Also known as Amaterasu Omikami, Amateru Kami, or Ohirume no Muchi. Her name translates to “The Great Divinity Illuminating the Heavens.”
She’s the central deity of Shinto mythology/religion. She’s the sun goddess & the traditional mythical ancestor of the Japanese Imperial Family. She is also portrayed in Japan’s earliest literary texts, the Kojiki (circa 712 CE; “Records of Ancient Matters”) & the Nihon Shoki (720 CE; “The Chronicles of Japan”).
As the ruler (or 1 of the rulers) of the heavenly realm, Takamagahara & as the mythical ancestress of the Imperial House of Japan via her grandson, Ninigi. Along with 2 of her siblings (Tsukuyomi, the moon deity & Susanoo, the impetuous storm-god), she ranks as 1 of the “Three Precious Children,” the 3 most important offspring of the creator god, Izanagi.
Amaterasu’s main place of worship, the Grand Shrine of Ise in Ise, Mie Prefecture, is 1 of Shinto’s holiest sites & a major pilgrimage center & tourist spot. As with other Shinto kami, she’s also enshrined in several Shinto shrines throughout Japan.
Both the Kojiki & Nihon Shoki agree that Amaterasu is the daughter of the God Izanagi & the older sister of Tsukuyomi & Susanoo. According to the Kojiki, Amaterasu was not born through standard procreation. But emerged from the left eye of Izanagi, as he performed a ritual purification (misogi) in a river. He was washing away the pollutants of Yomi (the underworld) after a failed attempt to rescue his deceased wife, Izanami.
Impressed by her brilliance, Izanagi granted Amaterasu his sacred bead necklace & placed her in charge of Takamagahara (the High Plain of Heaven). Her brothers were born alongside her from his nose.
One of the legends in the Shoki tells that Amaterasu ordered her sibling Tsukuyomi to go down to the terrestrial world & visit the goddess Ukemochi. When Ukemochi vomited food from her mouth & gave it to Tsukuyomi at a banquet, a disgusted & offended Tsukuyomi slew her & returned to Takamagahara. This single act angered Amaterasu, causing her to split away from Tsukuyomi. Thus separating night from day.
Amaterasu then sent another god, Ame-no-Kumahito, who found various food crops and animals emerging from Ukemochi’s corpse. Amaterasu had the grains collected & sown for humanity’s use &, putting the silkworms in her mouth, reeled thread from them. From this began agriculture & sericulture (silk farming).
When Susanoo was expelled by his dad, Izanagi, for his troublesome nature & incessant wailing on account of missing his deceased mother, Izanami, for his troublesome nature & incessant wailing on account of missing his deceased mom. He went up to Takamagahara to say farewell to Amaterasu.
A suspicious Amaterasu went out to meet him dressed in male clothing & in armor, at which Susanoo proposed a trial by pledge (ukehi) to prove his sincerity. In the ritual, the 2 gods each chewed & spat out an object carried by the other. 5 (or 6, in some tellings), gods & goddesses were born as a result.
Amaterasu adopted the boys as her sons & gave the girls to Susanoo. The girls Susanoo were given were later known as the 3 Munakata goddesses. Susanoo declared that he’d won the trial. He raged with victory by destroying Amaterasu’s rice paddies, defiling her sacred palace, & flung a flayed piebald (spotted/blotched, especially black & white) horse (which was flayed alive) into her weaving hall. This alarmed 1 of her weaving maidens, striking her genitals against a weaving shuttle, killing her.
Amaterasu, furious, shut herself into the Amano-Iwato (Heavenly Rock Cave) & sealed the entrance with a massive boulder. This plunged Heaven & Earth into total darkness. Because she was the sun. Evil spirits overrun the world, & chaos reigned.
After Amaterasu hid herself in the cave, the kami gods (led by Omoikane, the god of wisdom) conceived a plan to lure her out. Because they realize that force wouldn’t work against the sun. They forged the Yata no Kagami (an 8-sided bronze mirror) & strung exquisite magatama jewels on a tree outside the cave entrance.
The goddess of mirth, Ame-no-Uzume, overturned a wooden tub, stepped onto it, & performed an intentionally wild, ecstatic, & revealing dance. Inside the cave, Amaterasu is surprised that the gods should show such mirth in her absence. Ame-no-Uzume answered that they were celebrating, slid the boulder blocking the cave’s entrance & peeked out.
Because they had found a deity even more beautiful & radiant than she. At which Ame-no-Koyane & Futodama brought out the mirror (the Yata-no-Kagami) & held it before her. As Amaterasu stepped out to look further. The gods held up the bronze mirror. Ame-no-Tajikarao took her hand & pulled her out of the cave.
The cave was then immediately sealed with a straw rope, preventing her from going back inside. But she was so captivated by her own glorious reflection. Thus, light was restored to the world. As punishment for his outrageous behavior, Susanoo was driven out of Takamagahara by the other gods.
Going down to earth, he arrived at the land of Izumo, where he killed the monstrous serpent Yamata no Orochi to rescue the goddess Kushinadahime, whom he eventually married. From the serpent’s carcass, Susanoo found the sword Ame-no-Murakumo-no-Tsurugi (‘Sword of the Gathering Clouds of Heaven’). Also known as Kusanagi-no-Tsurugi (‘Grass-Cutting Sword’), which he presented to Amaterasu as a reconciliatory gift.
According to tradition, she sent her grandson, Ninigi-no-Mikoto, down to pacify Japan. He brought with him 3 sacred items, the Imperial Regalia of Japan:
- Yata no Kagami, the mirror. This represents wisdom & truth.
- Yasakani no Magatama, the jewels. This represents benevolence.
- Kusanagi-no-Tsurugi, the sword. This represents benevolence.
Traditionally, Ninigi’s great-grandson, Emperor Jimmu, became the 1st Emperor of Japan in 660 BCE. To this day, the Japanese imperial family traces an unbroken line of divine descent back to Amaterasu.
Amaterasu is enshrined at the Ise Grand Shrine (Ise Jingu) in Mie Prefecture. This is the most sacred site in Shintoism. In a unique tradition, the main shrine structures are entirely dismantled & rebuilt exactly from scratch every 20 years using ancient joinery techniques.
She’s a virgin goddess & never engages in adult spicy time.
Her son, Ameno Hohi, is considered the ancestral kami of clans in Izumo, which includes the Hoyi clan, Sugawara clan, & the Senge clan. The legendary sumo wrestler Nomi no Sukum is believed to be a 14th-generation descendant of Amanohohi.
She’s sometimes worshipped as having connections with other aspects & forms of nature. She can be considered a goddess of the wind & typhoons alongside her brother. She’s seen as the reason for the day/night cycles. She either made the Japanese archipelago/islands from drops of water that fell from her spear, or she painted Japan into being, alongside her siblings, Susanoo & Tsukuyomi.
She’s also the main character of the video game Okami (2006). In this game, players control Amaterasu, who takes the form of a majestic white wolf, to lift a curse & restore nature using a magical paintbrush.
