  1. the #dirtyfrag exploit does not run successfully on alpine because the path to the donor SUID binary is hardcoded as /usr/bin/su.

    changing that to /bin/bbsuid allows the exploit to run, but it hangs for me on linux-lts 6.18.27.

    interestingly, openpax kernels kill the exploit early in the exploit chain.

    either way, 6.18.28 fixes it for everyone.

    but it goes to show the danger of #SUID binaries and why SUID-less solutions like #capsudo are important.

(Me proposez pas #raspbian). Je reste attaché à debian, apt et apt-get...

  4. So, #Debian has a bit of a reputation on flimsy hardware support. You couldn't even install D12 on a Z8xxx series CPU without fiddling with it unless you wanted to end up with an unbootable system.

    I happen to have next to me another "special" system, a Chromebox with an 8th-gen Intel CPU. Which have a notoriously heinous sound subsystem (there's a paid driver for Windows).

    I've dropped #CachyOS, #Ubuntu, #Fedora, #ElementaryOS, #ZorinOS, #MXLinux, #Bazzite, #AlpineLinux, #SolusLinux, #VanillaOS, and a few more on this system.

    NONE of them was able to correctly configure audio on this machine. Some would not even detect an audio sink, others would have an "Analog Audio" sink, but no HDMI. Others would have a "Dummy Output". Fedora even listed my network-connected AV Receiver as an audio sink (!), but not HDMI.

    And then there's Debian 13... Which correctly outputs over HDMI **OUT OF THE BOX**...

  5. This excellent video and link to the configs by @justaguylinux has me wanting to install and explore i3wm:

    youtube.com/watch?v=0xrUVjFKD6E

    I have this notion of configuring my Xorg desktop on Alpine Linux to have a single desktop with all windows as tabs, and i3wm has a built-in tab mode.

  6. One full week under the keel running Alpine Linux on my primary workstation. Even set root on a ZFS mirror - simple to setup. First experience with rEFInd as well - I like it.

    Sharp and snappy, just like the way I like my cars! Ha!

    No new revelations compared to the first few weeks on the test workstation... I'm still tweaking some things for personalization as it happens but all good.

    The Alpine repos are full of good stuff and are current/up2date in a practical manner.

    The only flatpaks I've had to run are Waterfox, Signal Desktop and messing around with the new CoMaps Linux version (this exists - happy! happy! joy! joy!).

    I'm going to migrate my Debian Bookworm servers to Alpine when I get around to the upgrades. I'll keep clients on Debian for the foreseeable future.

    I'm not sure why I'm so excited about Alpine, it just feels like a breathe of fresh air! Modern and simple. Enjoying it.

  8. Ended up kicking Docker Hardened Images to the curb.

    The good folks at #Docker decided to update their #Redis image to use a distro-less start (no shell, no other utilities) *without changing the image tag*.

    So when I started up my #Mastodon server after an upgrade, my customization script wouldn’t run in the container and I had to scramble to find an alternative.

    Basically, they broke the contract of immutable image version tags. Won’t trust them again, even if it did harden #security further.

    So this server is back to a good ol’ upstream #PostgreSQL image on #AlpineLinux. And #Valkey on #Alpine, too, because Redis Ltd..’s software licensing shenanigans are sketchy.

  9. Spent the evening migrating my laptop (XPS 9700) from Debian to Alpine.

    <gasp - horror - shudder>

    Installing is a different experience compared to generic PC hardware. There was a number of things I had to chase manually like wifi, audio, Dell firmware support but it wasn't a big deal. Debian takes care of those things for you on the laptop during install (non-free install ofc).

    The Alpine wiki is quite good. Everything I needed to get things going was there.

    Network Manager is still a pain in the a55 but on a laptop I'll deal with it. Ha.

    A new blog post where @alexhaydock goes into some detail showcasing our minimalistic @alpinelinux Tor relays architecture, a threat model, and including a link to our now-public open source "Emerald Relays" orchestration framework.

    The past 6 months have proven its success, and now we look forward to phase 2 (read the post!), which we need your help in funding. Emerald Onion is a U.S. 501(c)(3) tax-deductible nonprofit, so please consider donating before 31 December! emeraldonion.org/donate/

  18. I just wrote a self-hosted #dyndns server using #knotdns, #bottle for the update server (https PUT), and a #python client to detect IP changes. It's running on #AlpineLinux, the code is minimal and it only uses packages that are in the Alpine repos. Full #IPv4 and #IPv6 support, you can use either or both.

    Why? It's a cool project, and IMHO every dyndns clients and services I tried were bad, insecure, or both.

  22. Hello everyone. I'm The Owlbear. I've been here for like, a bit, and decided I finally needed to do a proper intro post.

    I'm into many nerdy things, particularly TTRPGS, Video Games, and Science Fiction. A few of my favorite things:

    * #Pathfinder2e and #Golarian in general.
    * #Murderbot
    * #Terraria (I suck at it tho)
    * #Fallout but not 76 (or any other multiplayer only game for that matter)
    * A very specific and short list of #Anime
    * The two #Alien movies (Alien and its sequel, Aliens). I'm so glad they never made more.
    * #TTRPGs that aren't D&D 5e (earlier editions are cool tho)
    * #IndieGames
    * #GameDesign
    * #Linux and #Gnome, particularly #Arch #VoidLinux #AlpineLinux and #Fedora
    * #LGBTQIA2S
    * #Owls
    * #Bears
    * #Owlbears
    * The #DCEU - now that James Gunn is in charge

    I like other stuff too.

    I don't like hate, that crap they call AI these days, trolls, and being shitty just to be shitty.

    I believe in love, compassion, empathy, and generally not being a shit person.

  23. Been looking at mastodon.cr/@Linux/11516945266 and thinking that it's probably time to leave #Ubuntu and try something based outside of the #USJurisdiction .

    I was hoping to stick with a #Debian based #LinuxDistro, but looks like that isn't possible.

    Currently, I'm looking #AlpineLinux (alpinelinux.org) for no other reason than it looks nice, supports #flatpak and has native packages for some of the core apps/utilities that I currently use.

    Somewhere I have a spare laptop so can try it on that first. A nice project for this weekend. 🙂

  24. #SingleBoardComputer enthusiasts experienced with booting #Radxa #RadxaZero2Pro with #Amlogic #A311D #SoC? dd the Radxa Debian #linux img to an SDCard, which does boot. The same img file does not appear to boot when dd to USB. Something special need to be done to boot from USB or SDCard? #AlpineLinux appears to have amlogic a311d2 support from pkgs.alpinelinux.org/contents?. It's unclear how to get the standard or uboot Alpine tar.gz files to boot. Is this something with #uboot on #armv8/#aarch64?

  25. Hey #Linux / #Mesa / #gallium folks,

    I'm having a problem where I can't start any graphical user interface, whether it's wayland or x11 because the driver files given by mesa don't have the __driDriverExtensions symbol

    Anyone know how to deal with this? I'm on #AlpineLinux / #AsahiLinux. If you have a lot of linux friends, feel free to boost!
