Anyone had luck running lesser-known operating systems (i.e #HaikuOS or #9front ) on Chromebooks?
I brought home a HP Chromebook 14 G5 (codename SNAPPY) from ewaste, and I'd like to see what's possible before it ends up being another Linux or Windows 10 system.
specs are:
- Celeron N3350
- 4GB of RAM
- don't care about the eMMC storage, since I'm okay with using a flush-fit USB drive
I've already installed the MrChromebox UEFI, and I'm especially curious about shoehorning CSMwrap and a MS-DOS/FreeDOS boot floppy into the firmware.

If you have some kind of device running #Android with keyboard+mouse input, you too will likely enjoy the changes as you should be able to likewise disable all touch-specific code too! The Android version still has some compiled out code for desktop-y concepts like window handling so your mileage may vary however.
...I'm also not sure how commonplace it is to have an Android device with non-touchscreen input. If you're on Chrome OS our typical recommendation is to install Principia inside of the Crostini Linux container. Or do as I did, flash the bootloader with Coreboot and install regular Linux onto it!

Linux on a Chromebook, my favorite way
-
#Chrultrabook people, I have a #Chromebook and a #Chromebox that run #MrChromebox' #coreboot and I would like to update the firmware.
Currently I use a live USB with #LinuxMint XFCE, as it is easy to use and insecure enough for it to work.
The tools need access to read and write the firmware, which is quite deep.
I would like to enable that support on my main #NixOS system, at least sometimes, but don't know what is missing. Same on vanilla #Fedora btw, doesnt work there either.
The iomem=relaxed option is not enough, do you know what else is needed?
For NixOS and Chromebook support I found this amazing repo, but it is quite complex:

How hard would it be to adapt an SD card to fit into an eMMC?
+ both use the same protocol
+ would make life easier for users who don't have microSD slots on their phones, #postmarketos / #mobian / #chrultrabook developers and those who wish to change OS without reflashing
- high-capacity cards, like the 500GB one in my illustration, would probably confuse the bootloaders of most devices
- slight concerns about signal integrity
Same goes for actively adapting SATA/NVME to UFS.
Not an electronics engineer, just some guy with a dream and a crude drawing.

Got Alpine BusyBox/Linux working. It's very fast on my poor hardware. Sway and Waybar are using almost completely default settings.

Here's something the fedi will enjoy... I got #linux running on my old chromebook!
This is my first plunge into running/tinkering with Linux, and I was a bit scared (especially flashing custom firmware to run Coreboot) but the process proved easier than expected. Thanks to the #chrultrabook project, Mr Chromebox for the custom firmware, and @vkc for your instructional video; all helped ease my nerves.

Slowly getting into the #Chrultrabook scene (I have quite a few Chromebooks that have been languishing about). However, I've hit a snag. I need to remove this screw on my Caroline board and...how do I do that? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've had this little Chromebook that I bought for cheap for a while. When I moved to Linux, the audio wouldn't work. For a long time, that was fine, but I finally got around to building a custom kernel, as the excellent chrultrabook project mentions. It all works now!
After compiling on a better machine, I simply transferred the Linux kernel image, made the initrd, and copied over the modules. I updated the bootloader config, and then the audio worked after restarting.
I actually started this process before the chrultrabook project existed, or at least before I knew about them, but honestly, they're a great crew. I'm so glad for all the work and contributions everyone has made to it. It's great to have the documentation and all the helpful scripts to get the keyboard and audio working!
Great to have a little machine to take in the car and library that I don't have to fret about. Check them out if you're interested in something similar: https://docs.chrultrabook.com/

Well, this is a weird picture, but at least my PC setup is comfy now.

Well, that worked. My old and slightly tired Chromebook is now enjoying a second youth as a dapper Linux laptop, running Pop!_OS. My favourite distro Kubuntu turned out to be a bit too much for it.
Why not resuscitate your own Chromebook? It was easier than I thought it would be.

Hello Linux users with a #Framework laptop or a #Chromebook modded with #chrultrabook. I am seeking testers for setting battery charge thresholds and recalibration with TLP.

Updated my #chrultrabook to #Fedora 41 aaand my sound is gone. Tried to install the current version from https://github.com/WeirdTreeThing/chromebook-linux-audio but that didn't help either.
Looks like I have debugging homework for the weekend.

Recently I have been trying to blog more, mostly going through the dozens of post ideas & incomplete drafts and actually finishing them.
One of the newly published posts is about me and @kittynunu turning a #Chromebook into a #Chrultrabook by flashing #Coreboot onto it.

CW: tech bs, laptop troubles
I think my acer chromebook (chrultrabooked cp713-3w) has died. The charge light doesn't turn on when i apply power to either of the usb-c ports.
If anyone has any troubleshooting tips or schematics so i can know my laptop isn't dead dead, please get in touch.
please boost for visibility

Doing an experiment: No phone, just a small laptop. Put #Fedora #GNU + #Linux on a #Chromebook. Going to be using it for all my computing needs, including phone calls. Trying this for a month. #Minimalism #SimpleLiving #FreeSoftware #SoftwareLibre #Chrultrabook
I was going to use my #ThinkPad X200 but it is not conducive to travel: The battery doesn't last long, and it is bulky/fragile. Chromebooks are nice and thin, and cheap.

@kaievans Keyd looks to be the only thing that'll remap the search key on chromebooks. With it I can finally change the search key to control.

Today my new most powerful Chromebook arrived..
This thing has a 10th gen i7 (4c4t), 16GBs of DDR4 RAM, a 256GB NVMe SSD, function/language and delete key, and even a WWAN slot👀
Submarined it, installed Ultramarine Linux GNOME edition, and it runs it beautifully
The Chromebook itself is a ‘Dell Latitude 7410 Chrome’ code named ‘Drallion.’
Oddly enough, there isn’t a ‘chrome’ or ‘Chromebook’ branding on the back/top, it feels like a windows laptop that they threw chromeOS onto last minute😂#tech #chromebook #chrultrabook #ultramarinelinux #ultramarineanywhere #foss #linux #fyralabs

That was it (disconnecting the battery from the mb side not the other way around). Now I'm rocking #fedora 40 with #coreboot on the Asus CX5 #chromebook that I got cheap from Ebay with a broken screen. Thanks to #Chrultrabook and #mrchromebox 💾🏆 Saved from ending up on an e-waste pile, I imagine. Fedora is screaming fast on this machine too 🤩

I already disabled the big main battery and booted up to run the #chrultrabook rom flashing script but then it says that it's still write protected so it's obviously not the big battery that they're referring to when talking about a CR50 battery for motherboards. This is frustrating...
