The road in front of my house is a mess this morning. It’s a dirt-and-gravel stretch, and after last night’s rain it has fully committed to being a muddy road. Luckily, I don’t need to go anywhere. My wife does, though, which means she’ll track mud up the driveway and into the garage when she gets back.

It’s funny how a hard rain will wash the driveway clean but turn the road into a mud pit — so if we do have to go somewhere, we end up tracking that same mud right back up the driveway again. A perfect little loop of annoyance. Ugh.

On the bright side, I don’t have to water the grass today, and the whole yard got a good soaking. The downside is that it might interfere with my morning walk… assuming I even decide to go. Right now, a nap is sounding pretty competitive.

If I put Charlie on his leash, we could avoid the mud entirely by staying on the grass until we reach the paved main road — it’s only about a hundred meters. From there, we could walk into town on pavement the whole way. Paved roads and swimming pools… no movie stars, though. A little Beverly Hillbillies humor for the morning.

Honestly, if we hadn’t gotten rain, I’d probably be complaining about that, so there’s no winning. Or I could just flip the mood and look at it positively — dancing in the rain or basking in the sunshine, whichever fits. The temperature is cool this morning, so that’s a plus.

I love that my toughest decision today is whether to go for a walk or not.

Mudpie 1.0.0 for Android is out.

Mudpie is a free, accessibility-first Android and Mac OS MUD client built for TalkBack and physical-keyboard users from the ground up.
1.0.0 is the biggest release yet:

Classes now work everywhere: the on/off toggle you use for triggers now covers aliases, Lua scripts, key bindings, and quick action buttons too. Flip one switch, silence a whole feature set.
Aliases can do everything triggers can: speak text, play sounds, send notifications, toggle classes, not just expand text anymore.
New quick action bar: configurable buttons above the input for sending commands, speaking text, or playing sounds without a physical keyboard, including expandable button groups.
The Lua script editor got a screen-reader-focused overhaul: line-by-line browsing, a code outline for jumping to functions, go-to-line, and search with match highlighting.
World import can update an existing world in place instead of always duplicating it.
Per-world sound volume, repeat-last-command on blank input, and a setting to keep the keyboard open after sending for braille-keyboard users.
Miriani preset triggers are now fully editable and protected from being overwritten on re-sync.
A slimmer status/input bar frees up screen space, split view panes are fully independent, and a long list of performance work and bug fixes (memory leak, orphaned files on world delete, crash on malformed server output, and more).

i was so surprised and delighted to see BBSes, FidoNet, and MUDs/MUCKs get mentions in the anthropomorphic (furry) culture history documentary The Fandom (2020).

i always knew there was significant overlap between furry culture and networked computing, but i had never fully made the connection. it's so nice to see a real, non-corporate, grassroots culture grown through informal othernetworks. no wonder masto is so furry-rich!

On tonight's Countryfile there was a segment where Matt joined a couple of people surveying a mud flat.

They didn't sink very deep, but it's always a delight to see mud flats and muddy wellies on TV.

In all honesty I was a bit jealous. I don't have mud flats anywhere remotely nearby, and I'd love to go 'survey' one.

This week, with a bit of time to myself, I have been overcome with #wanderlust

On Monday I explored open countryside, sinking into a muddy drainage ditch between fields and wading navel-deep in a little river.

Hrm. Down in the soggy trench chiselling off wrongful concrete while trying to keep the muck from stealing my boots.

My box of screws got wet and fell apart. I guess that's why the ones in plastic boxes cost more.

Also not liking what I find under the concrete. Rotten wood. This is why you never put concrete against wood. Its exactly as that old house surveyor said: Wrongful renovation is the primary cause of old house death. Had they used lime mortar like the original builders, the moisture could've left instead.

A few spots are really bad but luckily not the entire log. Need to get more lime soon.

Also evicting the ants that are living under there. There's even more ant nests this year than last and it was already crazy.

The aftermath: Our poor old cement mixer got blown over and then even rolled over its back. And that's not a flimsy Scheppach machine either.

Luckily the trees all held, I was a little worried as it came from an unusual direction.

The rainfall was crazy and got stuck here and went on for hours. Everything is flooded, including the garbarn floor and my dig site.

I've packed up as it will need to drain and dry. Didn't get nearly as far as planned today :-(

Oh, the guy who wrecked his car on the open manhole that the rain flushed out came by with a towing truck and hauled his car off our yard this morning. Had a peek under there. Hit the frame in two places and the rear suspension is probably torn out. I guess that is it for his old Touareg.

I've been spending free time porting (not emulating) the classic BBS adventure game MajorMUD :tm: to modern platforms using Python+SQLite.

Completely reverse engineered from the original game data, this world includes:

26,694 unique rooms
1,101 monsters
1,379 spells
383 unique weapons
532 armor items
178 shops
19 special abilities
15 classes
13 races
23 quest lines
and more!

It also uses SSH instead of telnet, because duh.
