This is probably old hat for the computer heads, but today I learned that a catalyst for the GNU General Public License was a broken, closed-source Xerox laser printer at MIT. 🖨️
As the winds of change blow around your computer, take comfort that printers have always sucked and will suck for your grand kids too.

Googled for solutions, as I was sure as hell not going to buy a new print head after only having printed 50 pages. Ordered stuff from #aliexpress. Followed a video, didn't work. Ended up soaking (just) the print head in warm water, pushing cleaning fluid through, still not working. #printers #hp

Couple days ago I changed up my WIFI config. No new equipment: just refreshing settings, changing defaults and the password, etc. Eventually got through updating all my devices that connect.
EXCEPT... my 2 Brother printers. Forgot about them, because honestly I rarely print anything these days (how 'bout you)?
Until I needed to print a couple items to mail... and then....

A talking self-driving car with image recognition I can swallow, but Knight Rider was really stretching plausibility with a *functioning printer*

Printer help wanted!
My old HP 3200 printer is very temperamental and is refusing to be recognised by my desktop. I want to replace it.
What do you recommend? I don't want another HP printer. I don't print that many documents and probably only need a black and white printer.

If you were wondering if you could print from a #hpux system running a #windows3 application via Wabi via JetDirect being emulated on an Oki c542 printer.
Yes, yes you can. It all just kind of works without much fuss, except that I had to change the snmp community name for my printer because the old hpux drivers don't seem to like the snmpv2 stuff?
I'm kind of floored this all works.

@debacle Or do it like us did if you have the physical space:
Buy a used office #copymachine on the 2nd hand market for maybe 300€. Add 100-150€ to rent a truck to get it to your home.
Ours is: #KonicaMinolta #Bizhub C224e https://kmbs.konicaminolta.us/products/predecessor-products/bizhub-c224e/ but you may get Konica Minolta machines also under the brand "Develop": https://www.konicaminolta.eu/eu-en/news/develop-brand-identity-refresh
Those https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multifunction_Printer offer awesome features, reliability, stability, proper document loader, A3 size scanning and printing, color, ... and are very easy to maintain with astonishing cheap supply. A fresh load of toner lasts for 50.000 pages or so. Basically endlessly for a typical household.
Make sure to disconnect it from power supply when not needed as it is consuming too much IMO. I do it via Shelly Plug S + HomeAssistant integration.

So, #cars are like #printers now. Have you ever tried to get #support for a specific printer problem in the big electronics chain you bought it in?
It's the same in the #dealership!
"If the error is not 100% reproducible or you have a permanent light/error message, we won't help you"
"Where is the 12V aux power outlet? Does it even have one?" - "I have no idea"
Actually found the outlet after typing in VERY SPECIFIC search terms in the manual. 12V wasn't one of them.

"Although qualified as a doctor, [Rune Elmqvist] chose to invent medical equipment instead. In 1949, while working at Elema-Schonander (later Siemens-Elema), in Stockholm, he applied for a patent for the Mingograph, the first inkjet printer.

One of Elmqvist’s other inventions [was] the first fully implantable, rechargeable pacemaker.""https://spectrum.ieee.org/rune-elmqvist

LOL, I've had the IPP port forwarded to my printer for a decade because I wanted someone to try to print to it, but never got anything. But just two days after replacing the printer, I got this :neocat_laugh:
I guess whatever scanning tool was used couldn't spot the old printer (a Xerox Phaser). I do remember that the Xerox didn't return anything useful on http://printer:631 (I think it was an error of some sort, but it might've just been a blank page), while the new one (a Brother) shows the same printer status that's shown on ports 80/443.
(FYI, the uncropped pic on e621 is NSFW)
