I had taken this to be a beetle. It is only around 4mm and was running along. It turns out to be a burrowing shieldbug (Legnotus limbosus). It seems to be spreading out from South-East England.

Focus stacking is damn finnicky. This is a stack of 40 images out of my R6, and it mostly worked out ok, except I managed to miss one focal plane slice on the top bug, meaning it's a tiny bit blurry, and it is killing me to look at.

These hawthorn shieldbugs are absolutely *everywhere* on my cotoneaster. Every nymph stage represented somewhere, groups on all the leaves and berries.
