Whups, have hardcore last track of time today. I mean, that started at the aught; I managed to turn my alarm off so quickly that when I *did* wake up, I thought it was Saturday. Ha, nope.

I received the stainless steel chain I had been waiting for on a custom order, which is what my post-work project was. Someone had asked what metal my necklace chain was made of, and the listing unhelpfully said 'silver plated... metal'. So I bought stainless still findings of all the types needed to make a dice pride necklace, and got that shipped off earlier. I might have to see about getting some heavier dutier tools, because trying to fold stainless steel around is (unsurprisingly) hard. xD

Day two of hearing aids is mainly alright. I've knocked them out a few times because I play with my hair a lot; looks aside, long hair is a great toy. My ears are also a little sore across the top from that, but I don't think that's going to be a real issue. The aids themselves are very light and don't exert any real pressure in my ears.

It's also nice to think about how much money the NHS personally saved me. I *think* these aids go for £865 apiece wholesale. I'm sure they get an even better deal, but like. That's some money. And I get free batteries (swapped out at my village surgery), and free replacement for the perishable tubes (email the hospital every 5 months or so). Yes, I was told the waiting time was 4 months. Yes, it ended up being 9 months, and that's annoying. But I'll always sing up the NHS because they've made my life better in so many ways. :)

An audiogram measures something extremely useful: the quietest pure tone we can detect at different frequencies.

But:
Detection ≠ Attention ≠ Understanding

Real hearing means extracting a voice from noise, recognising incomplete information, localising sound, adapting to change — and doing all of that comfortably and without unreasonable cognitive effort.

UK hard-of-hearing people, can you help? I have Dana Logic Ambio hearing aids with the pretty awful Be More Android app. The instructions say you should not use the Android Bluetooth pairing system but the one provided by the app, but it won't work on my phone. Normal Bluetooth doors with one exception, direct audio streaming that should allow the aids to work as media headphones (more...)

I recently turned 50 and, to celebrate, my wife told me I wasn't heaing things normally anymore.

I went to the ear people who agreed with her.

I'm getting hearing aids before my mother and before my father in law, both of whom hear much worse than I do, because current science suggests that untreated hearing loss contributes to cognitive decline and dementia. No thank you!

I'll take the bionic parts.

I successfully replaced the battery but ripped off TWO of the usb pads while trying to take off the old micro usb connector. Was basicly a lost cause after that. Couldn’t get a reliable connection with my old TS80 iron.

Is there any open software for changing the controls of hearing aids without needing an appointment with an audiologist?

I get so angry everytime I think about it. After buying something so simple at such an exaggerated cost, I still can't control my everyday hearing. I need around six appointments before the hearing aids stop hurting me every day.

I'm in the waiting space in my tattoo shop, and there's a kid here with their parent.. the kid is maybe 5 years old, and has bilateral hearing aids.

They just looked at me and said "did you know bats hear better than me?"

I told them bats also hear better than me, and they seem pretty chuffed by that.

Postie just came (on a Friday! How odd) and put a lumpy envelope through the letterbox. I couldn't think what it was, & there was no hint on the envelope; but when I opened it, I found it was the hearing aid batteries I'd ordered on Tuesday! SIX packs of them! So that's OK.

Just wondering how many folks in the Fediverse are hard of hearing and wear #HearingAids?

I do - a combination of loud music, motorcycles and being around scuba air compressors rather a lot, plus I now have age-related deterioration beginning to kick in. I'm currently using bluetooth enabled hearing aids for the inevitable online calls, and over-the-ear headphones when I don't want the battery drain (currently Bose NC700s, but eyeing up the 2nd Gen Ultras that have been released…).
