  2. In #Friendica we cannot set the language for a post? Strange, because otherwise it looks far more featureful than e.g. #Mastodon 😞

In general, I like Mastodon better than Friendica, because I'm used to it. I disliked Mastodon 10+ years ago, because I was used to #Diaspora 😉

In my favourite #socialApp, #Movim by @movim, I'm also missing language features, i.e. set language(s) per post and filtering my #timelime by language 🤷

All the names are misspelled in this article. Diacritics are never optional in #Swedish, as they might be in non-Nordic #languages.

  12. Speaker spotlight: Felipe Moreno: "How Translations Work" - Maintainers Summit

Most OSS projects say they want to be welcoming to a global community. Far fewer have actually figured out the translation pipeline, how you avoid the "half-translated forever" problem.

Felipe is going to walk through how it actually works, in enough detail to take back to your own project.

Localisation is not difficult. If you can translate the app into zillions of languages you could say least include British English.

  16. How do you know early when #Haikuos is preparing for a new release? It's when I start asking people to have a look at our #i18n / #translation tool and help complete translations for various languages.

For beta releases, our policy is to include only languages where the translation is at least 60% complete. This time we need help to reach this in Belarusian, Croatian, Bulgarian, and Slovenian.

Lithuanian and Slovak are above 60% but may need some help too.

  19. @bkuhn

Interesting. I am not sure what the extent of support is for #i18n and #l8n across the #ActivityPub fediverse. I am not sure how you mean exactly.. mixed language content in a single post? I am also thinking of things like posting in 2 or more languages at the same time, where the client UI picks the most appropriate language, and there is a default for fallback.

(Update: Parent post updated to clarify further)

  20. It's not often that I get to just use #UE5Coro as a normal user, without thinking about new features or handling even more corner cases. It's really nice, I feel like "regular" C++ is a lesser language. Last time this happened to me was with #Qt and C++03.

I know that I'm tooting my own horn here, but it's not like I'm doing it for sales; it's free software. I hope it makes your life with #UE5 (or #UE4!) easier if you're into #coroutines (or #i18n 🙃), even if only for editor tooling.

  21. Translation work on the Fern TUI interface is coming along. Hitting a lot of snags with the different ways languages structure grammar, sentences and words (some don't have a plural, gendered languages, etc). :blobcat_itisfine:

Will probably need to back up a little and rework things, so it's much simpler in order to improve UI translation accuracy...with the tradeoff likely being more work for translators to setup and maintain.
    :bunhdthink:

PS. If anyone knows of good examples of UI translations another project is doing I would love to check them out for inspiration. Thanks! Gracias! ありがとう!

  23. @wyatt @hatzka If I had to guess, these fundamental changes have happened since the XFree86 era:

    1. Internationalization: Personal computer use has expanded out of the Americas and western Europe. Asia in particular brings a need for large glyph sets, contextual glyph shaping, diacritic stacking, bidirectional writing, top-to-bottom writing, and antialiasing to make small curves easier to distinguish. How well does X11's font paradigm handle these, as opposed to relying on "modern" toolkits to shove bitmaps around?

    2. High density: People expect things to appear the same size on more than one display connected to one computer even if one has more pixels per millimeter than the other.

    3. Privacy: Computer networks have become much less trusted over the past few decades. There was demand to deter publishers of proprietary applications from surreptitiously activating a keylogger or screen logger to exfiltrate your data in other applications.

    #JS #Intl #i18n

Hello browser people, hello server people, hello JS,

what I do wonder about is if we could harmonize the data offered in your version of Intl developer.mozilla.org/de/docs/

    Two examples :
    - Federal States and Currency

    user story;
A client-to-server federated software can rely on Intl and use all of its data and names in all of the languages consistently.

Currently some environments only offer ISO3166-2 and "a subset of" ISO3166-2-lvl4 while others thankfully offer all ISO3166-2-lvl4 and ISO3166-2-lvl8 …
Let's just get all of the states.

Yesterday we had a quiz with the question of the currency in the "holiday paradise Curaçao and Sint Maarten" which is the Carribean Gulden since 2025.

Could there be 1 repository for the data for all [despite hypercapitalism] ?

Then we could e.g. write things comparing against e.g. wikidata, contribute, keep it updated and be happy.

    ?

  26. Are there currently any methods or projects that make it possible to get localisation or internationalisation by throwing processing power at it?

Idk, something like get multiple different self-hosted automatic translation systems to translate a single string, and if they agree on translation, then that translation gets accepted.

  37. @eltonfc It is interesting, I have never really thought of it. Swedish native speaker, and the infinite and imperative forms are (mostly) identical also in Swedish, so I haven't made the distinction.

But thinking of it, it's imperative, as I am commanding the machine to do something for me: "Open the (expletive) file".

As a software translator, I haven't thought of it either, but the imperative form comes naturally (and I follow the lead from other software as far as possible).

The biggest hurdle translating is when there are adjectives, as these are inflected by gender, so a menu item like "New" can have several forms in Swedish, and is often translated as "Create", which cannot.

  42. I'm amazed at how ignorant US software companies can be when it comes to international time and date formats. Ever noticed that #Zoom in their German DE #localisation still uses US date and time format, i.e. that weird month before day and only 12 hours - *but simply doesn't print am/pm*?

It's not like there's literal standard library stuff that does this (okay, it's often borked, but come-on, you bother shoving AI in everyone's face, start with i18n and l10n before LLM!)
