Untreated sewage contaminates #SanJuanRiver as #floodwaters threaten public health

"Untreated sewage has entered the flooded San Juan River, #NavajoNation officials said Saturday, warning that contamination could remain long after the water recedes.

" 'The water in the river right now is contaminated,' Navajo Nation Police Deputy Chief Donnie Kee said during an evening debrief in Shiprock. 'Sewage plants in #BloomfieldNM, #FarmingtonNM, and #ShiprockNM have been impacted and sewage has been released into the water.”

"Kee advised residents to stay out of the river and wash thoroughly if they came into contact with the water."

"The Navajo Nation Police Department warned of rising water in the #SanJuanRiver in #Utah this morning at 5 a.m., as catastrophic flooding continues with helicopter evacuations on the Navajo Nation and far reaching flooding in New Mexico.

"New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham said on Saturday that there were hundreds of water rescues between Bloomfield on the Navajo Nation, and #FarmingtonNM.

"In #RockPointAZ, on the Navajo Nation, the tribe's all terrain vehicle reached stranded #Dine' families waiting for evacuation with food and water, but the need continues, especially for food for
livestock.

"Family members in Rock Point said today that Dine' are still stranded and need food, water and blankets. They need heavy duty trucks to reach isolated family members.

"Dine' on #BlackMesa in #Arizona struggle to reach their homes as dirt roads are washed away, and turned to seas of mud.

#NavajoTimes reported from #DennehotsoAZ on the Navajo Nation on Friday.

"Among the residents affected is Phyllis Yazzie, 74, who slept in her car after floodwater reached her home. Mary Lou Johnson, 102, was rescued by raft and transported by helicopter to the chapter house as flooding forced families from their homes."
