To my surprise spontaneous research into online newspaper archives lets me conclude that Robert #Goddard was pretty popular in German newspapers from 1919 to 1941: his achievements and plans were often misrepresented but he was usually treated on a par with other famous rocket pioneers, especially Hermann Oberth.

I want you to prevent the permanent destruction of the Goddard Information and Collaboration Center at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, one of the most important scientific research repositories in the world.

Founded in 1959, the Goddard library holds roughly 100,000 volumes and has served as a vital research hub for scientists, engineers, and the public. This Republican Administration has moved to permanently close this institution, with many of its irreplaceable materials — including earth science research, climate data, and the documented history of American space exploration — expected to be discarded under federal property disposal rules. Much of this material has never been digitized and cannot be recovered once lost.

The alleged cost savings amount to $10 million per year — a rounding error in the federal budget

Sen. Chris Van Hollen is fighting to preserve this institution.

Join him in demanding that NASA comply with the 2026 budget directives regarding preservation of the Goddard Space Flight Center Library. The destruction of irreplaceable scientific and historical records is not a cost-cutting measure — it is a loss that cannot be undone. NASA library closure in Maryland the latest in Trump cuts to space research

The Trump administration will close NASA’s largest research library, located at the Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, this week.

The library houses tens of thousands of books and documents, including journals and old articles that have not been digitized, according to The New York Times, which first reported on the facility’s Friday closure.

In-person library services were already paused, according to the Goddard Engineers, Scientists and Technicians Association, or GESTA, the union for employees at the facility. As of Dec. 9, employees were no longer allowed to check out books.

The union said in an update on its blog that library staff are working on a 60-day review of the collection and have been reportedly been given permission to save the most rare 10%-15% of it, with the remainder to be picked up by the General Services Administration. According to The Times, the federal government will store some of the collection in warehouses, and trash the rest.

The union wrote that employees were told that physical collaboration spaces in the library would close as of Jan. 2, and some “limited” digital subscriptions will remain.

NASA officials did not immediately respond to a request for comment Thursday.

Shuttering the library is just the latest of sudden building closures at the Goddard campus, according to GESTA. The union has detailed multiple laboratory and office building closures, and said some employees and contractors were called in to help vacate buildings during the government shutdown.

Goddard is “NASA’s premiere space flight complex and home to the nation’s largest organization of scientists, engineers, and technologists who build spacecraft, instruments, and new technology to study Earth, the Sun, our solar system, and the universe,” according to its website.

The “unplanned” and “hasty” moves will “result in the loss of millions of dollars in taxpayer-funded laboratory facilities, including sophisticated and high-value equipment that will be difficult, if not impossible, to replace,” union officials wrote.

J'ai eu la chance de le visiter il y a quelques années (mon frère y est chercheur depuis plus de 10 ans... et pour le moment toujours en poste) : "voir" la recherche spatiale à l'œuvre, les "salles blanches" parmi les plus grandes au monde, des centrifugeuses monumentales, les maquettes à taille réelle servant à "répéter" les manipulations du robot Curiosity avant d'envoyer les codes sur Mars... ouf !
Quels que soient les résultats politiques ce soir, des dégâts immenses ont déjà été faits aux milieux de la recherche...

🇬🇧 The Goddard Space Flight Center, that iconic place of space research, has not been spared by the turmoil currently affecting scientific circles in the United States. I had the chance to visit it a few years ago (my brother has been a researcher there for over 10 years... and still working there): “seeing” space research at work, some of the largest “clean rooms” in the world, monumental centrifuges, life-size models used to “rehearse” the Curiosity robot's maneuvers before sending the codes to Mars... phew!
Whatever the political results tonight, immense damage has already been done to the research community...
