love: I really appreciate it :bear_hugs: as it helps me to keep going on bad/harder days! :bear_nuzzle:

  26. The Diggings campground on the Turon River

In this post: The peace and the pain of camping.

This is the blog of Mark Wordsworm, the travelling worm. I’m a 40-year-old bookmark (give or take a few years) and I proudly boast my own Hallmark serial number, 95 HBM 80-1. You’ll probably want to read all about me and my Travelling Companion (the TC).

    Today’s travel notes

The TC, bless her cotton socks, has a new favourite place to camp. It’s The Diggings campground in New South Wales, Australia. It’s beautiful and peaceful, so she claims, tucked away between the hills, right on the bank of the Turon River. “Peaceful?” I retort. “Hah, read on!”

“Everything in Australia is trying to kill you.” That’s what they say. Here come the 5 hazards that the TC encountered on this short two-day trip. Plus a bonus hazard!

    The book I’m in

Gone for Good by Harlan Coben. A good fast read full of twists and turns. Perfect for bookworms like yours truly, who prefer their hazards presented between the covers of a book.

    Travel tips

Get out there and enjoy life. It might be shorter than you think! (I’m voicing the TC here.)

    The photos

Ah, camping. This worm doesn’t know why the TC does it!

    https://youtu.be/MpUu2zs0CJM

Hazard 1: Aggressive ants. At the slightest provocation, they’ll barrel out of their nest on the ground, climb up your legs as far as possible, and nip like fire pokers. Also, it’s important to point out that these particular ants had built their nest right across the doorway of the dunny. (Australian terminology: a dunny is a toilet, especially a long-drop like the ones you get at campgrounds, if you’re lucky to get any at all.) So, just when you’re in a hurry, there’s a hazard in your way.

The peace. A smooth green sward of grass, surrounded by tree-covered hills from which birds sound their music:

Kangaroos abound, bounding around, with several little joeys both in and out of the pouch. Crimson Rosellas feed on the grass seeds, adding their rich reds and blues to the scene:

Hazard 2: Being chased by a kangaroo. Those roos may look cute and cuddly. But… The TC stopped for a moment to listen to some birds. Suddenly a peremptory bark sounded from higher up the hill. She looked up to see a big male kangaroo loping towards her. Not fast, but purposefully. With its chest and arms all muscly and strong. She took the wiser course and walked away. The male stopped near his clutch of females and joeys to watch the TC retreat. She does confess that her heart bumped painfully for a while.

Hazard 3: Aggressive birds. Not all birds are as peace-loving as the Crimson Rosellas in the previous photo. Earlier in this trip, before getting to the campground, an Australian Magpie did an uncomfortably close fly-by. Once again, the TC had stopped to watch some birds, though not the magpie. Suddenly, she heard and felt a loud clap just next to her head. Just a warning pass, no contact. The TC looked up to see a magpie fly off, land on a nearby branch, then turn round and ready itself for another go. On this occasion too, the TC took the wiser course, with her umbrella raised above her head in defence.

More peace. The early morning sun glows behind a wall of mist:

Hazard 4: Deep mineshafts. Beware where you tread, in the misty eery light. Deep mine shafts are scattered at random, remaining from the days of gold mining in the area. The shafts within the campground are fenced off, but a dreadful drop lies in wait for the unwary who wander off the beaten path:

Yet more peace. The Turon River flows past the campground, reflecting sky and trees, home to ducks, kingfishers, and other wildlife:

Hazard 5: River and terrain. You need a four-wheel-drive vehicle to get to The Diggings campground. Depending which route you take, there’s one river crossing and a steep, dry-weather-only descent on a dirt track, or at least four river crossings. Beware the river rising. It can be fast-flowing and deep.

And the promised bonus hazard: In the video at the start of this post, the TC mentioned a spider in the dunny. Yes, it was a redback. A good one to avoid!

On this trip, yours truly stayed safely tucked in a book. Hence, no photos of me in this post. My apologies, dear reader, I know you miss my noble physiognomy.

    That’s all for today, folks.

  27. CW: satire of terfism, defacation
Gyns tell me I'm not crazy here. No one I've told about this so far has sympathized with me, but I know radblr is more reasonable than the outside world.
I'm really afraid of moids going into the sewer and eating my shit and drinking my urine. Everyone makes fun of me for this and tells me why I should care when it's bodily waste anyways, but it's my bodily waste and I don't want moids putting it in their mouth.
We can all agree that's perfectly reasonable right? Right? We all know how moids can be about women and we all know that they actually do this. So what is the problem if I do it first?
I've been reading articles about it and unless you have parasites it's actually not that bad for you and can actually help you absorb nutrients you may have missed before. The only problem is if you ONLY eat and drink your own piss and shit and you get nutrient defeciencies.
Everyone I've told about this seems completely disgusted by it and I'm at my wits end. I just want my FEMALE piss and shit to stay pure of moid saliva. Why are women treated like this for protecting ourselves?
Why is it so wrong when I do it but not when MEN do it?

