Heute mal wieder zwei Stunden damit verbracht, meine i3-Config zu tunen, statt zu arbeiten. Aber hey: jetzt öffnet sich mein Terminal mit Super+Return in genau der richtigen Größe auf dem zweiten Monitor. Produktivität ist eben Definitionssache. ☕

Falls jemand fragt: Ja, ich nutze Arch. Nein, ich erzähl's nicht ungefragt – nur in Tröts.

I've never used tiling window managers like i3 (https://i3wm.org/) or awesome (https://awesomewm.org/) on my workstations. Perhaps I'm wrong, and I should definitely give them a try and always use them in the future. But for several years now, I've been using a different compromise: instead of tiling the entire screen, I tile the space only in the terminal using tmux and this config (https://github.com/gpakosz/.tmux).

Goddamn that brave search "AI" thingy knows what distro and wm I use. It also knows what kernel I use sometimes, lol. I switch around vanilla and cachy every system update.

I had been on #i3wm over Ubuntu for maybe five years, maybe more. Last month I bought a new laptop and decided it was time to move to Wayland because, well, it's the future and, like when Python 3 replaced Python 2, there's no point in staying where I feel comfortable.

The initial plan was installing #Sway over #Tuxedo OS, but I found that I could not use it as I was using i3, so I have been trying the default #KDE #Plasma over the past weeks. It looks like it will become my home 🙂

I took advantage of Easter Monday Bank Holiday to wipe Void Linux off my daily driver laptop and now it's running FreeBSD 15.0-p5.

Moved all the various bits and pieces back and got i3 working solidly on xorg. I'm not sure if I'm going back to KDE. The xorg keymaps work great for my Keychron K3 Pro keyboard (US int'l layout) and I have a shell script that I run that detects the external monitors and enables them as needed.

Won't have Steam on it as that seems to not work with my games but that's OK. I'm kinda burned out from gaming.

I will be making a bhyve vm for OpenBSD so I can update the ports I maintain.

Has anyone encountered a bug with #i3wm where you can't click or type into a window on a workspace until you select another workspace and then go back to it?

Also had an odd issue where if I switch away it doesn't always make the window go away.

I’m thinking of switching away from Debian because of all the systemd AI garbage code. Are there any good alternative distributions that don't rely on systemd and aren't full of AI code? The only things that matter to me are that I can still use X11 and i3wm.

Maybe void Linux and runit are an option. I have to look into that.

Tem sido uma experiência interessante configurar o #swaywm. Minha primeira experiência com WM foi com o #i3wm há muito tempo e usei por pouco tempo.

Eine Reihe von #Linux Distros habe ich jetzt ausprobiert und letztlich entschieden, nochmal #Manjaro in der #i3wm Version eine Chance zu geben. Seit Stunden richte ich es nun ein. Sogar zur #tty musste ich zwischendurch wechseln, weil ich mir 'nen Knoten gebastelt hatte. Langsam nimmt das ganze aber Gesicht an. Ist bis jetzt "nur" das Notebook, was dafür herhalten muss. Damit hat sich #ArchLinux doch wieder gegen #Debian durchgesetzt. So sei es dann eben…

@rainer Jedes DE hat einen window-manager ( argh fühlt sich komisch an).
Am Ende nutzt jeder ein DE, auch die Leute welche so was wie sway nutzen.
Unter #X11 war das noch etwas einfacher da dort weniger Abhängigkeiten zu bestimmten Protokollen da sind. Mit #Wayland ist das wieder anders du kannst nur verwenden was kompatibel bzw. tun was erlaubt ist. Nutze aktuell #KDE #Plasma mit #i3wm hoffe das ich irgendwann ähnliches mit Wayland kann.

Also... If you need more than 5 virtual desktops on your #Linux / #UNIX #tiling #WM then I kindly ask you to STOP what the hell you're doing and take a DEEP breath to consider. #DWM #Sway #i3wm

#Emacs's display-buffer-alist is awesome once you the hang of it. It allows to completely
change how Emacs's own windows are placed.
Like I'm using #i3 #i3wm I want that most of my Emacs windows are just frames.
The only downside is that a lot of that infrastructure depends on #X11 since on #Wayland
you can't universally tell if a frame is visible or where you want it to be placed..
For now fixing the i3 integration to filter visible frames for display-buffer-alist.

Hmm using i3 as a kwin replacement works fine. Well but don't have your panel on autohide. I can't invoke it anymore.

[Update: I still love the ideas in I3 and Sway, but at the end of the day lack of any kind of accessibility options moved me over to @kde ]

Finally something that doesn't shower me with visual input I can't process and don't need and lets me move from desire -> action with the absolute minimum effort/keystrokes.

Starting my keyboard-(almost-)only, tilingWM journey some years ago with Herbstluftwm over i3/sway, it has now been tweaked near to perfection with NIRI. Everything's extremely fast and responsive, check out this screencast!

As with Sway, I can handle KeepassXC-CLI shortcut integration with no plugins needed.
Pass has been a solid choice, too.
Qutebrowser is not the only one in town to handle vim-like keybinding (but a good one 😉).
And yeah, dystopian Fallout retro is the stylish way to go the KISS way 😍

I am curious... I want to install a #tiling window manager on my #linux system. I'm not (for now) going to Wayland. Which tiling window manager do you recommend, and why?

Another option appears to be coretile. Has anyone used it?

I came across something recently that basically stressed the importance of understanding the tools you use on a daily basis to get the most out of them. It suggested that you need to get familiar with the primary sources of docs as well and not just distilled summaries that hold your hand and give you a generic solution to one particular problem your trying to solve. With that in mind, my reading list lately has been the official docs for #neomutt, #irssi, #i3wm, #opnsense, #tmux. I think this is more important than ever when it's so easy to use an #llm to search for information.

#polybar con script varios, entre ellos uno para visualizar lo que se reproduce con mopidy + ncmpcpp (musica o podcast) En fin nada fuera de lo habitual.

Last change on the software side of my dev setup was to start using #PaperWM. It’s so awesome! It’s fast, smooth, has exactly what I need from a window manager, and it’s rock solid. In the past I’ve been using #awesomewm, #xmonad, #i3wm and while I liked them all better than classic floating WMs, only PaperWM feels exactly like what I always needed. And, on a 120hz display its quick animations look fantastic.
