  1. 🚀 My CachyOS (Arch based) setup script using the Fish shell. Saves so much time when doing full system installs!

Installs yay, core/AUR apps, NFS mounts, auto-update, and more!

Adapt as needed for your network and package preferences.

Tip: Rename the script from .txt to .fish for direct use with Fish shell.

  7. Yeah I'm just vibin now on osu. Controller's got a few problems but I'll fix it in the future.

Kinda sleepy but anyways should I play Ultimate Custom Night and torture myself?

  11. #linux #linuxgaming project update
My mother is beginning testing a #linuxmint laptop as her daily driver while taking notes about issues. It's been 4 days and I haven't received a call about any issues.

I finally killed the dragon and got windows off the new gaming lappy and got #pop_os installed successfully and relatively smoothly. HAving to access the bios form within Windows via recovery because the BIOS was locked out from boot (F12 failed to work) to turn off Secure UEFI was the biggest fight.

Getting the apps set up so far has been smooth. I need to do a little more with some technical side apps for video capture and editing on there.

I need to check in with my buddy rocking the #cachyOS box used for lighter gaming (stock business desktop graphics from 3 years ago) and internet browsing and see how that's going.

    There is good forward progress.

  12. Ok, it is kind of funny that I compiled #linux-7.0.6-cachyos on my #gentoo laptop workstation yesterday to patch that nasty #dirtyfrag CVE, but the virtual machine with an actual #cachyos I run casually is still on 7.0.5 😂

Yeah, I wonder if Hombrew is used much at all on Linux.

Oh, I just remembered I was going to include cygwin's SETUP.EXE as a package manager (as it technically IS!) XD

Of course, this #blost was 1 hour's work, not 10, so it's pretty off the cuff and subjective ;)

I did skew heavily towards installation speed, and not just download speed, though. I wouldn't criticize an OS for not being able to afford crazy fast mirrors.

I posted the number of available packages for Debian (#RasPiOS), Arch (#CachyOS), and FreeBSD in this thread: https://polymaths.social/@rl_dane/statuses/01KRDSHN77A1505JP0VRXFC5BR

Package rollbacks would be a filesystem and OS-level feature, no? Like snapper on Linux and the boot environment selector (with ZFS) in #FreeBSD.

  19. I’m increasingly noticing how CachyOS is slowly but surely becoming my preferred Linux distribution for all my activities outside of gaming. 🤔😅

Mint, as a Linux distribution, not only feels slower but also demonstrably delivers fewer FPS when gaming. 🙄

I might switch completely to CachyOS and delete Mint after all, as I currently see no need for two separate operating systems on my PC, especially since I deleted Windows for good and definitely! 😉

Maybe I'll become a admirer of arch after all and one day in the future will do my own raw install of it instead of using easier Distribution based on it. 😁

  22. More thoughts on #CachyOS...

    • btrfs has some noticeable hesitancy at times, even on a fairly fast (8th gen i5) machine
    • if you're (understandably) avoiding the AUR, the proper pacman archives feel a bit slim at times:
    rld@prometheus:~$ pacman -Ss |grep "^[^ ]" |cut -f1 -d' ' |cut -f2 -d/ |sort -u |wc -l
    16057

-- compare with #Debian (actually RasPiOS, in this case) --

    $ for x in {a..z}; do apt-cache search $x; done |cut -f1 -d' ' |sort -u |wc -l
    74416

(Not sure if that's accurate, but #DistroWatch says Debian has over 50,000, and Wikipedia says almost 70,000)

    • I've had to come up with a couple bespoke "daemons," one to refresh the xrdb every 10 seconds (NO idea why xrdb forgets everything so often on this box), and one to refresh the keyboard brightness (I use symlinks in my home directory for this) every two seconds, so that it retains the setting after resuming from sleep.
UID PID PPID C STIME TTY TIME CMD
    rld 8035 1 0 May11 ? 00:00:00 sh -c while xrdb < ~/.Xdefaults; do sleep 10; done
    rld 25572 1 0 04:19 ? 00:00:01 sh -c while grep -om1 [0-9] .kbd_backlight |tr -dc 0-9 > ~/.kbd_backlight-sys; do sleep 2; done

    rld@prometheus:~$ file .kbd*
    .kbd_backlight: ASCII text
    .kbd_backlight-sys: symbolic link to /sys/class/leds/tpacpi::kbd_backlight/brightness
    rld@prometheus:~$ grep . .kbd*
    .kbd_backlight:2
    .kbd_backlight-sys:2

  23. Spent the day installing #CachyOS on my BF's laptop. Picked LXDE as desktop environment.

We had issues with #Linux Mint XFCE that was performing very poorly when running the one steam game he wants to play.

Hopefully Cachy is as lightweight as they advertise and this time around, #Pharaoh (remastered) will work just as well as on Windows 10, if not better.

  24. Really impressed with , the new package manager for that is now the default on . It is crazy fast! The only thing I wish it did was to queue the installation of Flatpaks the way it does for repo apps so they install all at once instead of one at a time.

I also installed it on Fives, my HP laptop running , and it works great there as well. Still gonna’ use garuda-update for updates, though, just in case.

  29. @CachyOS one question about #mullvad binary, is it normal that it does not seem to be updated ?

Does the maintener / script in chage to update it failed or is busy ?
