  1. Me after seeing the price the hearing aids I'll need since my area doesn't have the "Free NHS Hearing Aids" assistance, so I need to save up to £3,000 despite the fact groceries put me in my overdraft this month:

  3. PSA:

I recently turned 50 and, to celebrate, my wife told me I wasn't heaing things normally anymore.

I went to the ear people who agreed with her.

I'm getting hearing aids before my mother and before my father in law, both of whom hear much worse than I do, because current science suggests that untreated hearing loss contributes to cognitive decline and dementia. No thank you!

    I'll take the bionic parts.

  5. Hey Fediverse, I have a friend with an #Android phone and #hearingAids paired to it. They are looking for a feature like iOS’s Live Listen (support.apple.com/en-au/guide/). Does anyone know if it’s possible on Android? #accessibility #a11y

  9. That feeling when you break your hearing aid charger trying to mod it but still need it to hear.

I successfully replaced the battery but ripped off TWO of the usb pads while trying to take off the old micro usb connector. Was basicly a lost cause after that. Couldn’t get a reliable connection with my old TS80 iron.

  11. I love the fact that #AirPodsPro can be used as #HearingAids, but have you ever tried setting them up for a 92-year old technophobe who has already lost most of their hearing?

“Are they in all the way?”

    “Huh?”

“ARE THEY IN ALL THE WAY?”

    “How do I know?”

    “Are they comfortable?”

    “Huh?”

I can’t run the hearing test for them because the app says that both AirPods need to be in. How can I troubleshoot when the person can’t even hear me?

Super frustrated but not yet defeated.

  14. Does anyone know anything about free open code software for hearing aids?
Is there any open software for changing the controls of hearing aids without needing an appointment with an audiologist?

I get so angry everytime I think about it. After buying something so simple at such an exaggerated cost, I still can't control my everyday hearing. I need around six appointments before the hearing aids stop hurting me every day.

  16. I'm in the waiting space in my tattoo shop, and there's a kid here with their parent.. the kid is maybe 5 years old, and has bilateral hearing aids.

They just looked at me and said "did you know bats hear better than me?"

I told them bats also hear better than me, and they seem pretty chuffed by that.

  26. Postie just came (on a Friday! How odd) and put a lumpy envelope through the letterbox. I couldn't think what it was, & there was no hint on the envelope; but when I opened it, I found it was the hearing aid batteries I'd ordered on Tuesday! SIX packs of them! So that's OK.

  27. I Wonder where the #hearingaids developers are! These would be awesome to have do a talk.
Same for the "process signal, but *fast*" people; top of my head, we've got @rygorous , but he's more on the "fast" than on the signals side. We have @mkretz who could talk about C++ SIMD stuff, but my guess: he'd prefer to talk in a room full of compileristas?
Are #EMerge #FEM/#Heavi people here? It'd seem #Sionna gets a lot of well-deserved attention combing physics+signals, but it's not the sole toolkit!

  29. Just wondering how many folks in the Fediverse are hard of hearing and wear #HearingAids?

I do - a combination of loud music, motorcycles and being around scuba air compressors rather a lot, plus I now have age-related deterioration beginning to kick in. I'm currently using bluetooth enabled hearing aids for the inevitable online calls, and over-the-ear headphones when I don't want the battery drain (currently Bose NC700s, but eyeing up the 2nd Gen Ultras that have been released…).

  31. ⚠️ Heads Up for Hearing Aid🦻 Users:

    2 people
+ two sets Hearing Aids with BT
    +2 cell phone apps (unsynced)
+2 laptops (unsynced) with BT capability
    +one wifi
    =====================
    100% Hearing Mayham

Do not buy the same brand (Signa) and model hearing aids
Our hearing aids were connecting to each others computers and the company cell phone app and interfering, cross connecting and adjusting our devices!
Apparently the company is unaware and "helpless" !!

  33. The charger for wife's hearing aids has a weird accessibility fail.

The charger is a little black plastic box that plugs into the wall. It has a slot for each hearing aid and a lid that snaps shut. Getting the hearing aids into position so that they will charge is rather fiddly - if they're slightly out of place, they won't charge. They each have a light that turns on when they're charging, but closing the lid of the case will often dislodge one sufficiently to break the connection.

Someone involved with the design of the charger or the hearing aids clearly recognized this problem, so there's a backup mechanism. It seems that if one hearing aid is charging but the other isn't, after a few minutes it starts making a sound.

    A very quiet sound.

It sounds, roughly, like a single lonely cricket somewhere outside.

A sound which no one who needed the hearing aids could possibly perceive while not wearing the hearing aids.

This creates a weird dynamic where I occasionally have to communicate to my wife "crickets" so that she knows to fix the issue.

And all of this could be much more easily solved by just making the lid of the box out of clear plastic. Or adding a light on the outside of the box to indicate that the connection is bad.

(And writing this, I'm realizing that this was probably a heroic attempt at a software fix to a hardware problem. A fix which even sort of works for us. It's still a definite fail though.)

  34. #HearingAids First, I should have done more research before jumping in to this decision. Having said that, there's enough I like about these Oticon hearing aids that I think I'll keep them. There's not a good, affordable accessory that would let me transmit analog mixer audio to them, but my hearing is still good enough that there are work arounds. When that changes, so might the brand I purchase. The iPhone performance with them is quite good. I don't like that the Companion app is so inaccessible, and I will constantly advocate for change, as I did with their consumer support line. I so much thank @JonathanMosen and @aiden_gardiner for their valuable input. Thanks to their feedback, I'll be a smarter consumer when my needs change and when I need to make a new purchase. Although I'm satisfied enough with the Oticons that I think I'll keep them, my big mistake was not gathering more data first before making the decision.
I could have exchanged these for Phonak, and that may happen in the future. But exchanging them would have meant refund to insurance and filing a new claim for the new hearing aids. For now, these meet my needs. Tweet, Tweet! (a sound I can now hear, along with the kitty's small bell)

  35. @squaremoon @jim_easterbrook @jkirkendall
I first went to my GP (because that's how you get a no nonsense hearing test in England) because I was having trouble hearing people in crowds, and sometimes in meetings

The hearing test initially showed I had the common high frequency loss but only in my right ear.
But the test also identified that I had quite severe tinnitus - I had 'kind of known' about the noise in my head, but had become used to it (also very common).
The Audiologist gave me a hearing aid (free with the NHS) that both nulled out the tinnitus and improved my hearing.

About 4 years ago a repeat hearing test showed that my hearing had deteriorated markedly in both ears - so now I have two little helpers!

The tinnitus can break through the hearing aids when it's particularly severe, but they've possibly saved my sanity if nothing else!

  37. @SnowyCA @ai6yr It occurs to me that because I have open cone style #hearingaids a good pair of over-the-hear #headphones could work nicely--accept while I'm driving. The one's that cup my ears don't work because the cups cover the mic ports and causes squealing like all get out! 🙀

  38. @SnowyCA @ai6yr it would help if I could connect my #hamradios to the hearing aids. I have the MFJ-618 SPEECH INTEL. DUAL CH. ENHANCER for my hf and vhf/uhf radios.

The SonicCloud app really helps. I cried 🥲when i listened to my favorite song through it (streaming into my #hearingaids) because I could understand the words.

  39. I wish I had been fitted with clunky hearing aids aged two…as it was I had to wait another 4.5 years and I believe those years were vital in terms of speech, socialisation and confidence.

If you think your baby or toddler might be struggling to hear, go to the GP as soon as possible who can refer them to an audiologist for tests. Don’t let fear of appearance stop you.