    Sisters, I need your counsel.
I haven't flushed in four days and I need advice.
I know this sounds extreme but I have my reasons. There's been documentation—studies, personal accounts, patterns—that moids and TRA activists have established colonies in the sewer systems. They subsist on what we discard. Every time you flush, you're feeding them. You're giving them sustenance, allowing them to maintain their presence in the infrastructure that connects us all.
My toilet is reaching a critical point. I can smell it. I know I need to do something but I can't bring myself to push that lever. It feels like... surrender. Like contamination.

can i be a political lesbian if im super straight? i have never experienced any attraction to women and i find the thought of the female body disgusting. in fact i hate my own body and wish i could be a man. but then id be gay. i have dated men for like 15+ years and after spending so long dating men and being mistreated i feel like i want to claim political lesbianism. maybe i could be a man and force myself to be straight and claim political lesbianism. could this maybe work for me? what kinds of activism should i get involved in to become a political lesbian?

heres a thing that happened to some friends of mine. was walking down the street talking about the bears game and a bus pulled up and a bunch of white women with short hair and bad plastic surgery came out with baseball bats. they all had shirts that sayed 'down with trans'. i(22 afab wombynly wombyn) was able to hold them off while my friend(19 amab mynly myn) ran away. bareley escaped

aita for accidentally harrassing an afab?
was at the grocery store and had to used the restroom. damn urinary leash amirite? i was
so terrified of seeing an transexual but had no choice becuz i(35 wombynly afab) had to pee.as i was washing
mine hands a person came in. i could tell by their jawline and cheekbones that they were
obviously an amab. so i stood in the door and made them pull down their pandts. and they
said no so they started walking away but i kept following them demanding to see what was
in his pants. by the time we reached the checkout it was really statring to cause quite a
scene which was very triggering to my sex based oppression. i followed him out to his car
and he turned and looked at me and said "dude im a butch stop being wierd" in a perfect
    femininely wombynly afab voice. aita?

hi yall. i was amab and transitioned 5 years ago. just a normal straight girl, right? couple of months ago i figured i would try reclaiming my masculinity. puicked up some boxers and cargo shorts. instand raging boaner. now i cant ger off without thinking of hot bear for bear frotting. am i still trurrans?

How do you feel about male exclusive radical misandrists? yeah i was born a man and i hate it this cock tortures me evry minute of my existence if i even think about being a man i break down. And due to my unfortunate attraction to men, i experience sex based oppression due to being a bottom. i sometimes wish i could transision and be a political lesbian but then i would just be a male invading women's spaces. so i coined a term to describe me: male exclusive radical misandrist. because if i am going to be oppressed for being a male i want to be the one opressing me. its basic bodily autonomy. only we can oppress ourselves. #moids dni #foids dni #kill all men #kill all women #oppress yourself responsibly #liberate the noone #righttooppress

harrassing random trans women will not brign the downfall of gender. indiviual action will never bring any revolution. what we need is collective action. so stop trying to do anything about gender until the vanguard party has established a positon for the overthrow of gender. if you disagree your just a lifestylist reactionary.
    __________________________________________________________________________________________
and to my immune system: if you want to drown yourself in snot and mucuous that's your right but would you kindly do me a favor and LEAVE ME THE FUCK OUT OF IT.

and to my subconscious mind: need i remind you that your job responsibilities cover automated systems like breathing and circulation, not fucking keeping me awake all fucking night? kindly focus on attending to your job description instead of insane extracuriculars? I need you to remember that we are a team here and your actions affect everyone.

    dear James in engineering,
I cant believe you still haven't solved the problems with the power couplings. I know this may be hard to understand but you need to turn the set screws to the OFF position to turn OFF the flow restrictors and you need to turn the set screws to the ON position to ENABLE the flow restrictors. Kindly, learn to do your damn job.

    dear administration,
I appreciate all of your hard work in finding staff in these difficult times but I need clarification on one thing: where do you find all of these morons? You have sent us five new employees in the last two weeks and only one of them knew what a philips head was. We cannot be spending what little time we are given to train new employees in basic skills. Might i recommend hiring people who demonstrate technical proficiency instead of your fuckup nephew?

heres something i actually sent my local news station:
    Hello Andrea,
I apologize if this is not your department but I cannot find a contact for the meteorology department. My complaint is quite simple: I ask that weather forecasters please refrain from inserting their personal judgements and opinions into the broadcasting. I get that some people might appreciate warmer weather but this opinion is not universal and many of us find it quite shocking to see 80 degree highs in late october described as "nice", "mild", or "fair". If you would like to hear my opinion on the matter, personally I find this heat oppressive as I am someone who spends a good deal of time outside engaged in hard physical activity. In fact, I would go so far as to say that if you enjoy this weather you might consider relocating to an environment with a more suitable climate, such as the fucking sahara desert. And frankly, the Sahara might be an improvement: at least I could manage the heat in a dry climate.
Thank you for listening to my rant and have a blessed day,
    Foob
P.S. Anything you could do to keep the temperatures in the mid 50s would be greatly appreciated on my end.

