This thing here is something the #GNOME project always did; I'm glad gettext is helping making it default behavior:

"In a po/ directory, the PO files are now exactly those that the translators submitted or committed in version control, or a translation project's daemon committed on behalf of the translators. They are no longer regularly updated with respect to the POT file in the same directory."

As a #RDataTable translator and, more importantly, as a former #GNOME translator, I'm happy with the 1.0 release of gettext, an incredibly good internationalization and localization toolkit. If your software project is not using gettext yet, do consider changing that.

If I'm getting ready for localization of my film and I want to add both subtitles and descriptive audio, should I just use SRT for both?

Obviously they would be used differently, and I will likely record the English descriptive audio myself. But it seems like SRT would provide a good representation for other language readings. Does that make sense?

Digging deeper there's more to it than just the one-line prompt: #Xcode 27 ships with 2 built-in localization skills that get called here.

They are pretty impressive, covering many topics including pluralization & style guides for 14 languages. Not bad at all! 💯

When Craig said #Xcode can now translate entire apps, I was worried at first. But turns out Xcode is literally just starting an agent session with the prompt "Please translate into <language>" 😅

Upon seeing this toot for the second time, but in a more tired state of mind, I interpreted `locale` as in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Locale_(computer_software) and paused for a moment...

Konform Browser now comes with global translations and localization bundled. This means you can get UI in non-English languages out of the box without having to download language-pack addons.

This release also comes with improved memory efficiency and a few other minor improvements and fixes.

In other news, Konform Browser is now additionally available in Artix Linux repositories.

La plateforme de traduction #l10n de GNOME ne fonctionne pas ce matin.

I found the translations for my favorite self-hosted music streaming app a bit lacking.

So I rolled up my sleeves and did something about it :3

Od dob, kdy se psala původní příručka pro překladatele, se pár věcí změnilo. Překladatelský tým GNOME má nyní novou a podrobnější příručku. Není kompletní — stále přemýšlím, co přidat — ale doufám, že pomůže dalším zájemcům o překlad začít překládat.

i have a question for speakers of different languages regarding how the software you are using expresses the concept of "an action is currently happening" (examples in english: "Downloading updates..." / "Saving report.doc, please wait...")

so far i see the following options, please correct me or provide with additional ones, or info on languages i have not mentioned

#german / #deutsch: passive voice with phrases such as "wird heruntergeladen" (is being downloaded)

#french / #français: nouns corresponding to verbs, such as "lecture" (reading), "téléchargement" (down-/uploading) and "enregistrement" (saving)

#russian / #русский: likewise verbal nouns, such as "чтение" (reading), "загрузка" (loading/uploading), "сохранение" (saving)

#italian / #italiano: verbal nouns ending in -aggio

#japanese / #日本語: verbs ending in 中
