Took a lot of work, but finally got hardware accelerated video decoding working in #Waterfox with #NVIDIA on #Linux. Stale packaging in #Mint bit me in the ass and I had to rebuild the `nvidia-vaapi-driver` from source to get the newest version that finally worked with the v595 graphics driver. Feeling pretty smug right now. :smug:

On that note: I could really use a nice plugin for #Waterfox (#Firefox compatible) that blocks AI websites... but until now I have found none. #duckduckgo just lets me block 5 sites... 😐

Die meisten Browser haben einen Werbeblocker vom Start an dabei - wenn man sie denn installiert. #Edge #Chrome #Safari haben diesen Blocker selbstverständlich nicht. Scheinbar gibt es aber noch genügend Nutzer die sich durch die vielen Werbebanner peinigen lassen anstelle selbst aktiv zu werden.

Taking this moment to point out that pressing 'esc' on a modal in firefox/waterfox will close it visually, but NVDA still maintains focus on the modal contents until you tab out and back into the browser window. It happens with tons of modals, especially the social sign-on ones, so I figure either the same component is being reused and it just doesn't play nice with NVDA, or there's some weird interaction between Gecko and NVDA under certain circumstances... or maybe it actually isn't disappearing visually and does disappear when I tab out and back in for some reason

Instead of trying to fix (honestly impressive) fuckup, I decided to just reinstall #Arch and #DankLinux. It was a lot easier than the other options, and I wanted to do some different stuff this time anyway.

For instance, I did a minimal install (no desktop) with just a few tools by default, and then curled the dank installer. Wow does that thing work well, provided you manually install #QuickShell first (at least for me, it kept trying to install both the regular QuickShell and the hit version from the AUR.)

I also set up my favorite file manager (#Nemo), installed #Waterfox and #Helium, and did some other fun stuff.

Now I'm gonna see if I can get Dank working on MangoWM et all. Don't get me wrong, #Niri is gorgeous and easy to use. I'm just havin' fun.

Alternative?
Waterfox, ein KI-freier Firefox-Fork. Mozilla-Konto nutzbar, damit ist ein Sync zwischen versch. Geräten wie gewohnt nutzbar, auch eine Android-App gibt es.

Je nach Distribution in Terminal eingeben:

sudo dnf remove firefox && flatpak install flathub net.waterfox.waterfox

sudo apt remove firefox && flatpak install flathub net.waterfox.waterfox

One full week under the keel running Alpine Linux on my primary workstation. Even set root on a ZFS mirror - simple to setup. First experience with rEFInd as well - I like it.

Sharp and snappy, just like the way I like my cars! Ha!

No new revelations compared to the first few weeks on the test workstation... I'm still tweaking some things for personalization as it happens but all good.

The Alpine repos are full of good stuff and are current/up2date in a practical manner.

The only flatpaks I've had to run are Waterfox, Signal Desktop and messing around with the new CoMaps Linux version (this exists - happy! happy! joy! joy!).

I'm going to migrate my Debian Bookworm servers to Alpine when I get around to the upgrades. I'll keep clients on Debian for the foreseeable future.

I'm not sure why I'm so excited about Alpine, it just feels like a breathe of fresh air! Modern and simple. Enjoying it.

Since #Firefox has decided to shoehorn #AI into their web browser (because that belongs outside of an extension 🙄), I've set up a user.js disabling literally all the ML bullshit for now.

Now I have to decide on which browser to switch to. I'm torn between #LibreWolf and #Waterfox, since both of those seem pretty committed to not doing AI.

And before anyone suggests it, I have a couple Webkit based browsers (#Falkon and #GnomeWeb) to play with, but neither of them is really ready for daily driving.

Also, I have a Blink browser already in #Vivaldi. I don't like that it's not fully open source, but the ad block and such works, it's got no AI, and let's face it, it's pretty.

I just opened up chromium, and it is using my system theme, for both color AND the tabs bar???? My firefox has never done that????¿¿?? I'm using cinnamon theme, semabe, and does anyone know how to make my firefox do that, all the old tricks don't seem to work any more.
