    Wenn man u.a. Geräte wie #Chromecast im Netz hat, dann merkt man schnell das diese viel...sehr viel per Multicast reden. Die einen blocken es und ich fange sie auf mit dem #mDNS Dienst. Auch bekannt als #ZeroConf, #Avahi oder #bonjour

  10. Beim Installieren des mDNS‑Plugins bemerkte ich nicht, dass #Unbound #DNS ausfiel; im Log erschien „…Pipe kann nicht ausgeführt werden…“. Nach Installation von AdGuard stellte sich heraus, dass Port 5353 für #mDNS reserviert ist. Ich änderte den Unbound‑Port und trug Unbound als Upstream‑DNS in AdGuard ein — damit war das Problem behoben.

    #Traefik läuft nun im #homelab auf dem #raspberrypi und so ganz nebenbei werden die Hostnamen via #mnds #avahi #zeroconf im local net verteilt. Dank #docker labels. Genauer gesagt: die traefik host regeln werden dafür wiederverwendet ...

  17. Has anyone ever tried if #systemd timesyncd can somehow use #mDNS to get a NTP server for time synchronization? I know that resolved can query mDNS but I need a DNS-SD entry via mDNS which would signal the existence of a NTP server without knowing the exact hostname in advance. Unfortunately I can't influence DHCP etc. to set this...

    I have originally reported this one. See the answers of CUPS author Michael Sweet. He has developed primarily under Mac OS (BSD-based) which uses mdnsresponder (Not Avahi as in Linux) where the problem does not occur, seems in CUPS' Avahi support.

    Set as milestone for first CUPS 2.5.x release.

    Слышали ли вы жалобы на то, что принтеры, подключённые к сети по Wi-Fi, работают очень ненадёжно? Принтер может без проблем печатать большую часть времени, но когда он вам срочно понадобился, ОС не может его найти и он оказывается недоступен?.. Или, может быть, смартфон, который бесперебойно вещал видео на Chromecast в телевизоре ещё 10 минут назад, теперь не может найти его в домашней сети? В прошлом году я потратил немало времени на диагностику и устранение загадочных проблем с протоколами автообнаружения по Wi-Fi. Разные настройки, разные Wi-Fi-роутеры, разные ОС и устройства, но основная проблема едина: всё, что использует автообнаружение, работает недостаточно стабильно и в самый нужный момент попросту ломается.

  22. has one important limitation on multicast resolution. It expects host has only one important address on AF. At least that is offered by simple protocol used by nss-mdns. It cannot send multiple addresses on single name. That is often wrong. Is there potential contributor able to design fix for that?

  23. long term, I'm definitely gonna have to give up on #mDNS and get a real DNS resolution solution implemented.

    * mDNS .local hostnames can't be resolved on OpenWrt devices at all, and there are no plans to implement it

    * they also can't be resolved on Android, at least not the version I'm running

    * the aforementioned problem of mDNS resolution going away and not coming back after certain types of network disruptions

  24. complaint: #Avahi #mDNS has a tendency to completely implode and go AWOL for very long periods of time due to certain types of network disruptions, and it's a giant pain in the ass and a huge disincentive to relying on it

    I really need to get my next generation network arch figured out, including internal name resolution, but it's a quicksand topic for my brain for some reason

  25. Roon Discovery erfolgreich von mDNS auf DNS-basierte Erkennung migriert – lokale Overrides in Unbound definiert, Firewall-Regeln angepasst, Logging aktiviert. Multicast eliminiert, DNS-Transparenz und Segmentkontrolle sichergestellt. Portöffnungen auf ein Mindestmaß reduziert. ROON Server und alle Endpoints werden nun ohne mDNS zuverlässig erkannt und das Streaming funktioniert reibungslos in Richtung aller Endpoints.

And in other other news, I thought I was going to have to spend this weekend and to try to see why one of my VMs (and only one of them) was being so stupidly slow and unstable after I got a new DSL modem, but (touch wood) it seems to have magically stabilised. Hurrah! Yes, that means that the problem was definitely , and that it will come back and bite me again in the future, but it works now so I don't care.

  28. @socketwench ah right - so where I left mDNS I was working out how to write nftables rules that would force any outbound traffic back to localhost to the systemd-resolved stub, which I could THEN enforce prioritizing mDNS responses, but also mDNS isn't kindof a closed and done thing like DNS is, it can just kinda, hang open for a but waiting for replies to the broadcast, and slowing everything down.

    ...yea I didn't get as far as investigating mDNS caching before this smelled awful

  29. Considering the issue of the state of #DNS resolution on #Linux again, I don't think anyone got it quite right so far:
    * Going through NSS's host database is pluggable, and the #mDNS plugin can convey zone identifiers as needed, but it will only query A/AAAA records and no TLSA, SVCB or TXT records.
    * Contacting a loopback resolver like systemd-resolved allows any query and is extensible (unless maimed by #Debian), but you can't convey zone identifiers over that.

  30. Anyone else having trouble with Nanoleafs in Home Assistant?

    Having two Nanoleafs: 1 Hexagon Shapes and 1 Lines. Since a couple of weeks (obviously I dont know what (I) changed... I would say: nothing 🤣), they dont work anymore via Home Assistant (and their own App).

    My Access Point still says, they are connected via wifi without any trouble. ICMP Echo Requesting them, works fine (dont know which service I could check).

    Thing is, out of the sudden, Home Assistant thinks, they are reachable via IPv6 (some ULA Address, not my IPv6 and that Subnet even doesnt have IPv6).

    That Home Assistant Issue pointed me to mDNS: github.com/home-assistant/core

    Home Assistant seems to use github.com/milanmeu/aionanoleaf library which doesnt correctly parse IPv6/Port things.

    Im wondering, if anyone else having some strange behavior with Nanoleaf and mDNS in their network?

    Just trying to figure out whats going on and it doesnt look like its only a bad library in Home Assistant (there is definitely a Bug in parsing IPv6 addresses) but some Nanoleaf Network Issues. As I mentioned: Nanoleafs sometimes doesnt report their IPv4 Address via mDNS - but still are reachble via ICMP.
