Detection of AI-generated text, an arms race

Do not put a lot of faith in the exact percentages given by these detectors!

Current versions of detectors rely on machine-learning models trained to distinguish between human-written content and their AI-generated mirror.
The resulting software is rarely labeling human writing as AI. But the tools don’t always satisfyingly distinguish between "mixed cases" (lightly polished with AI, heavily AI-assisted or entirely AI-generated).

  3. "Last week we published a story that revealed an Amazon warehouse where the company scans and destroys thousands of books for AI training data. The following is an interview with one of the Amazon employees at this warehouse. We granted this employee anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the press.

The employee worked at Amazon’s VGT3 warehouse, which is housed in the same facility as LAS8, where Amazon operates its print-on-demand business. Both operations are part of a larger complex of Amazon facilities in Las Vegas, Nevada.

We discovered that VGT3 was used to destructively scan books for AI training data by placing a tracking device in a shipment of rare books that a bookseller suspected was being acquired by an anonymous AI company. We saw the shipment travel across the country before finally landing at VGT3. Online, Amazon employees who worked at VGT3 described the work of receiving shipments of books, cutting the spines off of them, and scanning the loose pages.

The Amazon employee I talked to described what that operation looks like from the warehouse floor."

  4. "No country has rolled out AI as comprehensively and as enthusiastically as China; the country’s demographic challenges are forcing the government to turn to technology to solve future labour shortages. Elderly people use chatbots to answer medical questions, while young children have AI education in schools.

But the authorities are increasingly worried that AI might exacerbate existing social problems including loneliness, unemployment and – in the eyes of Beijing – singledom.

New rules introduced on 15 July ban AI companions for minors and mandate certain restrictions for chatbots marketed to adults. Some major providers including Doubao removed the companion function entirely to ensure compliance.

The government says it is worried about chatbots fostering “emotional dependence or addiction” in users. It has warned companies against offering services that “replace social interaction”.

While many countries are grappling with how to limit the potential harm of AI chatbots, particularly for young people, China’s rules are the most sweeping to be implemented on a national scale."

  5. What exactly is a large language model?

LLMs power many of today’s AI assistants.

LLMs can write, summarize, translate, code and answer questions because they have learned patterns from enormous amounts of text.

But they do not automatically know what is true.

Understanding LLMs helps explain both the power and the limitations of modern AI.

  6. Why Most AI POCs Stall and How to Build an AI Operating Model That Works

Companies are generating more AI ideas, hackathons, and proof-of-concepts than ever before. Yet only a small fraction of those initiatives ever become secure, scalable, and widely adopted production solutions. The challenge isn't a lack of innovation or model capability. It's the absence of an AI operating model that connects governance, data readiness, measurement, accountability, and people enablement. In this article, I explore why most AI POCs stall and what organizations can do differently to consistently transform AI experiments into measurable business value.

"AI architecture is not an interest of mine..."

That's sensible. But. What LLMs do is quite simple.

LLMs are exactly and only _statistical text generators_. Albeit fancy ones.

The AI bros claim that statistical operations on enormous text databases can generate causal reasoning and thus intelligence.

That breaks the first law of statistics: correlation is not causation.

Thus LLMs can't possibly do what's claimed.

  9. ChatGPT can now do more than build a website. It can publish it too.

ChatGPT Sites lets you create and host websites on demand, with the option to use your own domain. But what can businesses actually use it for?

Our guide explores how ChatGPT Sites works and the types of business websites you can create with it.

  10. Artificial intelligence is much bigger than ChatGPT.

AI already powers recommendations, fraud detection, medical tools, search, smartphones, software development and automation.

But it also brings real challenges involving accuracy, bias, privacy, security and jobs.

  12. In mid-February, I set up a small informal seminar in my department, the "Semiautomatic Lean Working Group", to actively test out new LLM-based Leaning capabilities of commercially available models.

Until then, I had refused direct engagement with such systems, for any purpose whatsoever, but I could not look away any longer, especially due to what I understood about its impending impact on the journal business.

We set out to share our experiences, exchange technical tips, discuss the latest news, and try to understand this better. Rather quickly, the seminar evolved into more of a "support group", where we would joke at the latest over-stretched analogy, speculate on optimistic/pessimistic futures, admit to our token dependencies, and express our grief.

The working group has reached a natural coda, as the department (with broader university backing) has just set up a broader committee to grapple with the big shifts underway.

I learned a lot through the working group, went through a lot of phases, and am grateful to the other members for walking together in this journey. Building and strengthening connections, sharing and reflection with others, this is how we move forward in this.
