Watching this video on making a "dumb device" into a smart device without calling a company, without the need for a proprietary app, etc.
It's a lot of work, but this feels like just the kind of thing that makes the world a better place.

#Matter is dead. Long live #Zigbee and #Zwave for #HomeAutomation #HomeAssistant #Homelab!
I gave Matter years of my live, sweat equity and precious real money. No more. This article tells it. I made the decision a couple days ago to dump my devices that require Matter. The battery issues, network fragmentation, latency, … it is all as the article says. Meanwhile, my Zigbee network has scaled nicely, batteries lasting up to 2 years, stable and responsive.

Moved the 2nd doorbell setup temporarily so I could use a Shelly to control it. Just wish I could direct the Shelly to AC 26V. Anyways smaller than the other setup I did so will likely print a small enclosure in white and in ASA to hide it all.
All doorbells now are Reolink ones :)

It’s getting to be an annual thing where I rebuild the automation that controls my pool equipment. I’ve started calling it the “swamp castle pool controller.”
- the first one sank into the swamp
- the second one sank into the swamp
- the third one burned down, then sank into the swamp
- but the fourth one!
And I tease my adult sons: “some day, lad” sweeping my hands toward the table of soldering odds and ends, “this will all be yours!”
You might ask “Paco, where’s the blog post describing all this stuff?” And I would reply “let me get one that lasts more than one season and I’ll blog about it!” 😛

Anyone out there having problems with #alexa and #ikea #tradfri smart bulbs recently?
Our bulbs are connected to a Tradfri hub, and Alexa has the "Ikea Home smart 1" skill. The Tradfri hub is also integrated with our #homeassistant server.
Any lighting voice command issued via Alexa are taking a minute or more to take effect since about a week ago, but commands issued via the Ikea Home Smart 1 app (on iPhone), or Home Assistant, take effect immediately.

Did you know there was a system called Red Box for the BBC Micro that enabled you to turn home appliances off and on using your computer? So, basically, an early version of HomeKit, etc.
In 1986.

Rooted the Dreame X40 Ultra to run Valetudo. 100% local control, zero cloud tethering, and integrated directly into Home Assistant. Amazing work to all in the Valetudo community.
Striking to realise this vacuum has more compute than the Cray supercomputer souviner on my desk.

@happyborg IKEA and Sonoff are always good options. There are also a variety of plugs that you can flash with #Tasmota firmware (I have a number myself) but it can be a bit of a lottery to find those that you can flash OTA. https://templates.blakadder.com/

CW: Home Automation/Mesh Network Help
I'm trying to get my friend started with a smart home and I'm really struggling with what to recommend for a mesh network. On the one hand Zigbee seems to be incredibly mature and reliable, but it requires a hub. On the other hand, Thread seems nice because it only needs border routers which can be distributed, but the devices are more expensive and seem to be less reliable.
I really want to keep to Matter as much as possible because I love the multi-admin mode, so I'm torn. My friend is getting into Home Assistant, but his husband really likes using their Google Home speakers, so I want to be able to put devices into both. Basically, my options are:
1) Get Matter over Thread devices.
2) Get a Zigbee hub that supports Matter.
3) Use Home Assistant as a Zigbee hub and use Matterbridge.I'd love some thoughts or feedback if anyone has any, or maybe some options I missed. :soft_reach:
