So. After deleting and rebuilding my `ESP`partition I don't even know how many times and trying out so many different ways of setting up either #rEFind or #GRUB and messing with the `mkinitcpio.d/linux.preset` files, I finally got my original #Arch partition and new #Artix partition booting.

I could not, for the life of me, figure out how to segregate the Arch and Artix boot loaders and initramfs. But since they appear to be the same, both being Arch under the hood...

Well. After like 3 or 4 failed attempts at installing #Artix, #FreeBSD installed on the first attempt. Struggled for a little trying to get #Grub to boot it. Switched to #rEFInd and booted right up.

I guess I'm trying out FreeBSD for now.

Recently we bought a used ThinkPad T530 for my partner, and I've put both Haiku and Linux Mint on it, dual booting with rEFInd. I'm quite happy with the result!

Also, while I do get some crashes in Haiku from time to time, it's way faster than Mint. 🍂

And, that isn't all, as it also opens up potential to replace #GRUB with modern #bootloader options like #rEFInd or #SystemDBoot, at least for my #UEFI machines.

It would be great to have a something like a "Open Multi-boot Native Interface", OMNI, to replace #GRUB.

I'm asking to basically marry GRUB with #rEFInd, and bring things like multi-kernel or OCI support dead simple rather thant bound to the terminal.

One full week under the keel running Alpine Linux on my primary workstation. Even set root on a ZFS mirror - simple to setup. First experience with rEFInd as well - I like it.

Sharp and snappy, just like the way I like my cars! Ha!

No new revelations compared to the first few weeks on the test workstation... I'm still tweaking some things for personalization as it happens but all good.

The Alpine repos are full of good stuff and are current/up2date in a practical manner.

The only flatpaks I've had to run are Waterfox, Signal Desktop and messing around with the new CoMaps Linux version (this exists - happy! happy! joy! joy!).

I'm going to migrate my Debian Bookworm servers to Alpine when I get around to the upgrades. I'll keep clients on Debian for the foreseeable future.

I'm not sure why I'm so excited about Alpine, it just feels like a breathe of fresh air! Modern and simple. Enjoying it.

Still playing with the Framework 12 laptops.

So yesterday evening, I installed Haiku. Strangely enough I had to install using the beta5 iso, as installing with the 3 latest nightly isos just failed 🤔
However, after the successful installation, upgrading to the latest nightly just worked fine 🤷‍♀️

The system is installed in UEFI mode in dual boot with Pop OS and using rEFInd as a boot manager.

Now some observation about Haiku on the Framework 12:
* While in the live environment during installation the trackpad works, once Haiku is installed and booted, it does not work 😪
* The WiFi is working contrary to the installation on my Thinkpad T450 😀

Así receta corta de todo esto:

1. Install macOS, bigSur in my case
2. Create new partitions from macOS.
3. Install Ubuntu indicating that the boot will go on the root partition / not on the disk.
4. The system reboots directly into Ubuntu.
5. I installed rEFInd from deb package.
6. Now start the rEFInd and let me choose.

I switched to a distribution that is installed “bare” and empty (Void Linux), so nothing needs to be deleted. You need to:

1. Replace the bootloader with #rEFInd;

2. Remove unnecessary firmware;

3. Install the necessary fonts, as this system has a problem displaying them;

4. Install the nVidia driver;

5. Install #ChronyD;

6. Install #OctoXBPS — a package manager similar to Synaptic;

7. Install #VSV (Void Service Manager) to manage #runit services;

8. Install #zram;

9. Connect additional repositories;

10. Install application software

Описание ситуации После обычного обновления Arch Linux с помощью pacman (хотя чаще я обновляюсь с помощью yay), система обновила ядро, и загрузчик rEFInd начал выдавать ошибку:

UEFI оказалась не такой уж и сложной технологией.

Оказывается, можно просто создать раздел FAT32 с типом ef, сделать его активным, создать там папку EFI, а в ней BOOT. И положить туда grubx64.efi переименовав его в bootx64.efi. И при перезагрузке прошивка EFI материнской платы сама найдёт этот раздел, залезет в папку EFI/BOOT и загрузит и запустит bootx64.efi. И появится командная строка GRUB2.

Если подложить в правильное место grub.cfg, то появится меню, а не командная строка.

Поскольку я использовал для экспериментов GRUB из ubuntu, то в нём был захардкожен путь /EFI/ubuntu. Соответственно, туда и пришлось класть grub.cfg и grubenv (для удобства).

Но это при условии, если в NVRAM переменные BOOT001, BOOT002 и т.д. отсутствуют или ведут к несуществующим или поломанным загрузчикам. UEFI в первую очередь пытается загрузить файлы загрузчики из этих переменных.

Можно ещё распаковать в EFI раздел rEFInd, который может загружать разные операционные системы в режиме EFI. А поскольку он основывается на GRUB2, тоже умеет напрямую грузить ядро linux.

With tomorrow's offal meal she should be able to start coding!

Just bought a 1 TB SSD to put 6 OSes on my #Thinkpad: Debian-Testing (#Gnome / #XFce), #Mint, #ElementaryOS, #POP_OS alpha, #Kubuntu or #Fedora KDE (haven't decided which one of the two), and if it works with it, #Haiku.

I'd normally install #FreeBSD too, but I don't see it working as well as a desktop.

I'll be booting them with #rEFInd instead of #grub (easier than dealing with its rather deprecated os-prober).
