  3. I got the Thomas Cook "Egypt, the Nile and Palestine - Season 1928-1929" (and it was not cheap), but the section on Nile paddle steamers would immediately start re-reading the Agatha Christies.

The issue now is how to scan a book that is both very very stiff and utterly friable.

  4. Facial Recognition is spiralling out of control in the UK and there are no clear laws in place to protect our privacy

Stop scanning us all with facial recognition Unlike CCTV, facial recognition doesn’t just record what you do, your face becomes a barcode in the same way as your fingerprint or your DNA. We must stop this. The Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, recently revealed her chilling vision of building a “panopticon” where “the eyes of the state can be on you at all times.” Your passport photo is now being searched by police facial recognition systems, even if you have done nothing wrong […]

  6. I bought a CZUR ET Max scanner, assuming it would be nice for the big pile of old computer brochures I have to scan. Never have I been so disappointed...

The software is buggy (doesn't recognize selection half the time), auto-trim and crop is useless, flattening doesn't really work and the quality is piss poor. Yet I was testing on what seemed like an easy candidate: almost flat A4 commercial booklet, in good diffused natural lighting.

Here's a picture of the cover page "scanned" at 600 DPI, and side-by-side details comparison from the scanner and a phone picture. The auto-descreening messed up most of the details, the front page text is oddly sharpened while all the computer details are blurry.

It would be alright for doing quick and dirty scans, but the quality & software doesn't warrant the high price when a phone and ScanTailor have better results... And the phone is less expensive than the scanner. Boo.

In a nutshell, don't bother. I'll go back to my flatbed for the time being and will try to get a Plustek book scanner at a later time.

  10. 🕵️‍♂️ LinkedIn's latest trick: #scanning your #browser extensions like a nosy neighbor peeking through your blinds. They encrypt the results, so don't worry—no one will know you're into cat memes. 😺🔒 But hey, it's all for "user #experience," just like when your cat "helps" you type. 🐾💻
