Migrating 354GB from Google Photos to Proton was… an adventure.
Key lesson: Proton Drive and Proton Photos are NOT the same API. Uploading to Drive doesn't put photos in your timeline. Two completely different systems.
I built gphoto2proton (with 2 approaches):
1️⃣ Go binary — streaming from .tgz, no disk extraction, cross-platform (macOS/Linux/Windows). Photos land in Drive. Albums via the undocumented Photos API.
2️⃣ Bash script — wraps the proton-drive CLI (which has hidden photo/album commands not in the README). Photos go directly to the timeline. Linux only. Needs disk space for extraction.
Why two? Because Proton's architecture forced it. Windows users have native app support. Everyone else gets to DIY.

#TechIsShitDispatch at this moment as I type this the #GooglePhotos web app is unable to download multiple selected photos. When you select the photos and type Shift-D, it pops up a "Preparing to download 4 items…" modal which never goes away.

It took me about 2 days to transfer over 250 GB of photos from Google Photos to @pixelunion with their migration tool. Now my photos are safe and sound in Europe.
The face recognition works even better than Google's, and Immich is an awesome piece of software. I would have hosted this entirely on my own like my Nextcloud, but paying a couple of bucks for 450 GB of storage and a fast server is a real bargain and saves me the hassle. Well done, PixelUnion!

To be fair, if I set my default search provider in #GoogleChrome to #GoogleSearch it will give me a button for #GoogleLens in the address bar when looking at #GooglePhotos, so #GoogleGemini was right about that. Thanks, #Google.

I tried asking #GoogleGemini how I could use #GoogleLens while looking at #GooglePhotos in #GoogleChrome.
It gave me four rounds of instructions that didn't match up with the actual current interfaces or menu options before finally suggesting that I just open two windows and drag the photo from one to the other.

Have I previously complained about how stupid it is that #GoogleLens doesn't work in the web version of #GooglePhotos, or even the built-in #GoogleChrome interface for #GoogleGemini? The one place I commonly want to use #AI, they won't give it to me.
