#Navajos and #Hopis Formally Oppose Pumped Storage Proposal Targeting #BlackMesa
Flagstaff, AZ - " #TóNizhóníÁní, #Diné Citizens Against Ruining our Environment (#DinéCARE), #BlackMesaTrust and the @centerforbiodiv have filed motions to intervene urging the
Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to deny the preliminary permit application for the #Chilchinbeto Pumped Storage project southeast of #Kayenta on the Navajo Nation" 'This wildly unrealistic project would only add to decades of harm from coal mining to Black Mesa’s people, land and aquifers,' said Nicole Horseherder, executive director of Tó Nizhóní Ání. 'Asking for federal approval when the application is riddled with incomplete, misleading and infeasible information is the height of arrogance. It tells us all we need to know.'
"The proposed #ChilchinbetoPumpedStorage project would construct two reservoirs, containing 10,000 acre-feet each of water, one on the rim of Black Mesa and the other 1,500 feet below in the valley. The water to fill the reservoirs would come from either the aquifer deep beneath Black Mesa or the San Juan River, according to the application submitted by the company Nature and People First. After the initial 10,000 acre-feet to fill the reservoirs, the project would require withdrawing an estimated 2,500 acre-feet every year to keep them full.
" 'Like coal mining before, this proposal would require rural communities to sacrifice more land and water so that electricity and profits can be exported to faraway cities,' said Robyn Jackson, executive director of Diné C.A.R.E. 'This isn’t something we want or need, and it’s not a history we’ll tolerate repeating.'
"The groups’ motion cites problems relating to industrializing Black Mesa and its #groundwater, including impacts to local communities and families, depletion of rivers, groundwater, and springs, and impacts to wildlife and their habitat. It cites the applicants’ failure to consult with the #HopiTribe, failure to consider water use in the context of regional drying, and their mischaracterization of support from the #NavajoNation’s Resources and Development Committee. It details incomplete, misleading, and infeasible aspects of the proposed project and calls for affected communities to participate in any further study development."

#GallupNM #datacenter water deal draws #Navajo concerns
By Donovan Quintero | May 14, 2026
"A proposed data center on Gallup’s eastern industrial edge has raised questions about water, jobs, public notice and whether the project could affect the Navajo-Gallup Water Supply Project.
"The Gallup City Council is considering whether to extend a long-term reclaimed water option tied to #TeraplexDataCentersLLC, a Virginia limited liability company identified in city documents as seeking to develop industrial and commercial uses, including a data center, on roughly 330 acres in Gallup.
"Public materials describe Teraplex as a modular data center and power infrastructure company focused on #AI computing, integrated power systems and factory-built infrastructure. Publicly available company materials do not clearly identify completed or operating data center campuses owned by Teraplex."

Gallup data center proposal raises water, jobs and notice concerns
Marcus Williams, 5/17/2026
"A 330-acre #GallupTradeport data center could send nearly 110 million gallons of #wastewater a year into a water-stressed region already waiting on #NavajoGallup deliveries.
"Gallup City Council put off action April 29 on a wastewater deal tied to a proposed 330-acre data center in the Gallup Tradeport, and the scale alone sharpened the stakes: nearly 110 million gallons of wastewater a year could be routed to the project if the agreement advances.
"That number is now colliding with a much larger question in McKinley County and across the Eastern Navajo Nation, who bears the risk if a private technology campus moves ahead in a region where water is already scarce. At a May 14 discussion, speakers raised concerns about water use, public notice and whether the project could affect the Navajo-Gallup Water Supply Project, the long-delayed system meant to carry municipal and industrial water from the #SanJuanRiver to Gallup, the eastern #NavajoNation and the southwestern #JicarillaApache Nation."

