📰 The Big Red Word vs. the Little Green Man — #Slate
The international war over exit signs.
❝Green is the color of safety, a color that means *go* the world over. Red, on the other hand, most often means *danger, alert, halt, please don't touch*. Why confuse panicked evacuees with a sign that means *right this way* in a color that means *stop*?❞
This is an old article, from 2010, but it's an interesting read.

This holidays I'm a bit unable to walk too much so I was looking at improving the #i18n tooling for #Go.
This is all very fresh but together with gitlab.com/zygoon/go-i18n it makes it relatively easy to support shipping translations in go modules, across go module proxy, and using it from applications and libraries alike.

17 July is the one day of the year when the calendar #emoji is correct!
The word emoji combines the Japanese e (絵, picture) + moji (文字, character) and dates back to the late 80s. Its similarity to the English "emotion" is just a coincidence.
Nowadays, emoji are standardised by the Unicode Consortium, a Californian non-profit that has its roots in facilitating a universal digital representation of the world's writing systems. #Unicode doesn't specify exactly how emoji should look – so they're different on Android and Apple devices, for example – but it lists their names.
The first major character set used in computing was #ASCII, the American Standard Code for Information Interchange, published in 1963. Using 7 bits, it could represent 128 characters — more than enough for a to z, A to Z, 0 to 9 and common punctuation marks, but certainly indicative of a North American worldview.
Later "extended" versions of ASCII doubled this to 256 possibilities, allowing for dozens of accented letters, characters like æ and ß, and symbols like © and ¾. And double-byte character sets like Shift JIS meant that Chinese, Korean and Japanese could be represented in full. But multiple standards existed, and it became just a bit too common to see .
The answer was Unicode: a single, multi-byte character encoding standard for everyone. Plus emoji!

I also got great feedback which I added as updates.

Локализация уже скомпилированных React компонентов в node_modules
🇧🇷 🇨🇳 🇮🇳 Локализуем React не трогая код компонентов React-компоненты из node_modules уже скомпилированы, поэтому внедрить react-i18next в них обычно невозможно без форка библиотеки. В статье показываю, как перехватить все вызовы jsx/jsxs через кастомный react/jsx-runtime и автоматически локализовать текст даже внутри уже собранных компонентов, не меняя их исходный код.

https://www.disco2very.org is a game to discover the CO2 footprint of our daily life
I am looking for help to proofread Spanish, German and (why not?) English.
The locale files for the UI are in:
https://github.com/Flaburgan/disco2very/tree/master/localesFor German, the data should also be translated: https://github.com/Flaburgan/disco2very/blob/master/data/ademe/locales/de.json
It is already proofread for EN and ES.
German translators can compare to https://github.com/Flaburgan/disco2very/blob/master/data/ademe/locales/en.json if you want English already proofread translations
Thank you for your help!

This thing here is something the #GNOME project always did; I'm glad gettext is helping making it default behavior:
"In a po/ directory, the PO files are now exactly those that the translators submitted or committed in version control, or a translation project's daemon committed on behalf of the translators. They are no longer regularly updated with respect to the POT file in the same directory."
-
As a #RDataTable translator and, more importantly, as a former #GNOME translator, I'm happy with the 1.0 release of gettext, an incredibly good internationalization and localization toolkit. If your software project is not using gettext yet, do consider changing that.

It’s been such a ride trying to find all the string hiding in my app and make the available for localization. My intial run produced some 550 strings and I thought that I was more or less done. Some testing and I had 700 strings. “Surely these are all?“. Now I’m up to 934 strings and I’ve resigned to never being able to find them all. I had Claude trawl through the code multiple times looking for various patterns and it helped a lot.

The Internationalization Working Group has published HTML Ruby Markup Extensions as a W3C Candidate Recommendation Snapshot.
Ruby, a form of interlinear annotation, are short runs of text alongside the base text. They are typically used in East Asian documents to indicate pronunciation or to provide a short annotation. This specification revises and extends the markup model established by HTML to express ruby.
