@pnadigital ich bin auf einen #Kobo umgestiegen. Im Moment lese ich da noch ein paar alte Bücher, die ich schon habe aber ich muss mir langsam über Nachschub Gedanken machen. Idealerweise Anbieter, bei denen ich EPUB Dateien kaufen und herunterladen kann. Die kann ich dann über #Calibre auf meinen Kobo laden. Das müssten natürlich Anbieter sein, bei denen die Lizenz das hergibt. Heutzutage kauft man ja keine Bücher mehr, sondern nur noch die Lizenz, sie zu lesen.

Yes, via #Calibre , using the EPUB version of the manuscripts.

I find it useful to determine how large the word count of my "Master Volume" is - the collection of all the German folk tales I have translated so far (currently, it's at 723,482 words). For my book manuscripts, the word count gives a useful gauge how long they will be in comparison to my previous books.

Time for a Come to Jeebus moment: I will never get along with #calibre ebook management.

It's an incredible, capable, venerable piece of software, and my partially blind ass just continuously gets gut punched by its interface hard and often enough that I spent a chunk of this evening picking apart the broken bits of 5 separate Calibre libraries I've tried to maintain over time. All failed.

So, I now have a sanely curated set of named folders on my NAS for ebooks:

I am pleased with this arrangement.

Sometimes (often?) a nicely arranged #UNIX filesystem is chefs kiss perfect!

Currently, I'm struggling with the horrible 90s developer-only user interface of #Calibre, the #OPDS capabilities and general #UX of 10y+ old iOS apps (or even new ones like @getbookshelves), and how reading progress syncing just isn't an option anywhere.

Am I missing something, or is that what's currently out there?

So what's an alternative to Calibre that lets me organize epubs, edit the metadata, and copy them to my Kobo? I see lots of epub readers, but I almost never read them on my laptop.

I think the Kobo Clara BW just shows up as a USB device, so that might not be a feature I need. Maybe I can just organize them in directories…

Note that I don't want a server of any kind or something that only runs in Docker.

I just bought my first ebook outside of the Amazon 'ecosystem'! Tracey Nicholls' An Ethics of Improvisation.

It was *much more expensive* than on Amazon, but we all know how Amazon keeps their prices so incredibly low, therefore supporting an EU-based infrastructure felt like doing the right thing.

So far it seems a wonderful book.

So, #Amazon's decision to remove #ebook #downloads on Feb. 26th has had an effect on me that I think is a bit on the surprising side.... Not only did I downlaod all of my books this weekend, but I also downloaded (neaarly) all the books I had on the Google Play Books, and finally got #Calibre working on my system.

I have, however, encountered an odd situation with Play Books that I wonder if anyone has encountered (if anyone is actually using Play Books). The situation: a long time ago (around 10 years), I uploaded a bunch of DRM free ePubs of technical books (mostly O'Reily books) to read on my tablet... It was the easiest option at the time.

Now, however, I can't download them. Whenever I try to download them I get a 404 page from Google. The weird part: I can still open them in the reader both on the web and the Android app.

I wonder if anyone else has encountered this issue, and if they found a workaround or fix for the issue?
