Today’s experiment with #ElementaryOS in a VM (yes I know), you have to disable secure boot, choose a Hyper-V gen 2 type, then yes you can choose manual partitioning so as to have a non-LVM based install. A small fat32 boot/efi partition; a big ext4 root partition followed by a small swap. Create them with GParted, choose them from the chooser and assign mount points and opt to format… and off we go! No LVM. Will make the inevitable later resize when I run out of space easier.

@elementary Hi! I recently installed your OS on an old A1224 model iMac for the purposes of audio recording. I'm typing from it right now, and it's working well so far, but I have a couple questions. The two big ones are as follows:

• The external drives I use for saving project files and holding media don't mount automatically when the computer boots, and aren't even detected unless I unplug them and plug them back in, after which I still have to open them in Files to mount them properly. I have a feeling this is due to the external USB hub I'm using, which is large enough to require it's own power source. If detection of the SSDs is based around them powering on alongside the computer, that'd be an issue since the drives are constantly powered from the wall. I'll plug them in directly and restart the computer to test this if that works, but if I quit out now I'll lose what I've typed. lol

• I use a Behringer U-phoria UMC1820 interface for recording, and that causes issues that aren't unique to Elementary, but are harder to troubleshoot on it. Due to the way it informs Linux (PulseAudio or PipeWire, whichever part of the chain it directly talks to) of it's inputs and outputs, it causes oddly specific issues. I think it's best if I detail how this issue behaved on Linux Mint, the previous distro I used for recording, and then how Elementary differs slightly.
  Mint succeeds in detecting the UMC1820 and lets it be selected in it's sound settings. However, due to the interface itself labeling all of it's ins and outs as "auxiliary" something, the computer has no clear "left" and "right" channels to use as defaults. Mint assumes that the first two "aux" outs are the default left and right, which is correct, and aside from a couple bugs I couldn't get around in specific software, it still works as normal.
  Elementary detects the interface but doesn't list it as an option in it's sound settings, I can only imagine because there are technically no default outputs to… list. I was only able to make it output through the device by installing PulseAudio Volume Control and selecting it there, resulting in NO options being selected in the dedicated sound settings, and the options in the upper right corner of the screen incorrectly stating I was outputting through the built-in speakers.
  I was worried it would switch back once I rebooted, and thankfully this isn't the case, but I thought you should be made aware of this issue so that maybe, if nothing else, the weird interface could at least be shown under sound settings proper. I've given up on trying to "label" the correct outputs as "left" and "right" instead of aux 0 or 1 or whatever, that's likely a PulseAudio issue and a lost cause.

Daunting as that second one is to explain, I promise it's not a huge deal and I AM able to record and play back sound regardless. It just would have been really confused and concerned if I hadn't had prior experience with Mint, and knew that I could likely fix the issue by using other Pulse tools.

Thank you for making software that's ethical and anti-LLM. I thought the whole FOSS scene would be more against AI slop, but it's hard to find an OS that stands against that tech-bro garbage, let alone software to use on it. I appreciate it so very much.

Just got an old iMac running on @elementary!! I think it might become the new main rig for my recording studio, I just have to get in there and clean out all the dust. It hasn't been cleaned in the almost 15 years its existed, but after that I bet it has enough power to be a great music making machine. I'll finally have a rig dedicated to it!

Does anyone actually use #ElementaryOS? I have tried numerous times to install and failed all but once. Then the one time I succeeded, I couldn't get Japanese input to work, so gave up and installed Zorin. Isn't the whole concept of Elementary OS to be...elementary? As in, usable by elementary school children? Still so annoyed that I gave these people money for an OS I am unable to use.

Playing around with Elementary OS, and am in awe of how beautiful the experience is so far compared with stock Ubuntu. An ARM64-supporting apt-based distro 👌

They do, strangely, discourage trying it out by asking for voluntary payment, you can enter zero and donate later though.

I need help with my Linux Mint installation, if anyone can lend a hand. I posted more details on the Mint forums here: https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?p=2802067
Long story short, I installed an update yesterday that has locked me out of my machine, at least in any usable form. All files are seemingly intact, but I can't even input anything properly now and I think my install is a loss. I just want to get my files back so I can reinstall Mint or another OS. I did choose to encrypt my drive on install, which isn't a problem so long as I have a place to input the password… Which I don't anymore.

I am currently running elementaryOS from a USB stick, trying to see if I can somehow access anything from THERE. Any help is greatly appreciated. <3

Ich habe hier 2-3 alte MacBooks rumliegen auf die ich ein Linux kopieren könnte.

Ich scheitere aber letztlich immer am WLAN Support. Die Treiber für diverse in MacBooks verbaute Chips sind offenbar proprietär und sehr schwer zu bekommen.
Die empfohlenen Methoden (aus macOS extrahieren) kriege ich nicht hin.
Ich bin jetzt soweit, Distries nicht mehr nach Interesse (z.b. Kali oder #ElementaryOS) auszusuchen, sondern danach, ob ich hinterher ein funkionierendes Gerät mit WLAN habe.

Vorschläge?

#elementaryOS and #GNOME devs are not in the business of forever supporting every conceivable MS Windows feature by default.

As there is a sandboxing-compatible (and Wayland-compatible) FreeDesktop API for background apps (tray icons or not) nowadays, apps that do not use it yet need to get on with the program.

I went ahead and reported https://github.com/nextcloud/desktop/issues/10162 for your NextCloud app case (I never had to use it, as I use GNOME Online Accounts' built-in NextCloud provider).

I managed to go through all parts of the system settings without mouse, install pending updates and reboot ✌️
The install experience was so-so: after installing the user account appeared deactivated (reboot fixed it but without a mouse I had to ctrl-alt-F1 to a console and reboot from the command line). Airplane mode shows as activated (maybe because the mini PC has neither bluetooth nor wifi?)
But I love the look of #elementaryOS even though some fonts are very tiny.

Dropdowns don't highlight the currently selected option without a mouse.

It’s been a week and I’ve had so little time to even get basic things setup that just work out of the box in Fedora/gnome and elementaryOS/pantheon.

Spent a few hours tonight just trying to get the scaling to NOT be 125%. All the settings for #niri were set correctly to defaults at scaling factor of 1.

Looks like this is the same issue I have in Gnome where it picks up my resolution and automatically scales me up to 125%. Difference here is Gnome surfaces that setting in displays and you can quickly fix it. It is not surfaced as a setting anywhere to see in the cachy/niri settings.

I had to do the following and apparently I need to script this to do this every reboot as it’s not persistent. Shout out to a random forum post for the tidbit.

gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.interface scaling-factor 1
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.interface text-scaling-factor 1.1
wlr-randr --output eDP-1 --scale 1

So far I’m not actually hitting anything CachyOS specific and just getting used to Niri. I do like Niri so far. I need to tweak some settings (like getting to the app launcher via Super). I’m not sure if I like how many options there are so far though.

I’m not a UI ricer and enjoy the simplicity and sane defaults of #elementaryos and #gnome but I do have those on my main systems to fall back to while I play with this.
