CW: Linux AI events, question
Seriously asking, what's the status on the whole #Linux #AI situation?
What I want to know is: what is the status on the Linux kernel situation itself? Is there any significant movement right now or are we still in the stunlocked crisis phase?
The way I see it, a hard fork of the kernel would be next to impossible, right?
- Is there any internal political movement in the Linux Foundation about this?
- Is there an alternative kernel or fork that people are flocking to now at large?
- Right, how's the Hurd's situation these days?
- For that matter, what's the GNU Project's stance on machine-generated code and assets in general?
- How will anti-AI distribution projects like Gentoo and perhaps soon Debian handle it if the kernel itself contains LLM-generated code?
-
Stumbled on #Gentoo toots last night.
On paper Gentoo remains hardcore and punkrock just as it was back when I used to let my souped up gaming station back in circa 2003 spend 24+ hrs compiling the entire OS. Back then Gentoo was number 1 of Linux Distro top ten lists.
When fully installed it would be awesome and amazing... until there was an update and I'd be back to compiling again.
I was time rich back then and doing 12 hr shift work, so this was the perfect OS to monkey around with.
But there was a point when I just needed an application to work and had just an inkling of how a GNU or Linux filesystem and setup worked (still do today TBH) and the idea of compiling all over made me less and less inclined to keep up to date.
And the gaming station was unplayable
I admire those repelling away from Linux kernel b/c Linus' pro #AI statement to further the #GNUHurd kernel project... but the idea of compiling for hours ... I don't know.
Maybe worth a trial to see what the experience is after 23 years.
