One of my other hobbies is collecting old travel books. By "old", I mean 100+ years. Most are from the "Peeps At Many Lands" range, published between 1904 and 1934.
I started it on a whim. Now it feels like an act of rebellion.

This book was worth losing the only bookshelf I had. People who value possessions more than people still have that bookshelf, while I have someone who wanted to get to know me better just because I'd read this book, too.
My grandmother had given me one of a pair of bookshelves she had before she died. Several years later, my parents wanted it. They had always been selfish and abusive, but this was a new low. My grandmother had left them money, but they wanted the set. I was in need of a new apartment, a permanent job, and friends I could count on, because I only ever heard from family when they wanted something. I let them take my bookshelf. I never heard from them again.
That same week, I got a date with a man I met at a music shop. I asked him about AI, which led to a discussion of books that explain it well, including The Science of Discworld. I could tell he was about to mention how Terry Pratchett described homo sapiens, so I asked "Pan Narrans?" On our date, he said he'd asked me out specifically because he was amazed that "The Storytelling Ape" made sense to me, too.
After our second date, I moved in with him. I had no bookshelves, but I had my favorite books, and now I had a man who also thought books and people who read them matter more than furniture, too.
