Besides tiling window managers (bspwm and i3wm), I have mostly used the Cinnamon desktop environment for the past five years.
I am exploring MATE and XFCE more now. I used to use Ubuntu MATE, but haven't really "daily driven" XFCE.
If you had to choose between the two, what would you prefer for a Linux or BSD desktop environment:
#Linux #BSD #MATE #XFCE

📍 NetBSD 11.0-RC4 Comes As Hopefully The Last Release Candidate
「 Following NetBSD 11.0-RC3 from early April, NetBSD developers hope NetBSD 11.0-RC4 is the last release candidate needed before officially releasing NetBSD 11.0. With it being a year and a half since the NetBSD 10.1 milestone and a year since NetBSD 11 was branched, this new BSD operating system update is ready to meet the world 」

Ok, it’s been… a *while* since I used a BSD at any kind of depth, and probably 20 years since I attempted a desktop. So BSD-using friends:
- what #BSD flavor would you recommend for a “comfortable with *nix, but doesn’t want to spend all their time on admin” user with a preference for KDE+Plasma?
- I’m gonna try it as a VM guest first. Any special considerations?
- What’s a good resource for checking hardware compatibility for laptops for that flavor of BSD?
Boost for vis is OK.

Grappig.

Note: this is a very off-the-cuff tier list, using speed as the main qualifier, but the article explains exceptions to that as it goes on.

New post: FreeBSD resource monitoring and accounting.
A practical tour of the base-system toolkit for figuring out *what is actually using my server*: top, vmstat, systat, gstat, netstat/sockstat, procstat, pfctl, and per-jail attribution with kern.racct and rctl.
No ports, no agents. Just FreeBSD.
