Isaiah, Chapter 1

The first chapter of Isaiah serves as a fiery courtroom drama, setting the thematic stage for the entire book. Yahweh brings a legal indictment against Judah and Jerusalem, comparing them to Sodom and Gomorrah for their systemic injustice, empty religious rituals, and moral corruption. God rejects their lavish sacrifices and prayers, declaring that ritual piety is worthless without ethical action, and demands that they “learn to do good” by defending the oppressed, the orphan, and the widow. The chapter concludes with a pivotal ultimatum: a promise of radical purification and restoration if the nation repents, contrasted against absolute destruction if they persist in their rebellion. The vision concerning Judah & Jerusalem that Isaiah, son of Amoz, saw during the reigns of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, & Hezekiah, kings of Judah. Hear, O heavens! Listen, O earth! For the Lord has spoken: “I reared children & brought them up, but they’ve rebelled against me. The ox knows his master, the donkey his owner’s manager, but Israel doesn’t know; my people don’t understand.”

Ah, sinful nation, a people loaded with guilt, a brood of evildoers, kids given to corruption! They’ve forsaken the Lord. They’ve spurned the Holy One of Israel & turned their backs on him. Why should you be beaten anymore? Why do you persist in rebellion? Your whole head is injured, your whole heart afflicted.

From the sole of your foot to the top of your head there’s no soundness – only wounds & welts & open sores, not cleansed or bandages or soothed with oil. Your country is desolate, your cities burned with fire. Your fields are being stripped by foreigners right before you, laid waste as when overthrown by strangers.

The Daughter of Zion is left like a shelter in a vineyard, like a hut in a field of melons, like a city under siege. Unless the Lord Almighty had left us some survivors, we would have become like Sodom; we would’ve been like Gomorrah. (Check out Romans 9:29.)

Hear the word of the Lord, you rulers of Sodom; listen to the law of our God, you people of Gomorrah! “The multitude of your sacrifices – what are they to me?” says the Lord. “I have more than enough of burnt offerings, of rams & the fat of fattened animals; I have no pleasure in the blood of bulls & lambs & goats.”

“When you come to appear before me, who has asked this of you, this trampling of my courts? Stop bringing meaningless offerings! Your incense is detestable to me. New Moons, Sabbaths & convocations – I cannot bear your evil assemblies. Your New Moon festivals & your appointed feasts, my soul hates.”

“They’ve become a burden to me. I’m weary of bearing them. When you spread out your hands in prayer, I’ll hide my eyes from you. Even if you offer many prayers, I’ll not listen. Your hands are full of blood; wash & make yourselves clean.”

“Take your evil deeds out of my sight! Stop doing wrong, learn to do right! Seek justice, encourage the oppressed. Defend the cause of the fatherless, plead the case of the widow. ‘Come now, let us reason together,’ says the Lord. ‘Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow. Though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool.’

‘If you’re willing & obedient, you’ll eat the best from the land. But if you resist & rebel, you’ll be devoured by the sword.'” For the mouth of the Lord has spoken. See how the faithful city has become a harlot! She once was full of justice.

Righteousness used to dwell in her. But now murderers! Your silver has become dross; your choice wine is diluted with water. Your rulers are rebels, companions of thieves. They all love bribes & chase after gifts. They don’t defend the cause of the fatherless. The widow’s case doesn’t come before them.

Therefore the Lord, the Lord Almighty, the Mighty One of Israel, declares: “Ah, I’ll get relief from my foes & avenge myself on my enemies. I’ll turn my hand against you. I’ll thoroughly purge away your dross & remove all your impurities.”

“I’ll restore your judges as in days of old, your counselors as at the beginning. Afterward you’ll be called the City of Righteousness, the Faithful City.” Zion will be redeemed with justice, her penitent ones with righteousness. But rebels & sinners will both be broken, & those who forsake the Lord will perish.

“You’ll be ashamed because of sacred oaks in which you’ve delighted. You’ll be disgraced because of the gardens that you’ve chosen. You’ll be like an oak with fading leaves, like a garden without water. The mighty man will become tinder & his work a spark. Both will burn together, with no one to quench the fire.”
