Yeah, back to Fedora and Gnome. As nice as Cachy and Niri and Noctalia are, I just work too much with other RHEL systems daily to make this workflow change right now. It’s been a week and I’ve had so little time to even get basic things setup that just work out of the box in Fedora/gnome and elementaryOS/pantheon.

Spent a few hours tonight just trying to get the scaling to NOT be 125%. All the settings for #niri were set correctly to defaults at scaling factor of 1.
Looks like this is the same issue I have in Gnome where it picks up my resolution and automatically scales me up to 125%. Difference here is Gnome surfaces that setting in displays and you can quickly fix it. It is not surfaced as a setting anywhere to see in the cachy/niri settings.
I had to do the following and apparently I need to script this to do this every reboot as it’s not persistent. Shout out to a random forum post for the tidbit.
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.interface scaling-factor 1
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.interface text-scaling-factor 1.1
wlr-randr --output eDP-1 --scale 1So far I’m not actually hitting anything CachyOS specific and just getting used to Niri. I do like Niri so far. I need to tweak some settings (like getting to the app launcher via Super). I’m not sure if I like how many options there are so far though.
I’m not a UI ricer and enjoy the simplicity and sane defaults of #elementaryos and #gnome but I do have those on my main systems to fall back to while I play with this.

In Elementary OS, accessibility setting is easy to reach. The display setting includes color deficiency assistance for people who need it.

Elementary OS shows the connected headphone battery status alongside the device battery. It is a nice feature that I very much appreciate on the operating system.

I have a question for all #elementaryos users:
Is it me or Code (io.elementary.code) is actually too much for a simple notepad-like application? I miss gedit, but it doesn't fit into what I see as the elementary way to do things.
I started learning Vala, noticed that I needed a bit more experience to do what I wanted to do, and began writing my own Notepad-like application, that's why I want to know.

If you're on Elementary OS, use simply-foxy to "fix" the ugly Firefox browser window because it doesn't look suitable with Elementary OS.

12 hours of intensive work, a bit of tampering with my local LLM to automate repeated tasks, and my fork of Melody has finally started with no errors.
I decided to rename it because if a translation file hasn't been accepted to Melody 6 years ago, this complete rewrite to Gtk4 and Adwaita will never make it.
The new name? White Noise. It's not Melody, but it's soothing.

Anyway, I'm ready to give up on this distro. They obviously don't take Japanese users seriously, despite having a Japanese version of their site online. The main appeal for me was the similarity to the Mac OS UI, but using Zorin on another device (on which I can input Japanese easily), I found that Zorin has grown on me. Has anyone else found that Elementary OS works fine if you don't try to change anything, but if you do try to change something it breaks easily? Japanese input does not work out of the box. No matter how I tweaked the settings, I simply could not input Japanese. So I searched and found a page by a Japanese user describing their convoluted path to Japanese input. When I copied what they did, not only can I still not input Japanese, but notifications are broken, too. #ElementaryOS #日本語入力

@ct_Magazin es ist doch wie mit allem. Welcher Mensch braucht auch allen Ernstes alle zwei Jahre ein neues Handy, nur weil der Vertrag abläuft? Vor einigen Jahren konnte man gebrauchte Rechner kaum nutzen, aber die aktuelleren Geräte sind auch nach einiger Zeit im Einsatz noch zweite Hand prima zu gebrauchen. #windows ? Was ist das? 😅

When I install Elementary OS, I have a thought of using "sudo apt install synaptic" so I can download and install packages through Synaptic Package Manager (like I used to love doing on my previous distro). However, after using eOS for a while and still not doing that, I start to think of "just because I can, doesn't mean I should" and I don't do that. Elementary OS already feels like it is designed this way. Packages only acceptable through AppCenter and Flathub (at least if being done through the official distro package manager that is called as "AppCenter").
I wonder about how the "Background Apps" being identified. I wonder if this is somehow related to the acceptable apps (from AppCenter and Flathub repositories). Do apps being shown on the "Background Apps" are already identified apps from these two "official" means? Also, as a matter of habit, I still reguarly do "sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade" and "flatpak update" on the terminal. I do that reguarly to keep my system updated and I rarely use the package manager "AppCenter" to check for updates. Therefore, as a thought of experimentation, I wonder if it is possible to use "sudo apt synaptic", and use Synaptic exclusively to install and manage packages. Will doing this have any effect on the stability of Pantheon desktop or the Elementary OS? Will it still functional if I use Synpatic exclusively and not using the AppCenter? This is just a thought, but I'm not doing this right now.
The thing that I love about Elementary OS and Patheon desktop is the ability of the system that "knows" what sort of front-end GUI apps that is running in the background... I keep wondering how Elementary identifies these apps. Is it the ability of the distro (Elementary OS) or the desktop (Pantheon DE)?