    dear Administration,
While I appreciate that finding competent staff is difficult sometimes and that you have been able to find teaching staff with high levels of technical proficiency, several of your staff have been lacking in professionalism and pedagogy. I have actually had teachers cancel class with 5 minutes notice, on multiple occassions, so much so that it in fact became a recurring pattern with them. As if that wasnt bad enough, these are often the same teachers who's prefered teaching style seems to be blindly reading off their powerpoint without so much as looking at the class, much less checking for understanding. I ask that in the future you please hire teachers who actually show up to class and actually know how to teach.
    Best regards,
    A concerned student
ps. and dont even get me started with your online offerings. in a live classroom setting, a student can at least raise their hand and steer an incompetent teacher. but your online classes are just underpaid staff reading off thier lecture notes with no furter explanation beyond basic concepts. I might as well watch a youtube video, that would be a better value. For $1000 dollars a class, this is a total ripoff and perhaps even a full on scam. fuck you.

Whoever is in charge of hiring at this place is a real piece of work. I get that there are others who may have better qualifications but to interview a candidate and not even send a rejection email, much less useful feedback, demostrates a level of profesionalism that would embarrass a tavern wench. These institutions, and society as a whole, would benefit greatly from giving people a fighting fucking chance.

    Dear hiring manager,
I have an important formal inquiry(injury): on your website you have multiple listings for so called entry level positions with a minimum qualification of 5 years of experience. This leaves me wondering how one is supposed to get 5 years of experience if all of the so called entry level positions require 5 years of experience. This is so prevasive accross your job listings that I suspect I might have a decent case with the Equal Opportunity Employment Commission, considering that these requirements absolutely have a discriminatory impact against people who are new to the job market. So I guess my question is this: do you actually hire human beings or only bots?
Also, what the fuck are you smoking? This is a job which entails mostly filing sales reports, which is not exactly a rare or difficult skill. Stop acting like corporate bureaucracy is a skilled trade: it isn't.

    Dear hr,
It has come to my attention that the tone of my recent emails is "problematic and unprofessional". While I can appreciate that others may have trouble with the self awareness necessary to address issues raised in good faith, I must suggest that my coworkers stop being such a bunch of little bitches.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.

    hello hr representative,
I am writing to inform you of several concerns i have with this companies hr department. While I do appreciate the structure whereby advancement depends on undying loyalty to the establishment and whereby power is exercised both for its own sake and to keep underlings in check, I must say that you lack the ability to be gangsta unless you have the full backing of the entire institution. Kindly, if you have a beef with me, settle it like grown men instead of hiding behind your lackeys. Also, you claim to have meaningful power over me but we both know that you would be nothing without the backing of your institution. Once again, lets drop the bullshit and settle this.
    Best regards,
    Mr. Dick Head

     Have

you owned a month-end close and an annual audit relationship for a fund

or investment vehicle, without a supervisor above you?

I ride a bicycle everywhere and if i cant get there on a bike i simply ride there anyway. i ride in the middle of the road, often dodging traffic in the oncoming lane. Its like dancing its all about your footwork, timing and spacing. I know this sounds dangerous but you need to know something about me: dick does not fuck up. If there is a collision it is your fucking fault for being in my fucking way. Dont you know pedestrians have the right of way?

    Do

you have five or more years of accounting experience, including fund or

investment-vehicle accounting (private credit, debt fund, or real

    estate fund)?

Yeah ive been riding my bike for like 8 years now at this point and let me tell you i have put a lot of work into it. every goddamned time i go out to ride it something needs adjusting, be it the brake cables, shifter cable, tire pressure, or seat position. and thats just the tip of the iceberg. i have replaced the drivetrain 5 seperate times including completely reengineering it at least twice. and if theres even a bit of rain in the forecast i have to be prepared to replace everything cuz nothing is designed to handle a bit of moisture much less the kind of loamy mud i subject it to.

This is an independent contractor (1099) engagement on a fixed monthly retainer, roughly 30 hours in a typical month. Does that structure work for you?

the only structure that works for me is completely egalitarian horizontal structures. anything else concentrates power that will eventually be abused. and the structure of most corporations, including yours, more closely resembles monarchal fuedalism than any form of democracy, much less free association. and to be frank monarchal fuedalism would be a fucking improvement., at least under monarchal feudalism i have the dignity of providing for my own and my community's survival by contributing to the grain store instead of relying on opaque and inhuman institutions for the "privilege" of keeping a roof over my head. fuck you.

What monthly retainer would you propose for the scope described in the posting?

i aint paying you no goddamn monthly fee for the "privilege" of selling you my labor. fuck you.
