Focus stacking is damn finnicky. This is a stack of 40 images out of my R6, and it mostly worked out ok, except I managed to miss one focal plane slice on the top bug, meaning it's a tiny bit blurry, and it is killing me to look at.

These hawthorn shieldbugs are absolutely *everywhere* on my cotoneaster. Every nymph stage represented somewhere, groups on all the leaves and berries.

10/09/2024 - A walk from the house today. Bit too windy for much else. Quiet roads, sleepy feet. The rowan berries are looking wow this year.

We spent a good while looking for gorse shieldbugs, perseverance paid off and we found one, happy us. Also my current favourite hoverfly - Sun fly.

This one is a small Bishop's Mitre Shieldbug (Aelia acuminata). The head is very chiselled, allegedly in the shape of the hat.

This is a change from the usual shieldbugs. It has sharp spikes protruding from either side of the shoulder plate. Although overall brown, there are precise orange patches of different sizes, forming a pattern on the back.

It is a Spiked Shieldbug (Picromerus bidens).
