  3. I realize that I might have misused the "semantic versioning" with the last release of Back In Time.
Compared to 1.5.6, there are so many breaking changes in 1.6.0, that it better should have been 2.0.0.

    What do you think?

  14. @nixCraft Oh god, this happened to me, on my own PC, in the middle of the night while I was up for a 3AM maintenance call into the datacenter. Alarm clock wakes me up, I turn on the monitor, see this. Snap picture, reboot, no boot disk. Dead. Luckily I took my work laptop home and used that. After maintenance, I put a fresh disk in, reinstalled Ubuntu, set it up enough to install #backintime, point it at my fileserver, and completely restored my workstation. Only lost a day of emails.

  16. Thinking about using either BackInTime or bup with Kup for local backups to have stuff in multiple formats. BackInTime is on the AUR, and bup's readme mentions that it's not as well-tested as tar and stuff.

  18. Yesterday I got a chance to check out "Mixtape," and I really liked it.

I think it's the setting and the artwork that takes you back to your own youth (if you're as old as I am).

I only played it for half an hour, but I really enjoyed it.

  19. Back-In-Time (rsync) - heute ist Version 1.6 erschienen.
Größere Neuerung: Umstieg der Verschlüsselungsart. Lange Jahre EnfCS es - jetzt gocryptfs (alte verschlüsselte Archive wohl weiterhin lesbar).

    Oberfläche unterstützt nun Qt6.

    Stabilität soll verbessert sein.

    Wie machst du es? 😊

  22. Me and my first phone.
    Around 45 years ago.

This photo has been on my grandma's living room cabinet for as long as I can remember. She passed away less than three years ago, and to keep her memory alive, my wife suggested we keep it in our living room.

A blast from the past looking towards the future.

  23. @rasterweb Well the problem is there is nothing in #Linux exactly like Apple's Time Machine. In particular, nothing includes the "Migration Assistant" functionality that is based on having a current Time Machine backup. In terms of GUI, the closest thing I ever came across was a program called #Cronopete, but I never actually used it.

Many people, myself included, use two programs. I use #Timeshift to back up the system and the root directory (the latter because it changes very infrequently) and I set it to make a backup once or twice a week. Then, to back up my user directory, I use #BackInTime and have it set to make a backup every four hours. Of course these are incremental backups, in both cases my understanding is that (much like Time Machine) only data that has been added or changed since the previous backup is actually saved to the backup drive.

Timeshift has one glaring fault in that you can tell it how often to backup, but not WHEN to do the backups. There is a workaround (twosortoftechguys.wordpress.co) but why they don't give you this ability in the Timeshift GUI is beyond me.

I have also never understood why it is recommended to run both programs to back up different parts of the system, or why no one has developed one program that does it all. I guess technically you can set Timeshift to back up everything but nobody seems to recommend that, and I don't really understand why. I THINK both Timeshift and BackInTime use rsync "under the hood". And there are several other #backup programs, those are just the two I have seen recommended most often for Linux users.
