Does #copyfail open any interesting doors for hacking (and upgrading/re-using) old locked down hardware?
I'm initially thinking about old routers which couldn't previously have #OpenWRT installed on them 🤔
(I'm very much beyond my knowledge area, please inform/correct me)
Edit: more info: https://copy.fail/

Ok fediverse, I have a #linux question - which OS should I use for my #cyberdeck project?
It's going to have an fairly small lo-res e-ink screen, run on an old raspberry pi, and run off a battery pack.
(Side-note: I think this is probably the point where I start learning about the #ricing, desktop environments, etc...)
-
hey @rupdecat! Did you post on here about https://saranjeetkaur.github.io/nanopub_101yet?
I just read it, enjoyed it, and came here to look for something about it to boost! :) -
@elizabethtasker I suspect @neuralreckoning and the other #neuromatch folks might have suggestions
-
I would also love some help on making all the slides show on a vertical phone screen - currently the wide ones are blank (but they show if you rotate the phone...)
-
If there are any #quarto / #quartoLive / #revealjs nerds who want to have a play - code is here: https://codeberg.org/da5nsy/OpenColourResearch
(https://r-wasm.github.io/quarto-live/)
I tried earlier and couldn't get it to play nicely.

This week I'm taking a break from #MetaScience / #OpenScience and getting back into #SCIENCE!
I'm at the Rank Symposium on "21st Century Colour Vision" 👁️🧠🌈🤓
Got Colour Vision questions? AMA!

@hi
I've enjoyed having switched from #GooglePhotos to #ente recently - there's a couple of things to get used to, but overall I like it. My main goal with it is photo backup, and being able to search photos by content ("mum", or "pasta recipe").For music and video I use #VLC (but #Voice for audiobooks, and #AntennaPod for podcasts).

Hey fediverse, what's the latest news on portable mini e-ink computers? I wanna be able to run linux from my hammock in the sunny woods this summer 🌞
-
I'm at the Open Science Retreat (#OSR26UK) this week, at the #CentreForAlternativeTechnology in #Machynlleth this week - surrounded by experimental #solar arrays (incl. some cool ones from "history") and it has reminded me about my account on solarcene.community (a #SolarPowered #mastodon instance) - time to dust that off and have a play!
-
Want to get involved? Please do!

Feeling like the start of Spring. Taking stock of what survived the winter.
Garden is growing nicely - bluebells and dandilions flowering, and the first of the Green Alkanet is flowering. Lots of bees. Some nice violets in the grass. 2/3 rhubarbs survived the winter. As did chard, beetroot and perhaps another leafy green thing.
Pulled out a few alkanets to give some other things more of a chance.
Oh and Rosemary, Lavender, Lemon Balm, Mint (in the pot out front) all doing well.
Plum blossom was good, now going over.

Hey hey! Just following up on this! Do either of you two know of anyone making a laptop with an e-ink screen yet? (or even someone who has hacked one together which I might be able to follow along some instructions from 🤓 )
-
I just (finally!) cancelled my #dropbox subscription as part of my move away from propritary (esp. American) tech! 🎉
I've been a subscriber since I was a teenager and it has taken me a while to work out how to untangle myself from this one!
(I'm moving to #ProtonDrive and #BorgBackup instead)

This event is on Thursday! Come along to learn more about #ElectronicResearchNotebooks
It's shaping up to look like it's going to be jolly good fun indeed (if you're in to that sort of thing...!)

Ooh I just found out yet another delightful thing about #GortonAndDenton:
> in an embarrassing loss for the Conservatives [...] the party’s vote share was so decimated that it lost its deposit for the first time in 40 years, attracting less than 2% of the vote.
🥰
-
CW: UKPol
Well, I seem to be staying up to watch the results of the #GortonAndDentonByElection 😬🤞
-
CW: UK pol, Gorton and Denton by-election
Got friends/family who live near Manchester or Stockport?
Remind them to vote! It's TOMORROW (26th)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2026_Gorton_and_Denton_by-election
The polls have the Greens and Reform neck-and-neck on ~30% of the vote (with Green coming out ahead in a the most recent poll*), but with ~30% still undecided.
TALK TO YOUR PEOPLE 🙏
This result is likely going to have major long-term implications for British politics - it will embolden either the Greens or Reform, and that momentum may well ultimately decide who wins the next election.
Boosts hugely appreciated

