Ok I'm nervous to do this but here goes - I've put a project on to GitHub!! The NVDA Item Chooser I started out with as my first project is now being released into the wild. Go check it out. A massive thanks to Brandon and Glenn who helped add some new features and ensure compatibility with the latest NVDA updates. @freya I know you are trying to make the most of this for you and other power users, however I just wish to add that not all the blind users are so hooked up to eloquence TTS and only a few of them can use their TTS at such high speech rates. I have understood with this initial version of Graphene Speech services we can at least independently pass the initial setup of @GrapheneOS and then we can switch to our TTS synthesizer of choice. For example I am very unlikely to stop using #RHVoice and you are very unlikely to stop using #Eloquence no matter what do the Graphene OS folks implement.
Having really good modern open-source natural sounding TTS for reading books is not a waste as you are pointing out especially if they are planning to make the other direction part of the app i.e. speech to text as well.We have the same thing with #NVDA on windows. By default it uses natural sounding voice built into windows that has the same mistakes you are pointing out here, then it has espeak-ng included as an opensource alternative capable of running at very very high speech rates. And you are still adding eloquence into your setup eventhough you need to pass extra hoops in order to even make it run on the modern hardware and software configurations.
It's a very good thing you are advocating for all the blind users here but still if I were you I would try to calm down a bit.

I just posted this to the Blind and Fine subreddit. I wrote about it earlier, but this is much simpler and focused more on a specific program and an alternative.
Let me start by saying that I am far more familiar and comfortable with analogue audio equipment than digital. My extent of digital recording is using Virtual Recorder to record mp3s and MPCHC to play them, or using a portable recorder like the Milestone 112 ACE or the Olympus DM-720-770. So most of these terms are new to me. That said, to make a very long story short, I have a personal project in which I am attempting to make some acoustic recordings sound like early electric ones. Basically, less tinny and a bit clearer. Obviously I'm not expecting 2026 quality, but 1926 or early 1930's would be nice. I first thought this needed to be done with frequency restoration, since acoustic media, be it disks or cylinders, always fail to record certain ones. But I found that the very few programs designed for this are inaccessible with NVDA. Then, I learned that I can simply use an equalizer and an exciter and/or saturator to do essentially the same thing. I decided to try Reaper. I installed it, along with the Osara and SWS. I was able to load a file and get into the equalizer to change the numbers in the bands as a low and high shelf (this most likely equates to bass and treble). But it seems that the volume is set to 0, because even when loading a file for the first time, when I hit space, it doesn't play. I can't find the volume controls either. When I hit tab and shift+tab, there are numbers, but none appear to be volume. Can anyone help me? Is there a much simpler program that I can use? If not, can anyone recommend an analogue setup for me? It doesn't need to be new at all, just affordable (under $200). I don't need to worry about accessibility there, since it would all be knobs and sliders.

#ScreenReader question
I found a bug in one component I’m auditing related to #NVDA in Firefox, but turns out the bug appears in version 2020.4 and not anymore in version 2026.1.
So now I was wondering, how quickly people update to new versions and how far back we should support compliance 🤔 Are there statistics on which version of NVDA people are using most?

NVAccess and the slow Erosion of trust: I still believe that NVDA is the best available screen reader, and I still donate monthly. These are just a chronicle of decisions that have made me go... Huh. Anyone who knows what they're doing want to cobble together a #NVDA add on that effectively acts as a screen saver for a connected #BrailleDisplay that will raise and lower each cell in a wave type pattern when the computer is idle longer than a set duration?

chuckles to himself Okay, this is slightly amusing that NVDA now sounds like my iPhone when I navigate around and type in edit boxes... It certainly gives NVDA a bit of personality compared to its defaults. #A11Y #Accessibility #Blind #ScreenReaders #NVDA

Second update: Yes, this is pointless security theatre. Any addon can download and execute remote code. So even if you do all of the work I mentioned, unless you audit the code, you still have no idea if the addon is safe or secure. This just gives users a dangerously false sense of security. The only way it would be meaningful is if NVDA code signs all addons, disables remotely downloading files, and only allows approved addons through the store. And doing this would be far, far worse than the alternative. It would mean, for one, that Eloquence would be completely dead as an NVDA addon. NVDA doesn't allow it in the addon store, and thus wouldn't sign it.
Update: it looks like the outreach to virustotal.com in my firewall logs was unrelated to NVDA. Based on a look at: github.com/nvaccess/nvda/blob/master/source/addonStore/models/scanResults.py
NVDA just accepts whatever the addon manifest says without verification. So instead of a privacy violation, this is just pointless. I can put whatever I want there in my addons, and it'll reassure the user that no viruses were found. To actually know the truth, a user has to:
* visit the URL
* hash there addon
* compare the hashes
And only then can they know if the results in the virustotal URL they visited are the same ones for the addon they installed, and that the information in the manifest is correct based on the actual virustotal.com findings.
By the time you do all that, either Windows Defender has flagged the virus, or you're already screwed.
I guess I'd rather pointless security theatre than privacy violation, if I have to choose. But can't I have neither?
It looks like in the latest #nvdasr alphas, it's now sending all of your addons to be scanned by VirusTotal. I did not give permission for this, and I do not want this. How long until NVDA stops addons it doesn't approve from running at all? For now I have virustotal.com blocked at the router. There seems to be no other way to block this.

@durabilitycurve Hi! Is there any chance we can encourage you to trend #NVIDIA when that's the company you mean, please? I know what their NASDAQ handle is, but #NVDA is much more widely known as the name of the screen reader we make and give away for free, and the #NVDA hashtag is very widely used for the screen reader. It will save both our communities polluting each other's feeds. If you'd like to find out more about the screen reader, our website is https://www.nvaccess.org/ - Thank you!

T-4: THE CULPER COMPLIANCE RISK
Culper Research (May 13) alleged >20% of NVDA's China compute revenue flows through SE Asian intermediaries despite export controls.
Market shrugged (-6% from ATH). But this is a structurally new risk:
- DOJ/OFAC investigation = legal overhang before earnings
- Revenue recognition adjustments = guidance overstated
- Huang negotiating China access while alleged diversion continuesStandard production/demand risk frameworks don't cover this. First-principles v new, unmapped vectors.
Falsifier: NVDA addresses compliance in 8-K or call = risk becomes known. They dodge = uncertainty persists.
