So, one Linux distro I recently donated to is QubesOS, a distro running in the Xfce desktop environment.
One thing that I really love about this OS is the fact that instead of the basic layout one expects from a computer, Qubes focuses on compartmentalizing everything people do online into different virtual machines, and even a specialized WindowsVM for specific Microsoft applications.

I took the Adwaita and Adwaita-dark folders located in /usr/share/themes/ on my cachyos vm and placed 'em to the ~/.themes folder in my void linux vm, lol. It works tho
I don't know the name of the package that provides the adwaita-dark theme for xfce on void linux so yeah.
Just nabbed something from another vm to another vm like it's nothing. it's weird haha

I didn’t want to go this route for various reasons but it looks like a #VirtualMachine is the only option left for me. It should allow me to manage my #PocketPC #PDA without the need to reboot or switch PCs.
I have never ran a #VM before so it will be a learning process.
What are the recommended vms for running Windows XP on #Linux with USB passthrough?
I hear a lot about VirtualBox. Any others?

I am powering up my self-assembled NAS for the first time and, of course, it is not working. I am panicking because I cannot return any of the components I am using… 🤯
The absolute first time I powered it up, it stayed on but the HDMI did not output anything, so I brutally unplugged the power (I am starting to regret I did this), and connected a USB with a Proxmox image on it.
Now, every time I plug in the power supply, the NAS powers for one second, than shuts off for two seconds, then it tries to boot again… It goes like this on and on and on…
Any tips to troubleshoot this?
Here are the components I am using:
- Case: Jonsbo N3
- 6× SATA 6 cables
- PSU: Chieftec CSN-450C 450W SFX 80 Plus Gold
- Topton N18 + Intel N150
- 2× RAM 16GB DDR5
- 2× HDD Seagate Ironwolf NAS 10TB

Fun fact! There is a #FOSS (free and open source) #operatingSystem called #ReactOS, which is designed specifically to be able to run #Windows applications and also to look and feel like Windows. It has been around for many years and is still being developed, even quite seriously with some funding.
Of course, its funding and its development crew are minute compared to Windows, so it is still an unfinished project and you should expect less polish. That being said, many things already work and you can try it out in a #virtualMachine. This page has a lot of useful information and links, including about limitations:

In a thrilling 9-minute dissertation, we're reminded that Windows NT subsystems are like the hipster cousins of VMs, still cool but desperately trying to convince everyone they’re not just living in the basement. 🖥️🧠

I've written a series of blog posts, in which I write a #bytecode #compiler and a #virtualMachine for arithmetic in #Haskell. We explore the following topics in the series:
- Parsing arithmetic expressions to ASTs.
- Compiling ASTs to bytecode.
- Interpreting ASTs.
- Efficiently executing bytecode in a VM.
- Disassembling bytecode and decompiling opcodes for debugging and testing.
- Unit testing and property-based testing for our compiler and VM.
- Benchmarking our code to see how the different passes perform.
- All the while keeping an eye on performance. The third and final post of the series that focuses on writing the virtual machine is now out: https://abhinavsarkar.net/posts/arithmetic-bytecode-vm/

Seems #Perplexity *really* wants people to download #Comet (I'm not a fan).
They're offering 5000 "Discord Orbs" (which is prob the most so far since the beginning of #Discord Quests) for people who downloads and uses it for 15 min.
Little did they know I used a tempoary throwaway email and a VM with https://github.com/utmapp, then deleted everything. 🤣
Yeah, thanks—but no thanks.
I don't even use have a Discord client installed! #UTMapp is awesome!

If you have a #ProxmoxBackupServer as part of your #backup strategy, you can actually pick out individual files from the backups to download and restore manually. Saved me from having to do a full restore of a #virtualmachine that would have been a huge pain in the ass.

A note on my #UltimaVM for #RISC_OS users: when coding on Ultima, we don't care at all about RO multistasking, we just code like on Windows, Linux or macOS. If we want to run an Ultima App in the desktop we just use the `--mt` option in the command line, everything else is handled by Ultima itself:👇

yk what i'll just tell you what's wrong
even when i select the "no passthrough please" option, when the systemd output is on screen it ocasionally says something along the lines of "the gpu is already bound to vfio" which leads me to believe that the boot option is not working bc it's not letting the host use what i'm passing through to it. oddly enough i can't use virt-manager when i'm not in passthrough mode
yea i need help pls help me :BlobCat_BigSob: #nixos #nix #vfio #virtualmachine #virtualmachines my current virtualisation config is at github.com/JuxGD/nixconfig/blob/94d149a7d81fbd48735a091a7d0fa470318d79a6/virtualisation.nix

hey hey #Linux #FileSystem #ZFS #RAID #XFS entities! I'm looking for extremely opinionated discourses on alternatives to ZFS on Linux for slapping together a #JBOD ("Just a Bunch Of Disks", "Just a Buncha Old Disks", "Jesus! Buncha Old Disks!", etc) array.
I like ZFS but the fact that it's not in tree in-kernel is an issue for me. What I need most is reliability and stability (specifically regarding parity) here; integrity is the need. Read/write don't have to be blazingly fast (not that I'm mad about it).
I also have one #proxmox ZFS array where a raw disk image is stored for a #Qemu #VirtualMachine; in the VM, it's formatted to XFS. That "seems" fine in limited testing thus far (and seems fast?, so it does seem like the defaults got the striping correct) but I kind of hate how I have multiple levels of abstraction here.
I don't think there's been any change on the #BTRFS front re: raid-like array stability (I like and use BTRFS for single disk filesystems but) although I would love for that to be different.
I'm open to #LVM, etc, or whatever might help me stay in tree and up to date. Thank you! Boosts appreciated and welcome.

Just gotta say that running Windows OSes on a Mac in VMs .. rocks!
I have clients on Windows and Mac. Been using VMware Fusion for years to run multiple OSes at once and switch between them as needed.
The best part, though, is being able to run old software! I have a copy of #AutoCAD 2004 (from when I worked at #Autodesk 20+ years ago), that runs great in my Win7 VM. I'm also able to run #FrameMaker 12 (2014) .. pre-subscription.

I have been trying to build #docker images of crossposter projects with no avail so far using #linuxmint; it's fine for casual daily driving but it being Ubuntu which being Debian means that the packages are old with old bugs. I think I will try the #archlinux based #endevouros in a #virtualmachine, I heard it has newer packages.
Or invest into #programmingsocks.