@carlt4 Yeah I've tried it, and it doesn't work reliably sadly (it gets some of the files and then times out...).
I think I delved into the forums to work out whether I was doing something wrong and the answer as I recall it is that Proton (currently) actively blocks the type of access that #rclone uses.
#Proton keeps saying that there will be a #ProtonDrive app for #Linux soon though 🤞
-
Urgh I just spent the morning learning about #samba as a workaround to there not being a #ProtonDrive app for #linux, and then discovered that _that_ doesn't work either! https://protonmail.uservoice.com/forums/284483-proton-mail-calendar/suggestions/43728105-allow-us-to-map-protondrive-to-a-local-network-dri
Urgh.
Well, at least I learnt a thing! 🎉

Is there anything like a "reverse torrent search"?
I want to be able to say "hey software, here's a bunch of files, go out and find some torrents that they correspond (or partially correspond) to, and do what needs to happen so that I can be seeding those files."
-
@amorphophalex
I had a similar experience switching to #LineageOS recently - it made me realise how many other ways Google had crept into my life - contacts, keyboard etc... #degoogling -
@Daojoan
#Couchsurfing used to have a vouch system which worked a bit like this (once you'd been vouched for x times you could vouch for other people) -
@irene
Slightly sideways answer but just checking whether you've heard of #freecycle?
Looks like the Seattle group is pretty active

Really excited to be at #Feÿtopia this week for "Open Science & Human Pyramids"!
https://feytopia.com/events/openscience-humanpyramids2
I've been looking for an excuse to visit since I heard about it at the #LondonNightCafe and I'm so excited to spend the week here bringing together thoughts and conversations around #OpenResearch, #WorkersCoops, and #IntentionalCommunities! 🤓🤩✨
I'll be partly wearing my @digiresacademy community manager hat too, and telling folks about our community and work 🎉👒

Any #GPS / #android nerds wanna help me debug something?
https://gitlab.com/LineageOS/issues/android/-/issues/9652
I have two #fairphone3, one running #lineageos and the other running the default OS, and the lineageOS doesn't find GPS 99% of the time...
I'm at the edge of my knowledge and would love some suggestions for how to debug further, or if someone wants to jump on a call and try to work it out together.

I built a (shitty placeholder) website! 🎉

Have you heard any recent updates on the federation? Last time I checked (a few months back) it seemed to be in the "nice to have" category but not particularly actively being worked on.
-
I've just caved and set up Google calendar and contacts access BUT I've done it through #davx5 and am using the default calendar and contacts apps which came with #lineage.
Long-term I think it would be fun to move away from having #Google manage that data for me (maybe using #radicale and #syncthing? https://forum.syncthing.net/t/how-to-sync-contacts-and-calendars-between-desktop-and-android-without-root/21326) but that can be an adventure for another day.

RE: https://mastodon.social/@digiresacademy/115702812560956273
I attended the dry-run of this course* recently and it was pretty mind-blowing - I'd seen before how #pixi can be used for python packaging but this course introduced me to a few new example use cases:
- Reproducible data analysis in #R
- A new application in #C
-Image processing with #Python
- #Jupyter Notebook for exploratory analysis -
I made a gap of the Broad Rental Market Areas (BRMAs) in #QGIS (because I wanted it, and also an excuse to try QGIS) to try and work out where we can afford to start a housing co-op.
-
We made a little #zine together, with an internal poster (I drew the poster!) as a quick test print. It was a lovely way to test the tech, but I think it was also a good lesson in collaboration and not being too perfectionist - just do it!
For the A5 plates, one person drew the first colour, and then traded with another person who drew the second colour (on tracing paper so they could see the underlying image).
-
Who do I know (ideally in the UK) who is working on making "open science" less about the science? Send me your heros in the open research in the arts and humanities please! 🎭 📖 🎨 ✨
-
Just looking into this event - looks awesome: "Feÿtopia Open Science & Human Pyramids"
https://feytopia.com/events/openscience-humanpyramids2
I've wanted to visit #Feÿtopia for a while (a seasonal commune in a French château...) and this seems like it might be the crossover for me (#OpenScience + #communalLiving!? Let's go!)
Anyone else from my fediverse networks thinking of going?

Enjoying this talk from Eric (of the Location Night Cafe) at the Post Bar.

Is there a #lowtech #mastodon / #fediverse client, or server (fork)?
Thinking something which minimises bandwidth/power/storage consumption, like the work which has been done on @lowtechmagazine (https://solar.lowtechmagazine.com/about/the-solar-website/#how)

Just found out an org I'm affiliated with gets their hex stickers printed with Sticker Mule (who are MAGA supporters) - where are the rad projects getting stickers printed these days? Recommendations please, boosts appreciated.
(right now we're looking for USA-based, but long-term we'll want an EU printer too - ideally German)