#NavajoNation Declares #DroughtEmergency as President #BuuNygren Signs Order
by Levi Rickert June 11, 2026
Excerpt: "Commission members advanced the declaration after reviewing worsening #drought conditions across the region and considering recent emergency actions taken by #Arizona and #NewMexico. State officials have pointed to persistent drought, below-average precipitation, elevated #wildfire risks, and growing impacts on #WaterResources and agriculture.
"The commission also reviewed U.S. Drought Monitor data showing that Arizona experienced its hottest and driest January-through-March period on record in 2026, with extreme drought persisting across portions of #Navajo, #Apache, and #Coconino counties.
"To address the crisis, the declaration recommends that the Division of Natural Resources move forward with drought mitigation infrastructure projects, including repairs to #windmills and improvements to livestock #WaterStorage systems.
"The commission also recommended allocating $6,553,730 from the Agricultural Infrastructure Fund to support drought mitigation efforts, including windmill repairs and related water infrastructure improvements.
"In addition, Navajo Nation chapters are encouraged to activate local emergency mitigation plans and coordinate with Administrative Service Centers, the Division of Community Development, the Department of Emergency Management, and other entities to strengthen preparedness and response efforts."

#Navajos Warn of Secretive Tribal Government Reform
Dine' Grassroots coalition, "spoke of the #bribes, backdoor deals and tribal government #corruption involved in the tribe's deals with #EnergyCompanies."
By #BrendaNorrell, #CensoredNews, Jan. 27, 2026
"Navajos warned of a secretive Navajo government reform that is underway that would change #Diné life, and silence the voices of the people for generations to come.
"#ChiliYazzie, former #Shiprock Council Delegate and Chapter President, said proposing the government reform as a 'yes or no' question for the Dine' voters on the ballot in 2026 is 'an abuse of our people.' "

NOW: Live #Diné People’s Press Conference on #NavajoGovernment Concerns
Tó Nizhóní Ání
By #ChiliYazzie, #CensoredNews
Contact: [email protected]
"A group of grassroots organizations convened in Dec 2025 to discuss concerns related to the #NavajoNation, these concerns have been formulated into position statements to be presented to the Navajo Nation leadership including the Navajo Nation Council and the Office of the President and Vice President. These positions will be presented at the Press Conference to be held in front of the Navajo Nation Council Chambers on January 27, 2026, at 9 am.
- The proposal to reform the Navajo government drafted by the Office of Navajo Government Development has been analyzed and is found to be replete with foundational issues, we are recommending that the proposal not be presented to the Navajo people as a referendum initiative as proposed by the ONGD
- The proposal by the #Trump administration to expedite natural resources #extraction with little or no #environmental review is a critical concern
- The depletion of the #waters of Navajo lands and the continued lost of water rights must be consciously and deliberately addressed by our Navajo Nation leadership
- The uninhibited incursion by the federal Immigration and Custom Enforcement agency on Indian lands and arrest and abuse of #NativeAmerican citizens is greatly concerning
Diné Grassroots Coalition is a coalition comprised of Diné community members concerned about the state of the Navajo Nation."

#ICE Terrorizing #Navajo, #Yaqui and #Shawnee in #Arizona and #Oklahoma
By #BrendaNorrell, #CensoredNews , Jan. 16, 2026
"ICE is terrorizing #NativeAmericans. A Navajo on his way to work in the #Phoenix Valley was grabbed by ICE on Monday. A #PascuaYaqui tribal member grabbed near #TohonoOodham's San Xavier District, bordering Tucson, reveals how federal agents are terrorizing U.S. citizens and migrants in detention. In Oklahoma, Absentee Shawnee are now being harassed and detained by ICE agents.
"Peter Yazzie, #Dine', was on his way to work in Peoria, in the Phoenix Valley, at 4 a.m., on Monday, when ICE grabbed him, ignoring his tribal ID and the fact that he is a U.S. citizen, reports Arlyssa D. Becenti, at the Arizona Republic.
"Peter Yazzie told ICE agents where they could locate his Certificate of Indian Blood, birth certificate and other documents proving that he was both a #USCitizen and #NativeAmerican. It made no difference. They aggressively placed him in the back of their vehicle and drove away early the morning of Monday, Jan. 12.'
"Yazzie was unaware that ICE was expanding operations throughout Phoenix and surrounding cities. Parked at a QT gas station between Peoria and Sun City near his job site, his morning began as usual, waking at 4 a.m. for his 5 a.m. shift."
