  1. Garmin and Two to Four Weeks of Waiting

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

A few days ago I think I ran and then swam. While waiting for lunch I noticed that the Garmin Forerunner 570 had a bit of plastic sticking out of it so I pulled on it, to see if it came loose. It didn’t. It stayed put. It appeared to come from between the case, and the screen. I suspect that it is part of the o-ring or adhesive mateerial that keeps the screen attached to the body of the watch that came loose.

I would have taken it to Galaxus last week but because of Paléo and a sleep deprived state of being, I chose to go on Monday, when I had had time to recover.

It was amusing to go to Geneva, and go for a walk by the lake side before returning to the shop because when I arrived in front of the shop I saw a queue of people waiting. I continued ym walk and by the time I had walked around the square the queue had disappeared within. I got the ticket and then I waited a few minutes.

It is often funny when you go to an Apple Store or Galaxus and either return something, or drop it off to be repaired because it is relatively informal. You give them the case number, they look it up, you reset your device, and then you wait.

When I took the Apple watch for repair it took two to three days, if I remember correctly for them to replace it. With the Garmin Forerunner 570 it might take two to four weeks, which, with a fitness track, if you have just one, is a month of untracked training.

That wait is because there are two to three hops. Hop 1 is you taking it to Digitec, the second is from the Geneva store to the main warehouse, and from there to Garmin’s warehouses, to be looked over and fixed or replaced. That’s why it takes two weeks to a month.

Years ago I had the Apple Watch 4 and the screen had a hairline fracture after indoor climbing. My suunto devices never had any issues, despite outdoor climbing.

The defect with the 570 is the second defect I’ve had with a watch, after decades of ownership, and after owning Garmin, suunto, Apple, Casio and possibly two or three brands.

Hypothetically I could have snipped the plastic that was sticking out but the watch is still under warranty so it was worth handing it in for two to four weeks to get it “good as new”, or possibly “replaced”, although I doubt the latter.

Two weeks seems reasonable, but an entire month feels like a long time.

It’s amusing that I didn’t consider the two to four week wait.

Marissa Mayer’s new startup Dazzle raises $8M led by Forerunner’s Kirsten Green

By Marina Temkin, 8:48 AM PST · December 23, 2025

The former Yahoo CEO, Marissa Mayer, refuses to sit on the sidelines of the generative AI revolution.

After spending the last six years running Sunshine, a photo-sharing and contact-management startup with little success, the storied tech leader has shuttered the company to launch Dazzle, a new startup focused on building the next generation of AI personal assistants.

While Mayer is not yet sharing specifics about Dazzle’s functionality, she has revealed that the new company has raised an $8 million seed round at a $35 million valuation. The round was led by Forerunner’s Kirsten Green, with participation from Kleiner Perkins, Greycroft, Offline Ventures, Slow Ventures, and Bling Capital. Although Mayer has admitted to investing her own capital in the startup, she emphasized that the round was led by Green, a venture capitalist with a storied record of identifying iconic consumer brands such as Warby Parker, Chime, and Dollar Shave Club.

Green’s investment suggests Dazzle is poised for the coming wave of new AI-infused consumer businesses. The founder of Forerunner Ventures previously told TechCrunch that while enterprise AI took the early lead in this tech cycle, consumer-facing AI is a “late bloomer” that’s finally ready for its breakout.

Even for a founder of Mayer’s fame, landing Green as a lead investor is a significant stamp of credibility for Dazzle, especially after Sunshine was widely considered to be a flop. “I think she really has a great sense for where people and platforms are going,” Mayer said.

Mayer told TechCrunch that the Sunshine team began prototyping Dazzle last summer, a project that quickly eclipsed their previous work in ambition and opportunity. “We realized that this was something that we were much more excited about,” she said, noting that Dazzle has potential for “a much bigger impact” than what Sunshine was building.

Originally founded as Lumi Labs in 2018, Sunshine first launched with a subscription app for contact management dubbed “Sunshine Contacts.”

Despite its founder’s high profile, the product struggled to gain traction. Privacy advocates raised alarms over the app’s practice of pulling home addresses from public databases to enrich contact lists, and the company never recovered from the initial skepticism. By 2024, the company broadened its offering by adding event management and “Shine,” an AI-powered photo-sharing tool. The new offering was widely criticized for its outdated design and similarly failed to attract widespread usage.

  21. It's a long shot, but do I know anyone who has a spare wristband for a Garmin #Forerunner 10 or 15 #GPS #running #watch?

Mine snapped and a new one is either ridiculously expensive or has a three month delivery window..

Naturally I will happily pay for shipping etc 🙂

  24. Today I switched back from #AppleWatch 8 to #Garmin #Forerunner 955 after 1,5 year with #Apple’s watch.

    First impressions:
    1. Garmin is faster 😂

    2. Not charging watch every day is a relief bigger then I thought and remembered.

    3. Having valid training suggestion just after setting the watch up with no third-party apps, accounts or subscriptions is… as easy and convenient as it should be.

  26. No #running today, instead I went on a short #SkiTour with my wife up our "house mountain" #Patscherkofel.

Nothing too fancy, just a nice day outdoors without the usual crowds that populate the ski resorts.

And also a nice test for my new #Garmin #ForeRunner955, which I got for Xmas 😎 Unfortunately, it didn't record the ascent correctly (only 479m instead of the ca 1200m). Need to find out why before I use it for #TrailRunning

  28. @herrbischoff I considered the #Coros 2 but after watching many review/comparison videos and reading many review/comparison articles I landed on the #Garmin #Forerunner 255 Music. It has been the best decision and I can't believe how long I lived with the subpar experience of my previous #Android #WearOS watches.

  29. @The_KamikaZEN it sure is. For me it really comes down to two aspects:
    1. smartwatch vs sports watch dilemma and
    2. how serious you are about measuring and analyzing your running/trainings (hard to beat Garmin in that field)

And I would take a look at the newly announced #Garmin #Forerunner #965 - top running watch with AMOLED display.

  31. @colin great idea, wonder if it works on smaller Garmins, like my #forerunner 55? Will try it next time & thx for the tip.
