I’m thinking that rsync is not sufficient for important large data backups. Even if I’m rsyncing the data away to the Hetzner Storage Box.
I need something more advanced with deduplication and so on. I tried #borgbackup in the past, and that thing was absolutely not user-friendly. It was rather user-hostile.
Now, #SelfHosted community has #Duplicati and #Duplicacy? Does someone use one? Any recommendations?

Today is the first day I ever had to recover something from a backup. Luckily I have a good backup strategy so it was as easy as mounting my backup drive and copying the files back.

Keep backups, save yourself a lot of trouble and money! And make sure they work!

Just in, UPS & PDU

This pic dates from the heavy rack remodeling, everything had to go out before it could fit altogether, nightly (finally)

Both the UPS and PDU are network enabled, so I’m looking to completing them Grafana dashboards with Nut data, electricity cost and more

And on top, soon, the rack will be fully mobile (at least from the leaving room to the kitchen)

Back in December last year, I suffered a massive incident on the home infra, which lead to all of the media’s of the Synapse server (decentralised one-place messaging service) to be lost

Well, surprise surprise, the other day I found that my backup routine had done what it was supposed to

Hourly cumulative backups, daily full backups, weekly backups retention for 3 months, and monthly backups retention for 1 year

So I restored the latest before-outage backup, diffed both the production and restored volume, and transferred over the difference

The immense sensation of relief realising everything worked as expected, and that all the memories with the SO are still there

One more tale on how important backups are !

Restic + systemd user services = set-and-forget backups. The trick: a oneshot service for the backup + a timer, with ExecStartPre to verify the repo is reachable and ExecStartPost for pruning.
