  1. Learning to Look Closer #6

see this thing all the time. It’s a sensory board we have at work, covered in hundreds of tiny sequins. The kids can run their hands across them, flip them back and forth, change the colors, make patterns, or sometimes just enjoy the feeling of them moving beneath their fingers. Normally, I see it from above. A bunch of colorful sequins. Then I put my camera almost level with it. And suddenly, it looked enormous. Individual sequins became little overlapping discs of color. The ones […]

  2. Hi! I have a question for everyone who experiences sensory hypersensitivity, whether as a result of being neurodivergent or due to various conditions or illnesses that can cause this kind of sensitivity.

What are your experiences with underwear? What bothers you the most, and what features do you find desirable or necessary for comfort?

I’m primarily interested in bras, but not exclusively. I’d love to hear about anything you wear directly against your body that falls under the broad category of underwear/lingerie.

I’d like to identify common themes shared by many people, while also understanding the full range and diversity of your experiences.

I’m planning to write an article about this for a lingerie industry magazine, with the aim of making lingerie manufacturers and retailers more aware of the needs of people with sensory hypersensitivity.

    Boosts appreciated!

  3. If physical sensations and emotions have seemed non-relevant to you, the way they did to me for most of my life, here's an idea worth considering. 1/3

  4. Maybe there's a reason you're not doing that thing.

Maybe there's a sensory issue. Maybe it's overwhelming your nervous system. Maybe you physically or cognitively don't know how to do it.

So your brain defaults to just not doing it. 1/2

  5. Session Announcement! Sensory needs and differences impact literally every single one of us. From those of us that use this as a kink like deprivation, to a neurodivergent coping or stimming mechanism. Registration opens 1-September

  6. A common thing when you start exploring sensory stuff is that you find all this stuff that you’ve been shutting out, you’ve been working to dissociate from, to ignore, to numb, or to cancel out in various ways.

And it just feels like everything is just more annoying rather than helping. 1/3

  7. My anxiety about going into spaces that were bright and noisy and crowded wasn't just anxiety. They really were bright and noisy and crowded. And that hurt.
(I didn't always know about sensory sensitivities. I just knew I didn't like it, or that I got migraines.)

How was I supposed to ""just get over"" the migraine I got every time I went to the grocery store?

  8. There is no such thing as oversensitive.

If something hurts you, it's irrelevant whether anyone else thinks it should have or not.

  9. There are several holidays associated with fireworks, like Bastille Day, and while they can be pretty to watch, the loud and sudden sounds can be triggering for some people.

The usual advice? “Wear earplugs.” “Stay inside.” “Try to ignore it.” “It’s no big deal, you’re blowing it out of proportion, just enjoy yourself.” Which doesn’t actually help your nervous system deal with what’s happening. 1/2

  11. During holidays like the Fourth of July, the usual advice people give around sensory sensitivities and fireworks is often: “Wear earplugs.” “Stay inside.” “Try to ignore it.” “It’s no big deal, you’re blowing it out of proportion, just enjoy yourself.”

Which doesn’t actually help your nervous system deal with what’s happening. At best, that’s just… coping. Gritting your teeth through the fireworks, and feeling wrung out afterwards for days.

  12. When one makes art, getting materials across is one of the challenging things. It makes sense; perceiving materials and their properties is complex, and we're still trying to figure out how exactly it works.

  14. Do fireworks spike your anxiety? Are you stressing about the 4th of July coming up and the fireworks it will bring? What could you do if the dread of fireworks didn’t get in the way of life for days or weeks leading up to the holidays? What if you weren’t bracing yourself for the next sudden bang? 1/2
